Panel Remarks On Liability: Liability For Farming?, Rachel G. Lattimore

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Good afternoon. To begin, I’d like to thank Ed Wallis and the Richmond Journal of Law & Tech- nology for inviting me to speak on such a distinguished panel. And I’d like to tell you one thing about myself that is not in my fancy lawyer biography. I grew up on a small family farm down in North Caro- lina, so I learned from an early age about the different types of genetic manipulations that go on a farm, from breeding cattle to grafting apple trees, which if you’re fourteen years old, consists of spending your entire Spring Break taking …

Online Instruction An Alternative Delivery System For Higher Education, Michael Wronkovich Jan 2003

Online Instruction An Alternative Delivery System For Higher Education, Michael Wronkovich

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In an increasingly technological society, delivery systems for professional development and higher education have greatly expanded. Video conferencing and web-based alternatives provide opportunities to extend the college campus far beyond the boundaries traditionally considered feasible. Adult learners have found the convenience of web-based instruction fits their already complicated lifestyle. And for the university, web-based learning is cost effective. The two major questions for this paper are: (1) How does an institution begin web-based instruction? (2) How does it maintain quality for the students who are learning over long distances?

Turkish Journal of Biology

Adventitious shoots were obtained from the diploid Diyarbakır watermelon cultivar "Sürme" by culturing cotyledons on shoot regeneration medium for 3 weeks. The effects of two cytokinins, benzyl amino purine (BA) and kinetine (Kin), on shoot organogenesis were examined. The number of shoots per explant were approximately more than 50% higher when 0.5 mg/l BA was used compared to the most effective kinetin concentration (1 mg/l). Plants were obtained by transferring 1 to 2 cm shoots to MS medium supplemented with 1-4 mg/l naphthalene acetic acid. Most of the regenerated plants (more than 50%) were successfully transplanted to the field. This …

A Procedural Model For Integrating Physical And Cyberspaces In Architecture, Peter Anders Jan 2003

A Procedural Model For Integrating Physical And Cyberspaces In Architecture, Peter Anders

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This dissertation articiilates opportunities offered by architectural computation, in particular the digital simulation of space known as virtual reality (VR) and its networked, social variant cyberspace. The thesis will argue that VR/cyberspace has exacerbated differences between architecture's materialist and idealist practices, widening the gap that separates them. In an effort to bridge this gap it presents a procedural model for how VR and cyberspace may be integrated within the practice and product of architecture. The dissertation presents important developments in architectural computation that disclose concepts and values that contrast with orthodox practice. Virtual reality and cyberspace, the foci of this …

Fatigue Properties Of Metal Inert Gas And Friction Stir Welded Aluminium Alloy 5383-H321, Gareth Richard Bradley Jan 2003

Fatigue Properties Of Metal Inert Gas And Friction Stir Welded Aluminium Alloy 5383-H321, Gareth Richard Bradley

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The following dissertation details the development of a simple defect-tolerant based model for determining the fatigue properties of a 5383-H321 aluminium alloy and metal inert gas and friction stir welded butt joints in the same alloy. The model considers the fatigue life to consist of three regimes, crack initiation and short and long crack growth, in contrast to the typical defect-tolerant approaches which only consider the long crack growth period. Crack initiation was considered to consist of an initial short crack, present prior to fatigue loading, identical in length to the crack initiator. The short crack growth rate was considered …

Principles Of Metadesign : Processes And Levels Of Co-Creation In The New Design Space, Elisa Giaccardi Jan 2003

Principles Of Metadesign : Processes And Levels Of Co-Creation In The New Design Space, Elisa Giaccardi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In the tight of the material and cultural conditions of the present world and within the context of current design theories, this research aims to provide an understanding of Metadesign as emerging design cutture, and to integrate and advance its conceptual framework and principles through a tra nsdisci pli nary dialogue with the aesthetics and practice of Net Art. By rejecting the notion of Metadesign as an established design approach and practice, the creation of an etymological hypothesis based on the meanings of the prefix "-meta" (behind, together, between) becomes possible. Following this historical and cultural path, the research describes …

Journal of Law and Health

This note examines the importance of employee motivation and job satisfaction to increased productivity and stronger client relationships with law firms. In Part I, I discuss how the pressure of the legal profession can affect lawyers' relationships with their staff members. My analysis will center on recent studies on lawyer job satisfaction, the impact of stress on lawyers, and the public's perception of lawyers. In Part II, I discuss the law firm as a "service" organization and the implications of that orientation. In this section, I also emphasize the importance of building and maintaining relationships with clients and how law …

Recent Advances In Solid Hydrogen Storage Systems, B. S. Chao, R. C. Young, V. Myasnikov, Y. Li, F. Gingl, Patrick D. Ferro, V. Sobolev, S. R. Ovshinsky

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Hydrogen energy offers great promise as an energy alternative. Hydrogen technologies can reduce and eliminate the release of carbon dioxide from fossil-fuel combustion, the main cause of global warming. One of the main challenges is hydrogen storage. Storing hydrogen in the solid-state hydride form holds a volumetric advantage over compressed and liquid hydrogen states. Solid hydrogen storage systems also have features of low-pressure operation, compactness, safety, tailorable delivery pressure, excellent absorption /desorption kinetics, modular design for easy scalability, and long cycle life.

In this paper, solid hydrogen storage systems (such as portable power canisters, lightweight fiber wrapped vessels, and aluminum …

Theoretical Analysis For Obtaining Physical Properties Of Composite Electrodes, Parthasarathy M. Gomadam, John W. Weidner, Thomas A. Zawodzinski, Andrew P. Saab Jan 2003

Theoretical Analysis For Obtaining Physical Properties Of Composite Electrodes, Parthasarathy M. Gomadam, John W. Weidner, Thomas A. Zawodzinski, Andrew P. Saab

Faculty Publications

A theoretical analysis is presented that allows in situ measurements of the physical properties of a composite electrode, namely, the electronic conductivity, the ionic conductivity, the exchange-current density, and the double-layer capacitance. Use is made of the current-voltage responses of the composite electrode to dc and ac polarizations under three different experimental configurations. This analysis allows the physical properties to be obtained even when the various resistances in the composite (e.g., ionic, electronic, and charge-transfer) are of comparable values.

Modeling Heat Conduction In Spiral Geometries, Parthasarathy M. Gomadam, Ralph E. White, John W. Weidner Jan 2003

Modeling Heat Conduction In Spiral Geometries, Parthasarathy M. Gomadam, Ralph E. White, John W. Weidner

Faculty Publications

A two-dimensional (2-D) energy balance (the 2D model) is reduced to a one-dimensioanl (1-D) energy balance (the 1D-radial-spiral model) by a coordinate transformation approach. The 1D-radial-spiral model, even though 1-D, captures both radial and spiral heat conductions over a wide range of design parameters. By comparing the temperature predictions of the 1D-radial-spiral model and the 2D model, parameter ranges were identified where spiral conduction was important and where the 1D-radial-spiral model held. The 1D-radial-spiral model provided a sixtyfold savings in computation time over the 2D model. When coupled to electrochemistry, the 2D model took approximately 20 h to simulate a …

Analysis Of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell Performance Using A Three-Phase Homogeneous Model, N. Subramanian, B. S. Haran, P. Ganesan, Ralph E. White, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

In this study a three-phase homogeneous model was developed to simulate the performance of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) cathode. The homogeneous model is based on volume averaging of different variables in the three phases over a small volume element. This approach can be used to model porous electrodes as it represents the real system much better than the conventional agglomerate model. Using the homogeneous model the polarization characteristics of the MCFC cathode was studied under different operating conditions.

A Mathematical Model Of Oxide/Carbon Composite Electrode For Supercapacitors, Hansung Kim, Branko N. Popov Jan 2003

A Mathematical Model Of Oxide/Carbon Composite Electrode For Supercapacitors, Hansung Kim, Branko N. Popov

Faculty Publications

A pseudo two-dimensional model is developed for the general application of supercapacitors consisting of an oxide/carbon composite electrode. The model takes into account the diffusion of protons in the oxide particle by employing the method of superposition. RuO2/carbon system is modeled as a specific example. From the simulation data, it is found that the oxide particle size and proton diffusion coefficient have an enormous effect on the performance at high discharge rate due to the limitation of proton transport into RuO2 particles. With increasing carbon ratio, the porosity of electrode increases, which causes the potential drop in …

A Novel Electrodeposition Process For Plating Zn-Ni-Cd Alloys, Hansung Kim, Branko N. Popov, Ken S. Chen Jan 2003

A Novel Electrodeposition Process For Plating Zn-Ni-Cd Alloys, Hansung Kim, Branko N. Popov, Ken S. Chen

Faculty Publications

Zn-Ni-Cd alloy was electrodeposited from an alkaline electrolytic bath under potentiostatic conditions. Bath analyses using a pH concentration diagram reveal that addition of a complexing agent is essential to maintain the bath stability. Introduction of a low concentration of CdSO4 reduces the anomalous nature of the Zn-Ni deposit. Deposits obtained from the electrolytic bath which contains 60 g/L of ZnSO4·7H2O, 40 g/L of NiSO4·6H2O, 1 g/L of CdSO4, and 80 g/L of (NH4)2SO4 in the presence of additives and ammonium hydroxide at pH 9.3 …

The Safety Of Genetically Modified Foods Produced Through Biotechnology, Robert M. Hollingworth, Leonard F. Bjeldanes, Michael Bolger, Ian Kimber, Barbara Jean Meade, Steve L. Taylor, Kendall B. Wallace

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The Society of Toxicology (SOT) is committed to protecting and enhancing human, animal, and environmental health through the sound application of the fundamental principles of the science of toxicology. It is with this goal in mind that the SOT defines here its current consensus position on the safety of foods produced through biotechnology (genetic engineering). These products are commonly termed genetically modified foods, but this is misleading, since conventional methods of microbial, crop, and animal improvement also produce genetic modifications and these are not addressed here.

The available scientific evidence indicates that the potential adverse health effects arising from biotechnology-derived …

Inactivation Of Feline Calicivirus And Adenovirus Type 40 By Uv Radiation, Jeanette A. Thurston-Enriquez, Charles N. Haas, Joseph Jacangelo, Kelley Riley, Charles P. Gerba

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Little information regarding the effectiveness of UV radiation on the inactivation of caliciviruses and enteric adenoviruses is available. Analysis of human calicivirus resistance to disinfectants is hampered by the lack of animal or cell culture methods that can determine the viruses’ infectivity. The inactivation kinetics of enteric adenovirus type 40 (AD40), coliphage MS-2, and feline calicivirus (FCV), closely related to the human caliciviruses based on nucleic acid organization and capsid architecture, were determined after exposure to low-pressure UV radiation in buffered demand-free (BDF) water at room temperature. In addition, UV disinfection experiments were also carried out in treated groundwater with …

Effect Of The Specificity Of Training Delivery On Skill Acquisition And Transfer, Suzanne Mary Matthews Jan 2003

Effect Of The Specificity Of Training Delivery On Skill Acquisition And Transfer, Suzanne Mary Matthews

Theses : Honours

Past research (e.g., Brewer, 1998) has shown that when people learn to solve simple formulae where elements are repeated over and over again, the greater the degree of repetition, the less transferable the skill. The current study tested one explanation for this observation; that training conditions involving little stimulus variation encourage the development of specific skills with low transferability. These habit-encouraging conditions were compared with a habit-breaking manipulation that involved presentation of unfamiliar stimuli throughout training. Participants were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups, the habit-encouraging and habit-breaking groups. The groups had 22 and 20 participants respectively. Participants were …
