On-Site Wastewater Treatment System, Phil Kappen, Russell Dickerson
On-Site Wastewater Treatment System, Phil Kappen, Russell Dickerson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Most rural homes in South Dakota are served by an on-site, wastewater treatment system or septic system, but many rural residents do not have the basic information they need to properly operate and maintain their septic systems. There is often a sense of "out of sight, out of mind" when dealing with an on-site system. The purpose of this manual to provide the homeowner with that information. If an on-site system is to fulfill its intended function and properly treat wastewater, three items are necessary. The first two items, proper system design and installation, are the responsibility of the system …

Thermal Analysis Of Welding On Aluminum Plates, Rong-Hua Yeh, Shih-Pin Liaw, Hong-Bin Yu
Thermal Analysis Of Welding On Aluminum Plates, Rong-Hua Yeh, Shih-Pin Liaw, Hong-Bin Yu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study investigated the temperature distribution of aluminum plates welded by gas tungsten arc. The heat of fusion, the size and distribution of heat source, the travel speed, the heat conduction in the welding direction and the surface heat loss during welding were considered. A numerical scheme was developed to solve the threedimensional problem. With the help of a mathematical model, the effect of welding parameters such as heat input of the weld, preheating of the workpiece and moving velocity of heat source on weld penetration in moderately thick plates were discussed. The steady-state temperature profiles of the welded plate …
A Novel Approach To Determine The Astronomical Vessel Position, Chih-Li Chen, Tien-Pen Hsu, Jiang-Ren Chang
A Novel Approach To Determine The Astronomical Vessel Position, Chih-Li Chen, Tien-Pen Hsu, Jiang-Ren Chang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, a novel approach based on the trigonometric equation solving technique is developed to solve the classical problem of celestial navigation. It is shown that this approach, namely, the simultaneous equal-altitude equations method (SEEM), can directly calculate the astronomical vessel position (AVP) without an additional graphical procedure. It is also found that the SEEM is not only simpler than the matrix method but is also more straightforward as compared with the spherical triangle method. In addition, aimed at the drawbacks of the intercept method, an improved approach with the new computation procedure is presented to plot the celestial …

Segregating Transgenic Grains: Results Of A Survey Among Country Elevators In South Dakota, Bashir Qasmi, Clayton J. Wilhelm, Evert Van Der Sluis
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
In 2002, cash receipts from crop production in South Dakota totaled $1.76 billion, accounting for 38 % of all receipts of agricultural producers in the state (South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, 2003). The three most important crops grown in South Dakota are soybeans, corn, and wheat. In 2001, South Dakota ranked 8th in the production of corn and soybean and 9th in wheat production among the nation's crop producing states (South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, 2003). These three crops accounted for 86 % of all cash receipts from marketing crops in the state. Due to the state's reliance on grain …
Cost Comparison Of Straddle Carrier Direct And Relay Systems In Container Terminals, Wen-Chih Huang, Chin-Yuan Chu
Cost Comparison Of Straddle Carrier Direct And Relay Systems In Container Terminals, Wen-Chih Huang, Chin-Yuan Chu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The main characteristics of straddle carrier direct system and straddle carrier relay system are stated and factors affecting the economics of this two handling systems are also studied. A cost function model is proposed to make the comparison. It includes land cost, equipment cost, transportation cost between quayside and storage yard, annual throughput, handling efficiency, labor cost and their constituent factors. A "handling cost comparison indicator" (RD) is also submitted to determine the preferred system. For RD > 1 scenario, straddle carrier direct system is preferred, and on the contrary, straddle carrier relay system is preferred, if RD < 1.

A Novel Earplug System For Filtering Out Dental Noise, Jiang-Ren Chang, Huan-Kun Cheng, Sheng-Yang Lee, Mingsian R. Bai, Rong-I Lean
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Undergoing dental treatment is usually a very unpleasant experience for people who have toothaches, especially when they are hurting and there exists some intolerable mechanical noise. To reduce the noise and promote the work efficiency of dentists, a new noisefiltering earplug system with optional music was developed to filter out dental machine noise; if necessary, it can also be adopted as a solution to reduce pain and anxiety of patients during treatments. Furthermore, it can also simultaneously serve as a communication tool between the patient and dentist. In this study, various kinds of noises were initially collected through an off-line …

Experimenting With Tcpa/Tcg Hardware, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bear, John Marchesini, Sean Smith, Omen Wild, Rich Macdonald
Computer Science Technical Reports
Over the last few years, our group has been working on applications of secure coprocessors---but has been frustrated by the limited computational environment and high expense of such devices. Over the last few years, the TCPA (now TCG) has produced a specification for a trusted platform module (TPM)---a small hardware addition intended to improve the overall security of a larger machine (and tied up with a still-murky vision of Windows-based trusted computing). Some commodity desktops now come up with these TPMs. Consequently, we began an experiment to see if (in the absence of a Non-Disclosure Agreement) we could use this …

Accumulation Of Electron Spin Polarization At Semiconductor Interfaces, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr
Accumulation Of Electron Spin Polarization At Semiconductor Interfaces, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr
Faculty Publications
In this Brief Report we study theoretically the propagation of electron spin polarization through an interface separating two n-type semiconductor regions within the two-component drift-diffusion model in an applied electric field. It is assumed that inhomogeneous spin polarization is created locally by a continuous source of spin polarization and is driven through the boundary by the electric field. The spin polarization distribution is calculated analytically. We find that for specific values of parameters describing the system, the electron spin polarization is accumulated near the interface. A simple analytical expression for the amplitude of spin accumulation as a function of the …

Industry In The Southern Thames Street Neighborhood Of Newport, Rhode Island, 1820 -1920, Daniel P. Titus
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
In the study of Industry in the Southern Thames Street Neighborhood of Newport, Rhode Island from 1820 -1920 we by necessity must touch, even if ever so slightly, on the history of industry in Newport, not just the District, both before and after that time period. We must try to understand what life was like for the residents of the District and the city. We must try to understand what was happening in the area, the city, and in a larger sense, the region to get an understanding of the social and economic forces at play on their everyday lives. …

Computer-Aided Optimal Design Of A Single-Chamber Muffler With Side Inlet/Outlet Under Space Constraints, Long-Jyi Yeh, Ying-Chun Chang, Min-Chie Chiu, Gaung-Jer Lay
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Whilst the muffler dimension is often limited inside a building or machine room, the consideration of maximal sound transmission loss (STL) under space constraints becomes important and essential to the field of acoustics. In this paper, the optimal design of a singlechamber muffler with side inlet/outlet is comprehensively presented. Both the graphic analysis and the computer-aided numerical assessments are also fully described in this study. With the computer graphic analysis on sensitivity, one set of design data is derived primarily, and the numerical searching algorithm of iteration technique and the initial design data are then carried out. These results are …
Influence Of C3S Content Of Cement On Concrete Sulfate Durability, Natalya G. Shanahan
Influence Of C3S Content Of Cement On Concrete Sulfate Durability, Natalya G. Shanahan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The influence of tricalcium silicate content of cement on concrete durability has long been a topic of discussion in the literature. The objective of this investigation was to determine whether increasing tricalcium silicate content of cement has a negative effect on concrete sulfate durability. Several mill certificates were reviewed to select cements with similar tricalcium aluminate content and variable tricalcium silicate contents. Cements selected for this study were randomly labeled as cements C, D, D2, E, and P.
The following properties were assessed for the as-received cements: Blaine fineness, particle size distribution, chemical oxide content, and mineralogical content. Three different …
A Normalization Scheme Of Bidirectional Reflectances And Normalized Vegetation Indices For Short-Term Multi-Angular Spot Satellite Images, Chien-Hui Liu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Though the view angle range of SPOT HRV is smaller as compared to those of NOAA AVHRR, EOS MODIS/MISR and ADEOS POLDER, numerous researchers had showed significant bi-directional effect of ground reflectance for decades. Currently, there's no existing normalization method of bidirectional reflectances for multitemporal SPOT images. In this study, a normalization scheme for multi-angular SPOT data is proposed. This scheme will correct both atmospheric and bidirectional effect for short-term multi-temporal SPOT data. Five SPOT images scanned within twelve days are used. The results show that the variation of trees reflectance to viewing zenith angle is very significant. The proposed …

Book Reviews In The Earth And Atmospheric Sciences Journal Literature, Carolyn Laffoon, Michael Fosmire
Libraries Research Publications
As library budgets continue to lag behind increases in the cost of scholarly information in the geosciences, it becomes increasingly important for librarians to make good choices in collection development. One way to get more information about books to make an informed acquisition decision is through reading reviews, and especially timely reviews. Whereas the major book review indexes only cover geoscience titles sporadically, the authors decided to undertake a full study of the literature in earth and atmospheric sciences to find out which journals contain book reviews, and how old the books are that are reviewed. This study is modeled …

As higher education transforms itself from a lecture-dominated enterprise to one that encourages active engagement by the students with the curriculum, librarians have a new avenue for inserting themselves into the educational mission of the university. At Purdue University, the libraries have been successful integrating problem-based learning activities into curricula in several departments. One of the most successful ventures at Purdue has been in the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, where, in addition to our regular instructional presence, we have created ‘information labs’ in two courses so far, including the first year survey course taken by all EAS majors. The information …

Are Stock Prices Related To New York's Climatic Conditions?, Matthew M. Cullen
Honors Theses
The past five years has shown tremendous growth in a new wave and style of investing strategy. This new style, known as behavioral investing, attempts to analyze financial markets through the eye of a social scientist rather than a financial professional. Its followers try to see market movements as affected not necessarily by the business or economy but by the cognition and mood of buyers and seller. This paper analyzes the effect of climatic conditions on mood and the effect that has on market movements and volume. For the most part, it was found that there is no significant relationship …

Investigation Of Nanodispersion In Polystyrene-Montmorillonite Nanocomposites By Solid State Nmr, Serge Bourbigot, David L. Vanderhart, Jeffery W. Gilman Sr., Walid Awad, Rick D. Davis, Alexander B. Morgan, Charles A. Wilkie
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Nanocomposites result from combinations of materials with vastly different properties in the nanometer scale. These materials exhibit many unique properties such as improved thermal stability, reduced flammability, and improved mechanical properties. Many of the properties associated with polymer–clay nanocomposites are a function of the extent of exfoliation of the individual clay sheets or the quality of the nanodispersion. This work demonstrates that solid-state NMR can be used to characterize, quantitatively, the nanodispersion of variously modified montmorillonite (MMT) clays in polystyrene (PS) matrices. The direct influence of the paramagnetic Fe3, embedded in the aluminosilicate layers of MMT, on polymer protons within …
