Spatial Heterogeneity Of Soil Nutrients, Nitrogen Dynamics, And Vegetation In A 3rd Order Stream Floodplain In Southwestern West Virginia, David Allen Dick
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Soil processes often exhibit spatial heterogeneity within ecosystems and this heterogeneity may influence community structure. This study was conducted to determine spatial patterns and variability of soil nutrients and plant communities within different vegetation types in a stream floodplain in southwestern West Virginia. One 5-m × 5-m site was established in each of three vegetation/drainage types: pasture (PA), old field (OF), and wetland scar (SC). Pasture and SC sites were located ~25 m apart on flat bottomland; the OF site was located on a moderate slope 6.3 m above bottomland, ~200 m from PA and SC. A 10-m × 1-m …

Determination Of The Efficacy Of The Antigen Extraction Technique In The Pathfinder-Eia Chlamydia Detection System, George Ndeta, Broderick Eribo, James Gregory
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
There is need for a fast and reliable method to detect Chlamydia trachomatis. With new technology, a technologist can be processing newly arrived swab samples at the same time that an old batch is being assayed. A technologist should be familiar with the bright apple-green fluorescence of the Chlamydia organism in the MicroTrack technique.

A Biologic Model For Assessment Of Osseous Strain Patterns And Plating Systems In The Human Maxilla, L. Russell Alberts, Kenneth O. Phillips, Harold K. Tu, Warren W. Stinson, Andrew Friedman
United States Army: Publications
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine a biomechanical model and to help answer fundamental questions that relate to rigid plate fixation in the maxilla. Specifically, we sought to elucidate the principal strain patterns generated in the maxilla secondary to masticatory forces as well as the amount of permanent deformational changes incurred due to these loading forces.
Materials and Methods: Cadaveric heads with the mandible removed were defleshed and placed in a 2-part testing rig to hold and position the skull for testing in a standard material testing system. Rosette strain gages were attached at predefined points on the skull, …

The Prevalence And Severity Of Coronary Artery Calcification On Coronary Artery Computed Tomography In Black And White Subjects, Timothy C. Lee, Patrick G. O’Malley, Irwin Feuerstein, Allen J. Taylor
United States Army: Publications
OBJECTIVES We studied the relationship between coronary artery calcium (CAC) and race in asymptomatic, active-duty personnel in the Prospective Army Coronary Calcium (PACC) project.
BACKGROUND Valid cardiovascular risk assessments in black Americans using coronary artery computed tomography (coronary CT) require the generalizability of population-based CAC score distributions derived from primarily white patient populations.
METHODS Among 1,000 consecutive participants (mean age, 42 ± 2 years; range, 40 to 45 years), 999 participants underwent coronary CT and indicated a specific racial affiliation. This included white, non-Hispanic in 699 (69.9%) participants and black, non-Hispanic in 194 (19.4%) participants. Univariate associations between race and …

Rodent Sperm Analysis In Field-Based Ecological Risk Assessment: Pilot Study At Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant, Ravenna, Ohio, Lawrence V. Tannenbaum, Matthew Bazar, Melanie S. Hawkins, Barney W. Cornaby, Elizabeth A. Ferguson, L. Chantelle Carroll, Patrick F. Ryan
United States Army: Publications
Ecological risk assessment (ERA) guidance recommends that field-truthing efforts proceed when modeled hazard quotients (HQs) suggest that toxicological effects are occurring to site receptors. To date, no field methods have been proposed by the regulatory community that can lead to definitive determinations of acceptable or unacceptable risk for birds and mammals, the two terrestrial classes of receptors that are commonly assessed using the HQ method. This paper describes rodent sperm analysis (RSA) as a viable method to be applied in the field at sites with historical contamination. RSA is capable of detecting biological differences that bear on reproduction, a highly …
Abandoned Mine Waste Repositories: Site Selction, Design, And Cost, K. L. Ford, M. Walker
Abandoned Mine Waste Repositories: Site Selction, Design, And Cost, K. L. Ford, M. Walker
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is conducting priority cleanups of abandoned mine sites on public lands. Typically, these sites contain tailings piles, cyanide heaps, and rock dumps that historically were constructed in or near drainages and now are releasing pollutants into watersheds. In compliance with regulations, BLM selects the most environmentally suitable site for removing mining waste and placing it into repositories. Repositories have different design features, and the design selected should be based on site-specific conditions and the results of water balance models. A Geographic Information System (GIS) can be a useful tool for screening and selecting a …

Aerial Surveys Of Cliff-Nesting Raptors, Robert J. Ritche, Ann M. Wildman, David A. Yokel
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
In summer 1999, an extensive aerial survey of cliff-nesting raptors was conducted in the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska (NPR–A) on Alaska’s North Slope. No similarly extensive survey had been conducted since 1977. In the interim, the regional population of the Arctic peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus tundrius) had increased, as shown by monitoring along the Colville River. The 1999 survey assessed the present abundance and distribution of the peregrine falcon, as well as the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) in most of the NPR–A. Specifically excluded from …

Characterization Of Inflammation In Tendinitis And Application Of Electromagnetic Fields, Brittany Jayne Wetzel
Characterization Of Inflammation In Tendinitis And Application Of Electromagnetic Fields, Brittany Jayne Wetzel
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tendinitis is a disorder caused by inflammation of the tendon fibers, characterized by collagen fiber disruption and cellular infiltration. Current treatments are lacking, in that they often are associated with unwanted side effects or can even cause an increased amount of damage via scar tissue formation. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) have been shown to be useful in treating wounds and healing non-union fractures. The purpose of the current study was to develop a quantitative rat model of mild tendinitis and subsequently to examine the efficacy of therapeutic electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on this injury. The EMFs used in the current study …

Pain For Pen: Gaspara Stampa's Stile Novo, Amy R. Insalaco
Quidditas
The Italian critic and scholar, Benedetto Croce (1866–1952) dismisses Gaspara Stampa's Rime (1553) thus:
She was a woman; And usually a woman, when she is not given to ape men, uses poetry and submits it to her affections because she loves her lover or her own children more than poetry. The lazy practice of women is revealed in their scanty theoretical and contemplative power.
For him, Stampa’s poetry is somehow inferior to her male counterpart’s poetry because it lacks “theoretical and contemplative power.” This essay will analyze aspects of Stampa’s poetry which disprove this claim.

Expression Of Spot In Borrelia Burgdorferi During Serum Starvation, Marc B. Concepcion, David R. Nelson
Expression Of Spot In Borrelia Burgdorferi During Serum Starvation, Marc B. Concepcion, David R. Nelson
Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications
Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, is transmitted by the tick Ixodes scapularis. A 2.9-kb fragment containing a putative spoT gene was isolated from B. burgdorferi genomic DNA by PCR amplification and cloned into a pBAD24 vector. The cloned gene complemented Escherichia coli mutant strain CF1693, which contains deletions of both the relA and spoT genes. The spoT gene in E. coli encodes a bifunctional enzyme capable of synthesizing and degrading (p)ppGpp, which mediates the stringent response during carbon source starvation. B. burgdorferi has been reported to have a stress response to serum starvation. Thin-layer chromatography …

The gene for vitellogenin, an egg yolk protein precursor, is usually silent in male fish but can be induced by estrogen exposure. For this reason, vitellogenin production in male fish has become a widely used indicator of exposure to exogenous estrogens or estrogen mimics in the aquatic environment. The utility of this indicator to predict impacts on fish reproductive success is unclear because information on the relationship between male plasma vitellogenin and reproductive end points in male and female fish is limited. In the research reported in this article, we investigated whether the presence of male plasma vitellogenin is a …
