The molecular basis of selectivity in G-protein receptor coupling has been explored by comparing the abilities of G-protein heterotrimers containing chimeric Galpha subunits, comprised of various regions of Gi1alpha, Gtalpha, and Gqalpha, to stabilize the high affinity agonist binding state of serotonin, adenosine, and muscarinic receptors. The data indicate that multiple and distinct determinants of selectivity exist for individual receptors. While the A1 adenosine receptor does not distinguish between Gi1alpha and Gtalpha sequences, the 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B serotonin and M2 muscarinic receptors can couple with Gi1 but not Gt. Melatonin Implants Have No Effect On The Testis Volume And Body Weight In Mongolian Gerbils, Alper Karakaş, Bülent Gündüz

Photoperiod is an important environmental cue in the regulation of reproductive activity in Mongolian gerbils. Photoperiodic information is ultimately transduced into a hormonal signal by the pineal gland. We examined the effect of constant-release melatonin capsules on the testicular size and body weights of male Mongolian gerbils exposed to a long (14L: 10D) photoperiod. Three groups were formed: control (n = 10), intact + melatonin implant (n = 10) and pinealectomy + melatonin implant (n = 10). The movement of 2 different isolates of an insect parasitic nematode species (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Tur-H2 and H. bacteriophora Tur-H1) in vertical columns was tested under laboratory conditions. We have found significant differences in the movements of H. bacteriophora Tur-H2 and H. bacteriophora Tur-H1 towards the Galleria mellonella larvae as a host. The maximum nematode infection rate inside the host was observed on the third day of the trial period for both species. Several species of entomopathogenic nematodes in the families Steinernematidae (Steinernema) and Heterorhabditidae (Heterorhabditis) are being produced commercially and used as biological control agents against many soil insect pests and insects in cryptic habitats in many parts of the world. Antimicrobial Activity Of Viscum Album L. Subsp. Abietis (Wiesb), Ömer Ertürk, Hati̇ce Kati, Nuretti̇n Yayli, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ

Viscum album L. subsp. abietis (Wiesb.) (Loranthaceae) is extensively used for treatment in traditional medicine. This plant was collected in the region of Artvin, northern Turkey. Different concentrations of n-hexane extract were tested using the agar diffusion technique against 6 bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae and Proteus vulgaris), and 1 fungus (Candida albicans). We determined that fractions 6 and 7 of n-hexane extract of V. album subsp. abietis showed antimicrobial activity against the micro-organisms tested.

It is well known that Trichoderma spp. can be used as a biological control agent. In this study, Trichoderma isolates were obtained from 31 different Eskisehir soil samples. The biocontrol and antifungal effects of these isolates against various plant pathogen fungi were determined. We found that all filtrates of Trichoderma harzianum T9, T10, T15 and T19 were effective against plant pathogens Fusarium culmarum, F. oxysporum, F. moniliforme, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotium rolfsii, Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici and Drechslera sorokiniana. Among these isolates, T. harzianum T19 showed a wide range of inhibitory effects on plant pathogens. F. oxysporum was found to be …

The transcription of the SUC2 gene is regulated by glucose repression and the derepression mechanism in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The Mig1p-Tup1p-Ssn6p repressor complex, hexokinase PII and nucleosomes are required for the repression of the SUC2 gene. The Snf/Swi and SAGA complexes act on Mig1p and nucleosomes in low glucose media. SUC2 transcription thus becomes activated. In this study, it is shown that the transcription factors Gcr2p and Sgc1p are also required for the high level transcription of the SUC2 gene. SUC2 transcription and the invertase synthesis decreased at significant levels in gcr2 and sgc1 mutant yeast cells. In addition, …

Experimental Infection Of Telorchis And Echinostoma Trematode In The Green Frog, Rana Clamitans, Jennifer Morphew

Two species of trematode common in North American aquatic ecosystems are Telorchis and Echinostoma. These trematodes were experimentally infected in the green frog, Rana clamitans under two different experimental conditions. The first of these investigates the parasitic infection affect on growth rate and activity level of the frog, while the other examines whether vegetation abundance affects the infection rate. Results were largely opposite to hypothesis. In the growth rate experiment, growth rate did not differ among treatments. The stage of development, however, did differ among the treatments, where the Echinostoma-infected tadpoles ended at about 2 Gosner stages more advanced than …

This study explores the essential factors needed in adolescent youth programs, which intend to promote resilience, well being, and meaning making as a part of the healthy development of adolescent girls. The research explores the role of the arts, community building, mentoring, service, and reflection on this development. The context is Side by Side, a summer leadership development program. In a qualitative case study approach, the data is organized primarily from the written and spoken words of seven young women who participated in the program .

This qualitative research study examines some of the ways in which the healing process takes place in adults who have experienced dissociation, and who have most likely been psychologically traumatized before full language development. The impact of early trauma on human cognitive, socio-emotional, and spiritual development are explored within the context of participant narratives in order to develop an understanding of what may be helpful in developing effective teaching strategies for clinical and teacher education. This study investigated the symbols of representation young children choose to incorporate when they draw route maps of familiar interior spaces, based on the premise that development of map-making skills might unfold in much the same stage-like manner as the development of the ability to draw the human figure. Agents operating in the real world have to deal with a constantly changing and only partially predictable environment and are nevertheless expected to choose reasonable actions quickly. One way to address this problem is to use behavior networks as proposed by Maes, which support real-time decision making. Robotic soccer appears to be one domain where behavior networks have been proven to be particularly successful. Structure Property Correlation methods such as regression analysis and pattern recognition are applied to predict the molecular properties of two members of an ampicillin homologous series. The pentyl and hexyl esters of ampicillin are also evaluated for their similarity to other penicillins by use of multiple regression, contingency tables, cluster analysis, correspondence analysis, self organizing tree algorithms, factor analysis, principal component analysis, box plots, and other graphing methods. Many genes can play a role in multiple biological processes or molecular functions. Identifying multifunctional genes at the genome-wide level and studying their properties can shed light upon the complexity of molecular events that underpin cellular functioning, thereby leading to a better understanding of the functional landscape of the cell. However, to date, genome-wide analysis of multifunctional genes (and the proteins they encode) has been limited. Here we introduce a computational approach that uses known functional annotations to extract genes playing a role in at least two distinct biological processes. With his proclamation in 1998 that "IT is India's tomorrow", Prime Minister Vajpayee captured a vision of a 21st century India substantially different from that of the previous century, with its high levels of poverty, bloated bureaucracies, and protectionist policies. He envisioned the new India as a major IT power, fully integrated with the global economy, bringing about substantial domestic and international benefit.
