The purpose of this study was to develop an intra-district allocation-funding model for the Clark County School District (CCSD). Two models, a linear formula and a formula with a non-linear component, were developed and evaluated against a set of criteria from the research literature on characteristics of optimal funding formulas. Simulations of these models' impact on elementary, middle, and high schools in the Clark County School District were performed to ascertain the redistributive effect under two separate conditions, the first keeping current funding levels constant, and the second considering additional funding; The simulations indicated that under Model II, a linear …

Water and its use or loss is critically important in the Southwestern United States where population growth is rapidly approaching the limit of available drinking water. It is therefore important to gain an understanding of water use by native and non-native species to ensure that sufficient water remains to maintain native ecosystems. This study examines water loss by the non-native tree species Tamarix ramosissima (saltcedar) at the leaf, branch and whole stand level using traditional methodologies as well as remote sensing. Antipredator behaviors such as vigilance are often costly because they must be traded off with other activities, such as feeDing To assess geographic patterns of vigilance behavior in bighorn sheep, I tested the large-scale hypothesis that vigilance in bighorn sheep would differ between populations as a result of spatial heterogeneity in predation regimes. Mean vigilance as well as the covariation of vigilance with environmental factors such as group size and distance from escape terrain were predicted to differ among regions with and without predators. Limited research has been conducted on the paleoclimatic significance of glacial and periglacial features in the Great Basin. Glacial features in the range were first recognized and described by early explorers (Gilbert, 1875; Simpson; 1876 and Russell, 1884) and subsequent authors have continued to substantiate and elaborate on earlier reports (Heald, 1956; Kramer, 1962; Currey, 1969; Peigat, 1980; Osborn and Bevis, 2001). The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide conditions on forage quality for the desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), using a common diet component, Bromus rubens. Nitrogen balance was monitored for tortoises fed pelleted diets reflecting the nitrogen levels of Bromus plants grown under elevated and ambient CO2 conditions, with varying potassium levels (3.5% and 1.4% DWB). Nitrogen content in the diet approached a positive correlation with total diet intake (p = 0.11), and was positively correlated with nitrogen loss at alpha = 0.10 (p = 0.08) and yet remained positively correlated with nitrogen …

This qualitative study investigated the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) in an online ESL composition course. The study analyzed the correspondence between three Koreans and one Russian participant with their instructor that occurred through the WebCT computer-mediated communication (CMC) software tools of asynchronous e-mail and discussion boards and synchronous chat. The results indicated that, (1) personal background issues, (2) personal views of the instructor, and (3) motivation, attitude, and personal awareness of tool utilization impacted the participants' use of the CMC tools and this in turn impacted the ZPD. The behavioral thermoregulation of the red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, was investigated and the environmental parameters of crayfish burrows were measured in situ. Although temperatures within burrows fluctuated less than surface temperatures in the Mojave Desert, crayfish can experience sub-optimal temperatures inside the burrow. In the laboratory, P. clarkii heated and cooled more rapidly in water than in air, selected a water temperature of 22°C, and avoided water temperatures above 31°C and below 12°C. P. clarkii displayed three main shuttling behaviors between water and air and the relative amounts of these behaviors and the time spent in air were significantly …

This study developed an understanding of women's sense of self. Using the Humanistic perspective of self image, which is one's perception of one's self that includes a person's perception of his/her personality, ability and images of his/her body (Coon, 1992). This micro-ethnography included 21 female participants obtained from an expert hair stylist's clientele. These participants were either interviewed, completed personality questionnaires and/or completed follow-up and member check questionnaires. Several analyses were completed with the acquired data which resulted in rich and descriptive data. Findings indicate that participants associated their hair with their sense of self. A rate equation model including all physically relevant surface processes is developed for the study of In segregation in InGaN and Mg segregation in Mg-GaN MBE growth. In InGaN growth, the simulations were carried for a variety of growth conditions spanning the growth parameter space: substrate temperature in the range of 500--700°C: Ga flux in the range of 1.17--8.98 nm/min: In flux in the range of 0.39--28.74 nm/min and N flux in the range of 4.7--12 nm/min. To examine the relationship between selective mutism and anxiety, 15 children with selective mutism (SM) were compared to 15 children with anxiety disorders (AD) and a control group of 15 nonclinical children (CN). The study included children age 4--10 years and relied on information from multiple informants. Each participant was assessed by the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for Children for DSM-IV, Child Behavior Checklist, Teacher Report Form, Behavioral Style Questionnaire, and the Family Environment Scale. Results indicate that SM children closely resemble AD children. The SM and AD groups substantially differed from the CN group with regards to internalizing behavior …

This study determined the physiological responses of female fire fighters to two similar bouts of work in the heat. Peak heart rates (HR), peak oxygen consumption (VO2), peak rectal temperatures (Trec), peak mean skin temperature (MST), and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were compared between two work bouts which were separated by a standard recovery period. Seven female fire fighters walked for twenty minutes in complete fire fighting ensembles at 50% of their VO2max in a 40°C environment. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the distribution of phosphorus among three different compartments of the Upper Pond at the Nature Preserve at the Clark County Wetlands Park in Las Vegas, NV: influent and effluent water, sediments, and plants. Samples were collected from September 2002 to January of 2003 and analyzed for phosphorus content. Results showed that the Upper Pond removed 55% of the ortho phosphate (OP) and 39% of the total phosphorus (TP) loadings during the study period. Effects Of A Heat Acclimation Program On Physiologic And Psychological Responses To Work And Heat While Wearing Fire Ensemble, Dale Anthony Branks

Heat acclimation program effects on rectal temperature and heart rate during walks in the heat wearing structural fire protective ensemble (FE) were examined. On six consecutive days, male subjects (N = 7) walked 30 minutes on a treadmill (46--53% V˙O2peak) within a 40 +/- 2°C, 20--22% r.h. environment, wearing FE. Rectal (Trec) mean skin (Tsk), and rectal-skin temperature gradient (T rec-Tsk), heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), minute ventilation (VE), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), rating of thermal discomfort (RTD), sweat rate and Na+ and K+ were assessed daily. Significance (p < 0.05) was determined by one way repeated measures ANOVA. Average heart rate, and daily sweat Na+ and K+ concentrations were the only variables observed to decrease significantly during the six days. These changes however were small and represent a questionable practical benefit. Therefore, a six day heat acclimation program during summer months provides no benefit to work in the heat while wearing FE.

This thesis explores the identity construction and subject positions of gay male foster and adoptive parents. Using late twentieth and early twenty-first century cultural texts, I apply a Foucaultian perspective to analyze how controversies over gay adoptions articulate shifts in contemporary American discourses of homosexuality and the family. Identities available to homosexuals have shifted since the nineteenth century; this thesis looks at the emergence of a new contested identity for homosexuals as adoptive parents at the turn of the twenty-first century by employing Foucaultian methodological techniques of archaeology. The response of human glioma spheroids to ALA-mediated photodynamic therapy subjected to various optical dose delivery schemes is investigated. In particular, the effects of fluence, fluence rate, light dose fractionation and long-term repeat PDT is considered. Improved PDT response was found for low fluence rate photodynamic treatments i.e. those at or below 25 mW cm-2 . Results are consistent with the self-sensitized singlet oxygen mediated photobleaching model of Georgakoudi et al (Georgakoudi, 1998., in which the response is attributed to the deposition of singlet oxygen to a larger volume, i.e., deeper into the spheroid. This research evaluates the quality of urban runoff, from various nonpoint sources during dry weather flows (DWF) and wet weather flows (WWF) in the Las Vegas Valley. Standard constituents in urban runoff were measured to assess the quality of urban runoff, to identify the possible sources of DWF (groundwater flows, excessive irrigation and car washing) and to determine the quality of runoff from residential areas and parking lots during WWF.
