Quaking aspen is the most widely distributed tree species in North America and an asset to sociological, ecological, and hydrological land values in the western United States. In recognition of these values, land managers seek means to oppose a regional decline of aspen in the Intermountain West—a decline apparently in progress since the close of the Pleistocene and driven by climate change, fire suppression, and increasing ungulate densities. One location of special relevance to this decline is the Utah-Colorado Book Cliffs, a discrete boundary of quaking aspen’s geographic range and a potential biogeographic corridor between the sub-alpine communities of the …

OBJECTIVE: To compare the epidemiologic, clinical, and pathologic characteristics of symptomatic and incidental renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in Jordan, with some emphasis on age distribution and its potential effect in defining groups of patients that may benefit from early detection programs. We compared our results with the published western figures. METHODS: Records of 119 patients with renal tumors diagnosed during the period January 1992 to December 2001 at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan were reviewed. The Duty To “Expect The Unexpected”: Mitigating Extreme Natural Threats To The Global Commons Such As Asteroid Impacts With The Earth, Evan R. Seamone

This Article develops a framework to govern the interactions of nations cooperating to mitigate the threat of unexpected natural disasters that potentially could affect them all. It uses asteroid impact with the Earth as the representative example because this is an "unusual and extreme" disaster that has created difficulty for lawmakers due to its many unanswerable questions. By explaining a number of the legal requirements necessary to mitigate such threats, this Article identifies legal principles that apply equally to natural threats throughout the global commons. Manganese (Mn) is an essential element and a neurotoxicant. Regulation of Mn movement across the blood–brain barrier (BBB) contributes to whether the brain Mn concentration is functional or toxic. In plasma, Mn associates with water, small molecular weight ligands and proteins. Mn speciation may influence the kinetics of its movement through the BBB. In the present work, the brain influx rates of ⁵⁴Mn²⁺, ⁵⁴Mn citrate and ⁵⁴Mn transferrin (⁵⁴Mn Tf) were determined using the in situ brain perfusion technique.
