A Comparison Of The Epithelium To Mesenchyme Transformation Process In Cultured Embryonic Chick Neural Crest Cells And Human Metastatic Cervical Cancer Cells, Molly Decker
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Embryonic neural crest cells (NCCs) and metastasizing cancer cells both undergo an epithelium to mesenchyme transformation (EMT) during which they disengage from neighboring cells and basement membrane and actively migrate to new locations. NCCs, small groups of cells that emerge from the neural tube, move directionally through adjacent tissues to reach specific destinations where they differentiate into a diverse array of specific cells and tissues. Caski cells are an established line of metastatic cervical cancer cells that contain HPV. We compared NCCs to Caski cells during EMT with respect to the expression of key proteins related to cell migration-integrin, paxillin, …

Martel's Routes In Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, 1912, Trevor R. Shaw
Martel's Routes In Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, 1912, Trevor R. Shaw
International Journal of Speleology
Martel’s own copy of the Hovey 1912 guidebook to Mammoth Cave has his routes marked faintly in pencil on the printed cave plans. These plans are reproduced here, with his routes indicated on them. He generally followed the four standard tourist routes which now included Kaemper’s 1908 discoveries to Violet City, but instead of visiting the Maelstrom he went to Hovey’s Cathedral and Gerta’s Grotto.
Littoral Dripstone And Flowstone--Non-Spelean Carbonate Secondary Deposits, Danko Taborosi, Kevin Stafford
Littoral Dripstone And Flowstone--Non-Spelean Carbonate Secondary Deposits, Danko Taborosi, Kevin Stafford
International Journal of Speleology
Speleothem-like dripstone and flowstone deposits can form in the non-spelean environments of marine notches on tropical carbonate coastlines. Hereby termed “littoral dripstone” and “littoral flowstone” to distinguish them from genuine cave deposits, they reflect the basic speleothem types: draperies, stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. Nevertheless, these formations lack the luster and crystallinity of cave analogues, and are not nearly as well-developed, dense, and massive. They are composed of layered microcrystalline aragonite and calcite, are generally highly porous, and invariably overlie dissolutional and bioerosional karren. Because true speleothems, often found in the remnants of solution voids breached by coastal erosion, are also …

A Comparison Of Learning Styles Among Seven Health Professions: Implications For Optometric Education, Patrick C. Hardigan, Stanley R. Cohen
A Comparison Of Learning Styles Among Seven Health Professions: Implications For Optometric Education, Patrick C. Hardigan, Stanley R. Cohen
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Educational research and development efforts are most often directed at the improvement of teaching while neglecting students’ learning styles. Besides being marginally effective, an exclusive focus on improving teaching methods may lead to reinforcement of inappropriate and nontransferable learning strategies. As such, this study is being undertaken to determine if differences in personality style exist among health profession students. This retrospective-descriptive study tested the null hypothesis “there is no difference in personality traits between osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, dental medicine, optometry and occupational therapy students.” Differences as well as similarities were discovered across all seven professions. Implications …

Report On The Third Acm/Ieee Joint Conference On Digital Libraries (Jcdl), Michael L. Nelson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The Third ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL 2003) was held on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas, May 27 - 31. Regarding the merging of the ACM and IEEE conference series, in the JCDL 2002 conference report published last year in D-Lib Magazine Edie Rasmussen noted, "Perhaps by next year...no one will remember that it wasn't always so" [1]. Judging by the number of participants I met who did not know that the ACM and IEEE used to hold separate digital library conferences, Rasmussen's prediction has come to pass.

Breaking The Stereotypes: Influences And Characteristics Of Academically Talented Women, Joy Leigh Daggs
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
I was in fifth grade when I heard the word "gifted" for the first time. I had little idea what it meant, but once I was identified that way, my life as a student began to change. I was suddenly expected to perform at my highest level with very little room for error. I learned about the expectations of my performance from my peers, teachers, and parents. They sent me very clear messages about how I was to perform as an academically talented woman. My experience has shaped my research interest for this thesis. In this thesis, I will explore …
Not For The Faint Of Heart: The Social Construction Of Oregon Charter Schools, Anthony Dean Valley
Not For The Faint Of Heart: The Social Construction Of Oregon Charter Schools, Anthony Dean Valley
Dissertations and Theses
Over the past two decades, pressure to both reform public education and provide educational choices for families has led to the creation of charter schools. Charter schools are based on the premise of operational autonomy in exchange for accountability for agreed upon results. Their appeal is widespread, with over 2,000 charter schools opening in the United States since 1990.
The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study is to describe the process of initiating a charter school. Eight key informants representing five Oregon charter schools were included in the study. These key informants were directly involved in the formation of their …

Under The Plastic: A Quantitative Look At Dvd Video Encoding And Its Impact On Video Modeling, Wu-Chi Feng, Jin Choi, Wu-Chang Feng, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper, we examine the DVD encoding process and the implications this process has video modeling and network traffic analysis. We have assembled a system that allows us to extract the video data from the DVDs as they were encoded for distribution. Analyzing the resulting video trace data, we describe how DVD encodings have evolved over time. In addition, our findings show that the underlying video content is fundamentally different than those produced by basic consumer video capture boards. We demonstrate how this affects current video modeling proposals and their affect on network traffic characterization. This research is based …

Complex Decapod Burrows And Ecological Relationships In Modern And Pleistocene Intertidal Carbonate Environments, San Salvador Island, Bahamas, H. Allen Curran, Anthony J. Martin
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Burrowing by thalassinidean shrimp in modern tropical, shallow-subtidal to intertidal carbonate environments is widespread and a powerful agent of bioturbation, particularly within sandy substrates. Deep and intense burrowing by callianassids commonly occurs along the intertidal margins of hypersaline lagoons throughout the Bahamas, such as Pigeon Creek on San Salvador Island, where the sediments of extensive sand flats are thoroughly bioturbated by Glypturusacanthochirus. In addition to dominating the deep-tier infauna, G. acanthochirus is a true ecosystem engineer, and its prodigious burrowing activity results in a highly mounded topography. On sand flats, individual sediment cones commonly coalesce with time to form large …

Consensus Software: Robustness And Social Good, Michael N. Huhns
Consensus Software: Robustness And Social Good, Michael N. Huhns
Faculty Publications
In this column I explore some far-reaching issues of software development that lie at the intersection of robust software and sociopolitical systems. These two areas might seem unrelated-and most software developers would likely be horrified to have politics intrude on their programming efforts-but the intersection occurs through these premises: software systems administer and control much of our societal infrastructure; people would appreciate and better accept that control if they had input into the nature of the control and the systems' behavior; designers can make software systems more robust through redundancy, in which different versions of software components might cover for …
Being And Acting Rational, Michael N. Huhns
Being And Acting Rational, Michael N. Huhns
Faculty Publications
Rationality alone is insufficient to specify agent design. Using economic theory, we can program agents to behave in ways that maximize their utility while responding to environmental changes. However, economic models for agents, although general in principle, are typically limited in practice because the value functions that are tractable essentially reduce an agent to acting selfishly. Building a stable social system from a collection of agents motivated by self-serving interests is difficult. Finally, understanding rationality and knowledge requires interdisciplinary results from artificial intelligence, distributed.
Massive Deliberation, William H. Turkett Jr., John R. Rose, Michael N. Huhns
Massive Deliberation, William H. Turkett Jr., John R. Rose, Michael N. Huhns
Faculty Publications
Agents are proliferating on the Web, making it conceivable that their collective reasoning ability might someday be harnessed for robust decision-making. The hope is that massive deliberation power can soon help solve problems that require knowledge, reasoning, and intelligence. Until recently, working individually or in small groups, agents across the Web could barely communicate and could only reason under conditions of severely bounded rationality. Projects such as Agentcities showed that widespread heterogeneous agents could collaborate on specific predefined tasks and provide diverse agent-based services. When the tasks are dynamic, of long duration, and ill defined, however, success requires planning that …

Coca Cola Bottling Of Central South Dakota: Sales Center Warehouse Inventory Database, Kristian C. D. Palmer
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Coca-Cola Bottling of Central South Dakota (CCBCSD), which is comprised of four separate sales centers and warehouses, and is owned by Chesterman Company of Sioux City Iowa, has experienced radical (month to month) discrepancies in inventory tracking and charges over the past 12 to 32 months. To gain an understanding of individual sales center inventory trends involving shipments both into and out of sales centers, as well as sales and damaged/destroyed products, CCBCSD has determined the need for an onsite inventory tracking database. Three of the four sales centers maintain Microsoft Windows 98 personal computers with Microsoft Office 2000 Professional …

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Building Customer Relationships Through CRM Customer Relationship Management (CRM) 1s an important business concept currently being discussed in small, medium, and large enterprises in the world today. The staggering growth of this new Internet market place is making prices transparent. Customers have the opportunity to select from different brands of products and are demanding five-star customer services. This puts greater emphasis on customer satisfaction and retention. CRM is not a product, nor is it a technology. It is a business philosophy that touches upon many independent departments of the organization. CRM is a concept that requires a new customer-centric business …
Decision Support For Software Projects: The Role Of Spc And Simulation Metamodeling, Omar F. El-Gayar
Decision Support For Software Projects: The Role Of Spc And Simulation Metamodeling, Omar F. El-Gayar
Research & Publications
While many researchers have attempted to directly apply statistical process control (SPC) to the software domain, several difficulties in applying SPC to software development, in particular, the inability to compute meaningful control limits for the process. In this research, we propose a framework for applying SPC to software projects. The framework integrates SPC concepts and simulation metamodeling to create meaningful control limits on process and project inputs. The framework is demonstrated using a case study.
Three-Dimensional Numerical Simulation And Design Of Tensioned Roof Bolting For Underground Coal Mines., Yunqing Zhang
Three-Dimensional Numerical Simulation And Design Of Tensioned Roof Bolting For Underground Coal Mines., Yunqing Zhang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tensioned bolts work in different mechanisms from the fully grouted resin bolts and are believed to be effective for certain types of roof strata. A 3-D finite element model using ABAQUS has been developed for the tensioned bolting design. In this model, the physical process of the tensioned bolting including entry excavation sequence, roof bolting components, bolt installation procedure and pre-tension is modeled realistically. Bedding planes and in-situ horizontal stresses are also considered in the model. A case study of a well-instrumented intersection of entry/crosscut was used to compare the results from the modeling with field measurements in terms of …
A New Model For The Assessment Of Nonpoint Source Pollution Using Gis And Virtual Intelligence., Seyed Razi Gaskari
A New Model For The Assessment Of Nonpoint Source Pollution Using Gis And Virtual Intelligence., Seyed Razi Gaskari
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Today, nonpoint source (NPS) pollution remains as the leading cause of water quality problems in the United States (USEPA, 1996). The most common NPS pollutants are sediment (i.e. total suspended solids, TSS) and nutrients (i.e. total nitrogen, TN). These wash into water bodies from agricultural land, construction sites, and other areas of disturbance. To develop the virtual non-point source assessment system (VNPSAS) model, monitoring gauges were selected for data extraction from West Virginia and also the western part of Virginia. A geographic information system (GIS) was used as a productive environment for data extraction and spatial analysis. The information for …
The Effects Of Science Engineering Mathematics Aerospace Academy (Semaa) Participation On Engagement Rates Of Sixth- And Seventh-Grade Students In Regular Mathematics Classes., Donna R. Carr

Journalism And The Internet: Putting Things Into Context., Lance Aaron Parry
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Internet has provided new tools and new opportunities for journalists to gather and report the news, new outlets and new forms for those news reports, and new ways for readers and other news consumers to access that information. From its roots in typesetting to silver halide photography to presses and trucks, journalism has evolved digitally into web pages, pixels and cyberspace. The impact of this information is considered. The Internet itself was used for much of the research supporting this paper. The specific case of the so-called Suburban Sniper in the Washington/Maryland/Virginia metro area in October of 2002 is …
The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
The Rescaling Of The Innu., Janice M. Hardin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines the interaction between the Innu of Labrador, an indigenous people in Canada, and the state since the middle twentieth century. The changing spatiality of this interaction can be understood through the analysis of the politics of scale. The scale of Innu social practices has historically been wide-ranging and fluid. Since the 1950s, the state has been increasingly involved in development projects on the lands the Innu have traditionally occupied. The state’s solution to the unwanted presence of the Innu was to settle, and therefore rescale, them in two settlements in the 1960s. The Innu’s struggle to regain …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Harperís Ferry, West Virginia began its existence as a small settlement in the Northern Neck of colonial Virginia. Originally it was a point of departure for westward expansion, but due to its geographical location, the cultural background of the immigrants who settled there, and technological advancements in transportation, communication and manufacturing, it became a model of industrial development in the nineteenth century. Although it possessed all the factors necessary for continued growth, unwise land management practices, due in part to the Civil War, as well as the consequences of war itself, and technological advancements in steam power, led to the …

Fragm: A Blasting Fragmentation Model Of Rocks., Sergey Victorovych Zagreba
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fragmentation is a major concern of any blasting operation. Information on the degree and size distribution of fragments within a blasted rock mass is essential for efficient rock loading and crushing operations. Detailed literature review shows that majority of the previous researchers estimated blast fragmentation by considering four basic variables, i.e. rock properties, explosive properties, drilling pattern and bench geometry. However, when considering the effect of burden on rock fragmentation, simplified assumptions were made and its variability along the bench height was often ignored. In reality, because of the non-uniform burden along the bench height, the actual powder factor in …
