The McMurdo Dry Valleys is the largest of the ice-free areas in Antarctica. Precipitation events in excess of 1 cm of snow accumulation are rare. During the winter, snow is transported by strong katabatic winds blowing from the polar plateau, and deposited into the lee of topographic features (e.g., stream channels and other topographic depressions). At the start of the austral summer (early October), as much as 10% of the valley soils may be covered by distributed snow patches. Because liquid water is the primary driver of biological, physical, and chemical processes in this polar desert, quantifying fluxes of water …

Previous research on first-generation college students has concentrated largely on students enrolled in community colleges or universities. This study examines first generation students at a single, highly selective, four-year, liberal arts college, and uses an academic literacies approach to understand the relationship between first-generation status and written and oral literacies as illustrated in academic papers and classroom performance. Twelve first-generation college students were interviewed extensively about their early literacy experiences, family background, relationship to family and home community, high school preparation, selection of and transition into a highly selective college, and written and oral literacy experiences at that institution. This study explored the relationship between the age of development of 5 locomotor behaviors, the level of infant activity for the locomotor behaviors, and the performance of the sample of infants on standardized indices of infant development (Fagan Test of Infant Intelligence, FTII; Bayley Scales of Infant Development, BSID-II). A total of 157 infants were assessed at 6, 9, and 12 months for their activity levels on the 5 locomotor behaviors of interest, and the age at which each locomotor behavior occurred was obtained through records maintained by each infants' caregiver. This exploratory study examined factors that predict parental satisfaction in the transition of a child with a disability from Early Intervention to preschool at the age of three. In addition to a thorough literature review, theoretical preparation included focus groups with service coordinators, receiving agencies and parents. The sample participants were 62 parent respondents to an Early Intervention transition to preschool questionnaire distributed by Rhode Island Parent Information Network (RIPIN). A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted on proposed factors of parental empowerment, communication and culture, which did not emerge as discrete indicators of parental satisfaction. The overarching theme of this thesis work is the development of the stomach in summer flounder, which occurs during metamorphosis. During normal development, proliferation of the gastric epithelium increases in early metamorphosis when incipient gastric glands first appear, and declines at late metamorphosis when gastric glands are completely developed. Inhibiting thyroid hormone prevents the increase in proliferation and the differentiation of glands, while high levels of thyroid hormone accelerate gastric gland differentiation but also inhibit proliferation. The hormone is necessary to cause cell proliferation, but at high doses it appears to selectively stimulate differentiation, suggesting that the steady increase in …

There is a paucity of research that explores refugee experiences with organized violence and healing following such events. Available research typically addresses acts of domination and oppression rather than life stories of individuals. IRS24 is a strain of Deinococcus radiodurans carrying mutations in two loci, uvrA and irrE, rendering it sensitive to the lethal effects of UV and ionizing radiation. These sensitivities can be reversed by introducing the wild type irrE allele back into IRS24 via natural transformation. The irrE allele was localized to a 970bp region of D. radiodurans R1 Chromosome I containing one putative open reading frame, DR0167, and 179bp of upstream sequence. Subsequent sequence analysis of the irrE allele in IRS24 revealed a transition mutation at codon 111 of DR0167 (IrrE) resulting in an arginine to cysteine amino acid substitution. …

In this study, the effects of coupling agent type and structure, graft polymerization of coupling agents, interfacial wettability, coupling treatment and process, coupling agent distribution, and coupling agent performance on chemical coupling were investigated. Coupling mechanisms were established based on maleated polyethylene copolymers. For maleated wood veneer, the relationship among graft rate, concentration, and retention of coupling agent followed three-dimensional parabloid models. This dissertation is an account of the synthesis, characterization, and application of novel water-soluble chiral calixarenes in spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis. It is divided into four sections. The first part describes the synthesis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) characterization of four p-t-butylcalix[4]arenes bearing L-amino acid moieties on their lower rims (CX4-AA). The structure and conformation of the derivatives have been determined using one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques. Proton and carbon-13 spectra show that the derivatives are tetra-substituted and adopt a cone conformation. Calpastatin activity at 24 h postmortem is inversely proportional to postmortem tenderization and accounts for a greater proportion of the variation in beef tenderness. Tenderness was determined by measurement of 24 h postmortem longissimus muscle calpastatin activity (CA) and Warner-Bratzler shear force after 7 and 14 d of steak aging. The quantitative inheritance of tenderness in Brahman steers was investigated phenotypically by Multiple Trait Derivative-Free Restricted Maximum Likelihood (MTDFREML) procedures and genotypically by using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP), a microsatellite marker, and DNA sequence analyses. The purpose of this study was to examine the level of cultural competence among faculty teaching in baccalaureate nursing programs in Louisiana and to identify associated factors. A survey was mailed to all 313 faculty members identified as actively involved in teaching in any baccalaureate nursing program in Louisiana and 163 valid responses were obtained. The Cultural Diversity Questionnaire for Nurse Educators, a researcher designed instrument intended to measure cultural competence, was the instrument used. Inflammation is a component of the innate immune response. However, severe or prolonged inflammation can be detrimental. Dietary n-3 fatty acid supplementation has proven clinical benefits in chronic inflammatory diseases, most likely due to reduced synthesis of inflammatory mediators and inhibition of lymphocyte proliferation and function. The purposes of this study were to characterize alterations in inflammatory mediator production, and lymphocyte proliferation, in dogs fed a diet consisting of 0.65% n-3 fatty acids (DMB) with an n-6:n-3 fatty acid ratio of 3.4:1.
