A Survey Of Limited Nondeterminism In Computational Complexity Theory, Matthew Asher Levy Jan 2003

A Survey Of Limited Nondeterminism In Computational Complexity Theory, Matthew Asher Levy

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Nondeterminism is typically used as an inherent part of the computational models used incomputational complexity. However, much work has been done looking at nondeterminism asa separate resource added to deterministic machines. This survey examines several differentapproaches to limiting the amount of nondeterminism, including Kintala and Fischer's βhierarchy, and Cai and Chen's guess-and-check model.

Revising Horn Formulas, Jignesh Umesh Doshi Jan 2003

Revising Horn Formulas, Jignesh Umesh Doshi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Boolean formulas can be used to model real-world facts. In some situation we may havea Boolean formula that closely approximates a real-world fact, but we need to fine-tune itso that it models the real-world fact exactly. This is a problem of theory revision where thetheory is in the form of a Boolean formula. An algorithm is presented for revising a class ofBoolean formulas that are expressible as conjunctions of Horn clauses. Each of the clausesin the formulas considered here has a unique unnegated variable that does not appear inany other clauses, and is not `F'. The revision algorithm uses equivalence …

Elk Calf Survival, Mortality, And Neonatal Habitat Use In Eastern Kentucky, Nathan W. Seward Jan 2003

Elk Calf Survival, Mortality, And Neonatal Habitat Use In Eastern Kentucky, Nathan W. Seward

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

I estimated survival, cause-specific mortality, and neonatal habitat use of elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) calves in eastern Kentucky. I also measured habitat characteristics of elk parturition sites and annual calf production . Radio-collared females were fitted with vaginal implant transmitters and monitored for parturition behavior to locate, capture, and radio-collar calves during the springs of 2001 and 2002. Thirty-seven adult females with implant transmitters were translocated from Logan, Utah, to Addington Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in eastern Kentucky. Additional females from previous releases during 1997 and 1998 were monitored for parturition behavior. Mean calf production for all females monitored (n=77) …

Classification Of Paleochannels And Their Relationship To Synsedimentary Faulting Within The Lower Elkhon Coal Zone, Pikeville Formation, Breathitt Group, Southeastern Kentucky, Michael Garry Shultz Jan 2003

Classification Of Paleochannels And Their Relationship To Synsedimentary Faulting Within The Lower Elkhon Coal Zone, Pikeville Formation, Breathitt Group, Southeastern Kentucky, Michael Garry Shultz

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Paleochannels are a major cause of roof failure in underground coal mines in southeastern Kentucky. Models that predict the location and geometry of paleochannels are essential to assist in mine planning and development. Data from approximately 506 coal exploration drill holes were subjected to second-order trend-surface analysis to identify stacking or offsetting relationships between sandstone bodies in adjacent stratigraphic intervals. The stacking of sandstone bodies within adjacent intervals suggests the presence of synsedimentary faulting. This model suggests that continued movement along the faults created topographic lows attracted paleodrainages and accommodated thick accumulations of sandstone in approximately the same areas through …

Identification Of Natural Attenuation Of Trichloroethene And Technetium-99 Along Little Bayou Creek, Mccracken County, Kentucky, Abhijit Mukherjee Jan 2003

Identification Of Natural Attenuation Of Trichloroethene And Technetium-99 Along Little Bayou Creek, Mccracken County, Kentucky, Abhijit Mukherjee

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Natural attenuation of trichloroethene (TCE) and technetium (99Tc) was studied for five consecutive seasons (from January 2002 to January 2003) in Little Bayou Creek. The stream receives ground water discharge from an aquifer contaminated by past waste disposal activities at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), a uranium enrichment facility near Paducah, Kentucky. Results from stream gaging, contaminant monitoring, tracer tests (with bromide, nitrate, rhodamine WT and propane) and simulation modeling indicate the TCE is naturally attenuated by volatilization and dilution, with volatilization rates related to the ambient temperature and surface discharge rate. The only apparent mechanism of 99Tc attenuation …

Linear And Nonlinear Modeling Of Asperity Scale Frictional Melting In Brittle Fault Zones, Ravi V. S. Kanda Jan 2003

Linear And Nonlinear Modeling Of Asperity Scale Frictional Melting In Brittle Fault Zones, Ravi V. S. Kanda

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Study of pseudotachylytes (PT) (frictional melts) can provide information on the physical and chemical conditions at the earthquake source. This study examines the influence of asperityscale fault dynamics on asperity temperature distribution, and therefore, the potential for frictional melting to occur. Frictional melting occurs adiabatically, and is initiated between opposing asperity tips during fault slip. Our model considers 2-D heat conduction in elastic, isotropic, hemispherical asperities, with temperature dependent thermal properties. The only heat source is a point heat flux pulse at the asperity tip. The non-linear problem was solved using the -form of Newton-Kantorovich procedure coupled with the -form …

Protective helmets used by fire-fighters must be designed to minimize the amount of heat transferred to the users head while providing durability, comfort, and affordable costs. This thesis highlights the evaluation of new helmet technology specifically tailored to high radiant heat environments to advance the state-of-the-art in head protection for this application. The research focused on the assessment of the outer shells of helmets and the properties of the surfaces. The development included the evaluation of radiation heat transfer, in a laboratory environment, to various helmet shell surface constructions. Industry standards were considered, and critiqued. Experiments were designed to isolate …

Design Of A Lorentz, Slotless Self-Bearing Motor For Space Applications, Barrett Alan Steele Jan 2003

Design Of A Lorentz, Slotless Self-Bearing Motor For Space Applications, Barrett Alan Steele

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The harsh conditions of space, the stringent requirements for orbiting devices, and the increasing precision pointing requirements of many space applications demand an actuator that can provide necessary force while using less space and power than its predecessors. Ideally, this actuator would be able to isolate vibrations and never fail due to mechanical wear, while pointing with unprecedented accuracy. This actuator has many space applications from satellite optical communications and satellite appendage positioning to orbiting telescopes. This thesis presents the method of design of such an actuator a self-bearing motor. The actuator uses Lorentz forces to generate both torque and …

Pattern Evaluation For In-Plane Displacement Measurement Of Thin Films, Phanikrishna Thota Jan 2003

Pattern Evaluation For In-Plane Displacement Measurement Of Thin Films, Phanikrishna Thota

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The term Gossamer is used to describe ultra-lightweight spacecraft structures that solve the aerospace challenge of obtaining maximum performance while reducing the launch costs of the spacecraft. Gossamer structures are extremely compliant, which complicates control design and ground testing in full scale. One approach is to design and construct smaller test articles and verify their computational models experimentally, so that similar computational models can be used to predict the dynamic performance of full-scale structures. Though measurement of both in-plane and out-of-plane displacements is required to characterize the dynamic response of the surface of these structures, this thesis lays the groundwork …

Characterization Of An Electron Gun Controlled Multiple Spatial Region Piezoelectric Thin Film, Benjamin Tyler Macke Jan 2003

Characterization Of An Electron Gun Controlled Multiple Spatial Region Piezoelectric Thin Film, Benjamin Tyler Macke

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Piezoelectric bimorph thin films may hold solutions for many future applications, such as lightweight deployable mirrors and inflatable struts. Non-contact actuation by an electron gun has shown promise in preventing issues that arise from attaching many wire leads to a thin film surface. This study investigates piezoelectric bimorph thin film response to electron gun actuation when covered with multiple spatial regions of control. Desired parameter ranges are found that will lead to predictable control under certain circumstances. Under such circumstances, film response is influenced almost solely by the primary electrons incident on the film, and secondary electrons have negligible effect. …

Analysis And Application Of Capacitive Displacement Sensors To Curved Surfaces, Philip T. Smith Jr. Jan 2003

Analysis And Application Of Capacitive Displacement Sensors To Curved Surfaces, Philip T. Smith Jr.

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Capacitive displacement sensors have many applications where non-contact, high precision measurement of a surface is required. Because of their non-contact nature they can easily measure conductive surfaces that are flexible or otherwise unable to be measured using a contact probe. Since the output of the capacitance gage is electrical, data points can be collected quickly and averaged to improve statistics. It is often necessary for capacitive displacement sensors to gage the distance from a curved (non-flat) surface. Although displacements can easily be detected, the calibration of this output can vary considerably from the flat case. Since a capacitance gage is …

Measurements In A Rotating Serpentine Duct With Multiple Rib Arrangements, Rahul Bharadwajh Jan 2003

Measurements In A Rotating Serpentine Duct With Multiple Rib Arrangements, Rahul Bharadwajh

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The effect of rotation on flow in a gas turbine blade cooling duct model is investigated experimentally. The present work consists of velocity measurements at different locations in a test section with a 180° bend with ribs on one wall. Three geometric rib parameters are considered; rib-rib spacing, rib orientation angle and rib blockage ratio. PIV is used for flow visualization and analysis. Along with the clean duct measurements, ribs with blockage ratios, b/h, of 0.25 and 0.125 were considered. The b/h = 0.25 cases have been comprehensively analyzed while the b/h = 0.125 cases have been studied at …

Study Of The "Poor Man's Navier-Stokes" Equation Turbulence Model, Stewart Andrew Bible Jan 2003

Study Of The "Poor Man's Navier-Stokes" Equation Turbulence Model, Stewart Andrew Bible

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The work presented here is part of an ongoing effort to develop a highly accurate and numerically efficient turbulence simulation technique. The paper consists of four main parts, viz., the general discussion of the procedure known as Additive Turbulent Decomposition, the derivation of the "synthetic velocity" subgrid-scale model of the high wavenumber turbulent fluctuations necessary for its implementation, the numerical investigation of this model and a priori tests of said models physical validity. Through these investigations we have demonstrated that this procedure, coupled with the use of the "Poor Mans Navier-Stokes" equation subgrid-scale model, has the potential to be …

Persistent Currents In Mesoscopic Loops And Networks, Igor O. Kulik Jan 2003

Persistent Currents In Mesoscopic Loops And Networks, Igor O. Kulik

Turkish Journal of Physics

The paper describes persistent (also termed ``permanent", or ``non-decaying") currents in mesoscopic metallic and macromolecular rings, cylinders and networks. The current arises as a response of system to Aharonov-Bohm flux threading the conducting loop and does not require external voltage to support the current. Magnitude of the current is periodic function of magnetic flux with a period of normal-metal flux quantum \Phi_0 = hc/e. Spontaneous persistent currents arise in regular macromolecular structure without the Aharonov-Bohm flux provided the azimuthal periodicity of the ring is insured by strong coupling to periodic background (a ``substrate"), otherwise the system will undergo the Peierls …

Mean Multiplicity Of Quark And Gluon Jets As A Function Of Opening Angle In E^{+}E^{-} \Rightarrow B\Overline{B} G Events, Ayda Beddall Jan 2003

Mean Multiplicity Of Quark And Gluon Jets As A Function Of Opening Angle In E^{+}E^{-} \Rightarrow B\Overline{B} G Events, Ayda Beddall

Turkish Journal of Physics

A comparison of the properties of quark and gluon jets has been madeby Monte Carlo simulation of the reaction Z \rightarrow b \overline{b} g. The jet energy is held fixed for every 5 GeV between 15--30 GeV energies and the mean multiplicity of b-quark and gluon jets are obtained as function of the angle between them. It is seen that the jet properties not only depend on the jet energies but also on the angle between the jets.

Are These Queer Times? Gay Male Representation On The American Stage In The 1920'S And 1990'S, James Russell Couch Jan 2003

Are These Queer Times? Gay Male Representation On The American Stage In The 1920'S And 1990'S, James Russell Couch

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Utilizing a model based on Queer theory and comprising four relational paradigms, this thesis examines specific dramas of Mae West and Terrence McNally in an effort to understand the multiple relationships between the text, the society and the culture in the production of a gay male identity and its representation on the American stage in the 1920s and the 1990s. Each relational paradigm is the product of a different twentieth century scholar and can be viewed as an individual lens through which one aspect of a drama or culture can be magnified, illuminated or distorted. These paradigms are: culture and …

States And Internet Enforcement, Joel R. Reidenberg Jan 2003

States And Internet Enforcement, Joel R. Reidenberg

Faculty Scholarship

This essay addresses the enforcement of decisions through internet instruments. The starting point is a brief justification of internet enforcement as the obligation of democratic states. Next, the essay argues that the movement to re-engineer the internet infrastructure by public and private actions also facilitates state enforcement of legal and policy decisions. The essay maintains that states will increasingly try to use network intermediaries such as payment systems and Internet Service Providers as enforcement instruments. Finally, and most importantly, the essay focuses on ways that states may harness the power of technological instruments such as worms, filters and packet interceptors …

Sustaining Progressivity In The Budget Process: A Commentary On Gale & (And) Orszag's An Economic Assessment Of Tax Policy In The Bush Administration, 2001-2004 The State Of Federal Income Taxation Symposium: Rates, Progressivity, And Budget Processes, Linda Sugin Jan 2003

Sustaining Progressivity In The Budget Process: A Commentary On Gale & (And) Orszag's An Economic Assessment Of Tax Policy In The Bush Administration, 2001-2004 The State Of Federal Income Taxation Symposium: Rates, Progressivity, And Budget Processes, Linda Sugin

Faculty Scholarship

This Commentary proposes the adoption of pay-go procedural rules for tax lawmaking that favor tax cuts that decrease income inequality, in response to biases in distributional tables and distortions in the political process. It suggests that the failure to use present value analysis in the budget process has had unfortunate, unintended consequences, in particular, a congressional preference for a prepaid-type consumption tax. This Commentary argues that efforts to index the Alternative Minimum Tax (the "AMT") should not deflect attention from the AMT's most fundamental distributional problem-its failure to treat dividends and capital gains as preference items. It suggests that there …
