Governing Longevity: Biopolitics And Economic Restructuring In East Asian Aging Societies, Sherlyn She
Governing Longevity: Biopolitics And Economic Restructuring In East Asian Aging Societies, Sherlyn She
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
How do rapidly aging societies govern longevity when demographic change threatens established welfare arrangements? This thesis examines aging governance in China, Japan, and South Korea to show how states simultaneously manage aging as a public-health problem and build it into an economic sector through what I term life capitalism.
Two interpretations of East Asian aging policy are widely circulated: that it is a peripheral case of Western neoliberalism, or a residue of Confucian familism. I reject both: the neoliberal reading captures marketization but misses the state as its active builder, since these states are expanding rather than retreating; the Confucian …
Building Cultural Wealth: A Look Into The 40x40 Council’S Rise East Plan, Camille L. Batiste
Building Cultural Wealth: A Look Into The 40x40 Council’S Rise East Plan, Camille L. Batiste
Master's Theses
This research began as an effort to understand how community-based organizations in neighborhoods that have experienced generational economic disinvestment address the financial and cultural wealth gap in their communities. With the 40x40 Council and its work in East Oakland serving as the case study, it is evident how this organization mobilizes to reverse the impact of cultural erasure and wealth exclusion, helping Black residents not just live, but thrive. With an enriched understanding of how the 40x40 Council frames its approach, implements its vision, and develops its longevity, the Rise East Plan utilizes an alternative wealth-building strategy that centers community, …
On The Application Of Machine Learning Techniques For Quality Assurance In An Automobile Paint Shop, Anis Fatima, Shakeel Ahmed, Muhammad Akif Shan
On The Application Of Machine Learning Techniques For Quality Assurance In An Automobile Paint Shop, Anis Fatima, Shakeel Ahmed, Muhammad Akif Shan
Michigan Tech Publications
The automotive industry depends on high-quality paint coatings for both aesthetic appeal and functional performance. However, surface imperfections such as scratches, paint runs, and orange peel can arise from process and environmental variations. This study employs machine learning (ML) and exploratory data analysis (EDA) to identify key factors that influence surface defect formation in automotive painting. Using historical production data from Lucky Motor Corporation Limited, models based on linear regression, support vector machines (SVM), and random forests were developed and validated under various process conditions. The best-performing model achieved an R² of 0.94, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of …
Fleeting Roots, Jonathan Tirado
Fleeting Roots, Jonathan Tirado
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Onomichi, Japan carries a quiet crisis. Across its hillside arcades, akiya (abandoned properties) outnumber active storefronts, hollowing a town once defined by its dense, walkable culture. Fleeting Roots proposes a decentralized arts and fabrication campus woven through ten existing buildings along the Hondori Arcade, treating vacancy not as decay but as raw material for civic return.
The project rejects the museum impulse that often shadows preservation work. Heritage here is not frozen for tourist consumption. It is reactivated as a site of mutual cultural production, where local craft, visiting practice, and everyday commerce share the same vernacular shell. A precise …

A Dye-Sensitized Photo-Supercapacitor Enabled By Commercial Carbon-Based Intermediate Electrodes, Victoria Bishop, Wei Wei
A Dye-Sensitized Photo-Supercapacitor Enabled By Commercial Carbon-Based Intermediate Electrodes, Victoria Bishop, Wei Wei
Michigan Tech Publications
A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) employing a Titania (TiO₂) photoanode sensitized with N3 dye was integrated with a carbon-based supercapacitor to form a three-electrode photo-supercapacitor device. In this architecture, a double-sided carbon-based electrode functions as a dual-purpose intermediate electrode, serving simultaneously as the counter electrode for the DSSC: facilitating efficient redox electrolyte regeneration and as an electrode in an electric double-layer capacitor for energy storage. Four commercially available carbon-based materials, namely, graphite, activated carbon, mesoporous carbon (MC), and graphene, were systematically evaluated as intermediate electrodes to assess their influence on device performance. Prior to integration, the standalone DSSC and supercapacitor …
The Impact Of Optimization Approximation Algorithms On The Performance Of The Bht-Qaoa, Ali Al-Bayaty, Marek Perkowski
The Impact Of Optimization Approximation Algorithms On The Performance Of The Bht-Qaoa, Ali Al-Bayaty, Marek Perkowski
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article investigates the performance impact of five classical optimization approximation algorithms on our previously introduced quantum search algorithm, termed the Boolean–Hamiltonians Transform for Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (BHT-QAOA), to effectively search for all best-approximated solutions for Boolean-based problems. These optimization approximation algorithms are BFGS, L-BFGS-B, SLSQP, COBYLA, and COBYQA. Their performance impact is evaluated and compared using two proposed performance metrics—(i) the final number of function evaluations (the lower numbers denote the best optimization approximation algorithms) and (ii) the final quality of qubit measurements (the higher values indicate all best-approximated solutions were found for a problem). Arbitrary classical Boolean …

Between Code And Context: Empowering Qualitative Researchers To Leverage Ai With Rigor And Responsibility, Tito Dimas Atmawijaya
The Qualitative Report
Diana Garcia Quevedo and Josue Kuri’s AI for Qualitative Research: A Hands-On Guide for Management Scholars (2026) offers a timely and accessible introduction to leveraging large language models (LLMs) for qualitative analysis in management research. Organized into two parts—theoretical foundations and hands-on applications—the book equips researchers with both conceptual understanding and practical programming skills to integrate AI tools responsibly into their analytical workflows. Garcia Quevedo, whose research at ESCP Business School centres on gender, entrepreneurship, and AI-driven qualitative methods, and Kuri, a principal scientist with extensive expertise in AI and network systems, provide a unique interdisciplinary perspective. This review examines …
Algorithms And The Duty To Explain, Tatiana Dancy
Algorithms And The Duty To Explain, Tatiana Dancy
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
This article addresses the judicial duty to explain a decision that is informed by the output of a predictive algorithm. In discharging this duty, courts generally point to evidence about how the algorithm performs: the reason for using an algorithm just is that it makes accurate predictions for all groups within the target population, without causing unjustified disparities between them. As predictive performance can be validated statistically, judges have not sought access to the algorithm itself. I argue for a more robust approach to transparency in certain cases, which involve predictions about individual behaviour. In these cases, there are reasons …

Cyberfeminism And The Digital Divide: A Study Of The #Metoo Movement In Assam, India, Uddipana Kalita
Cyberfeminism And The Digital Divide: A Study Of The #Metoo Movement In Assam, India, Uddipana Kalita
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines how cyberfeminist politics in India are shaped by a layered digital divide, focusing on the #MeToo movement in Assam (Northeast India) as a regionally situated site of feminist voices, exclusion, and contested recognition. While digital visibility has enabled new forms of public naming and solidarity, this paper argues that visibility does not automatically translate into justice, as participation and audibility are structured by uneven access, device control, language hierarchies, and policing of credibility. This study is guided by two research questions: 1) How does the digital divide shape who can participate and be recognized within the #MeToo …

Never Trust, Always Verify, Securing Medicare's Future To Defend Against Ai Driven Cyber Threats, Dana G. Jones
Never Trust, Always Verify, Securing Medicare's Future To Defend Against Ai Driven Cyber Threats, Dana G. Jones
DePaul Journal of Health Care Law
Healthcare cybersecurity stands at a pivotal juncture, analogous to the Cold War's most perilous moments. When President Ronald Reagan declared "trust but verify"[1] during nuclear disarmament negotiations with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, he established systematic verification as the cornerstone of security in high-stakes environments where the cost of misplaced trust meant potential human extinction. Today, the rapid integration of artificial intelligence and networked medical devices into America's healthcare infrastructure has created stakes equally grave for the nation's sixty-five million Medicare beneficiaries[2]; however, the threat landscape has evolved beyond Reagan's paradigm. Modern healthcare cannot afford even conditional …
