Objective: To address the mental health needs of youths who are arrest- ed and detained in Illinois, an initiative was designed and implemented that identified youths with psychotic or affective disorders, linked them to community services, and monitored their cases. This study assessed whether such linkage is possible and whether it improves clinical and forensic outcomes. Methods: Under the initiative, court staff refer youths who may have a mental illness to a clinical liaison. If the youth is eligible for the program, the liaison works with the family to develop a community-based action plan. For the analysis presented here, the …

Thirty years ago in Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court launched what it hoped would be a cultural revolution. Here are the inaugural words: "The right of privacy...is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate a pregnancy".

The revolution has progressed rapidly. The counter-strategies tried so far have been ineffective: we are no closer to overruling Roe than in 1973; the abortion liberty occupies an organizing place in our culture and politics; the number of abortions annually has remained remarkably steady over three decades.

By default, the courts are inventing health law. The law governing the American health system arises from an unruly mix of statutes, regulations, and judge-crafted doctrines conceived, in the main, without medical care in mind. Courts are ill-equipped to put order to this chaos, and until recently they have been disinclined to try. But political gridlock and popular ire over managed care have pushed them into the breach, and the Supreme Court has become a proactive health policy player. WHEN DELEGATES AND observers to the third United Nations conference against racism left the premises in Durban, South Africa, exhausted and still stunned by the difficulties they had faced, they did not have a hint of what was soon to happen. They knew that only by means of accommodation and last minute procedural maneuvers had they managed to reach a "consensus" on the final documents. This should have been enough to tone down any possible enthusiasm. Nevertheless, for most of them, results had undoubtedly had positive aspects. There were reasons to believe the Conference had been worthwhile.

The treatment of "aliens," particularly noncitizens of color, under the U.S. immigration laws reveals volumes about domestic race relations in the nation. A deeply complicated, often volatile, relationship exists between racism directed toward U.S. citizens and that aimed at noncitizens. The United States has a long history of treating racial minorities in the United States harshly, at times savagely. Noncitizen racial minorities, as foreigners not part of the national community, generally have been subject to similar, although not identical, cruelties but also have suffered deportation, indefinite detention, and more. Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The voltammetric behaviour of cysteine was investigated in the presence of Cu(II) ions at a rotating glassy carbon electrode (RGCE). Two reduction peaks related to the successive reduction of the cysteine complexes of Cu(II) and Cu(I) ions were observed at --0.30 and --0.60 V vs. SCE respectively. These peaks were increased upon the addition of cysteine into a pH 9.20 borate buffer solution containing 0.1 M KNO_{3} and 1.0 x 10^{-5} M Cu(II) ions. The calibration curve was linear in the concentration range of 5.0 x 10^{-10}- 2.0 x 10^{-8} M for cysteine by utilising the peak current at --0.6 …

Biochemical processes by chemoautotrophs such as nitrifiers and sulfide and iron oxidizers are used extensively in wastewater treatment. The research described in this dissertation involved the study of two selected biological processes utilized in wastewater treatment mediated by chemoautotrophic bacteria: nitrification (biological removal of ammonia and nitrogen) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal from odorous air using biofiltration.

A municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) receiving industrial dyeing discharge containing the azo dye, acid black 1 (AB1) failed to meet discharge limits, especially during the winter. Dyeing discharge mixed with domestic sewage was fed to sequencing batch reactors at 22oC and 7oC. …

Complex Decapod Burrows And Ecological Relationships In Modern And Pleistocene Intertidal Carbonate Environments, San Salvador Island, Bahamas, H. Allen Curran, Anthony J. Martin

Burrowing by thalassinidean shrimp in modern tropical, shallow-subtidal to intertidal carbonate environments is widespread and a powerful agent of bioturbation, particularly within sandy substrates. Deep and intense burrowing by callianassids commonly occurs along the intertidal margins of hypersaline lagoons throughout the Bahamas, such as Pigeon Creek on San Salvador Island, where the sediments of extensive sand flats are thoroughly bioturbated by Glypturusacanthochirus. In addition to dominating the deep-tier infauna, G. acanthochirus is a true ecosystem engineer, and its prodigious burrowing activity results in a highly mounded topography.
