Simultaneous Data-Based Optimization Of A 1d-Ecosystem Model At Three Locations In The North Atlantic: Part I—Method And Parameter Estimates, Markus Schartau, Andreas Oschlies Jan 2003

Simultaneous Data-Based Optimization Of A 1d-Ecosystem Model At Three Locations In The North Atlantic: Part I—Method And Parameter Estimates, Markus Schartau, Andreas Oschlies

Journal of Marine Research

An optimization experiment is performed with a vertically resolved, nitrogen-based ecosystem model, composed of four state variables (NPZD-model): dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N), phytoplankton (P), herbivorous zooplankton (Z) and detritus (D). Parameter values of the NPZD-model are optimized while assimilating observations at three locations in the North Atlantic simultaneously, namely at the sites of the Bermuda Atlantic Time-Series Study (BATS; 31N 64W), of the North Atlantic Bloom Experiment (NABE; 47N 20W), and of Ocean Weather Ship-India (OWS-INDIA; 59N 19W). A method is described for a simultaneous optimization which effectively merges …

Evaluation Of Excess 234th Activity In Sediments As An Indicator Of Food Quality For Deep-Sea Deposit Feeders, Amanda W. J. Demopoulos, Craig R. Smith, David J. Demaster, William L. Fornes Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Excess 234th Activity In Sediments As An Indicator Of Food Quality For Deep-Sea Deposit Feeders, Amanda W. J. Demopoulos, Craig R. Smith, David J. Demaster, William L. Fornes

Journal of Marine Research

Deep-sea deposit feeders selectively ingest large volumes of sediment. Knowledge of the nature of this selectivity will help to elucidate the limiting nutritional requirements and geochemical impacts of these abundant animals. Shallow-water and theoretical studies suggest that deep-sea deposit feeders should select particles rich in protein, bacterial biomass, and/or chloropigment concentrations. Recent studies indicate that deep-sea megafaunal deposit feeders exhibit strong gut enrichment of excess (xs) 234Th activity, even though 234Thxs lacks nutritional value. To explore the significance of selective ingestion of 234Thxs activity, we evaluated the correlations between 234Thxs activity and three …

The Role Of Outflow Geometry In The Formation Of The Recirculating Bulge Region In Coastal Buoyant Outflows, Greg Avicola, Pablo Huq Jan 2003

The Role Of Outflow Geometry In The Formation Of The Recirculating Bulge Region In Coastal Buoyant Outflows, Greg Avicola, Pablo Huq

Journal of Marine Research

Density-driven coastal currents are a common feature in the world's coastal oceans. These currents may separate from the coastline due to variations in geometry. Past studies have shown that this separation may produce two distinctly different flow states: a continuation of the coastal current, or a recirculating gyre downshelf of, and attached to, the separation point. Laboratory experiments of coastal buoyant outflows (rotationally dominated, buoyancy driven) were undertaken to examine the role of bay geometry on the evolution of the outflow. Experiments were conducted on a rotating turntable in relatively deep water (such that the buoyant layer depth was much …

Motor Control Of Locomotor Hindlimb Posture In The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), Stephen M. Reilly, Richard W. Blob Jan 2003

Motor Control Of Locomotor Hindlimb Posture In The American Alligator (Alligator Mississippiensis), Stephen M. Reilly, Richard W. Blob

Publications

Crocodilians are unusual among quadrupedal tetrapods in their frequent use of a wide variety of hindlimb postures, ranging from sprawling to a more erect high walk. In this study, we use synchronized kinematic videos and electromyographic recordings to test how the activity patterns of hindlimb muscles in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis Daudin) differ between sprawling and more upright postures. Previous force platform analyses suggested that upright posture in alligators would require greater activation by hindlimb extensors to counter increases in the flexor moments exerted about joints by the ground reaction force during upright stance. Consistent with these predictions, ankle extensors …

Subtropical Dry Forest Trees With No Apparent Damage Sprout Following A Hurricane, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo Jan 2003

Subtropical Dry Forest Trees With No Apparent Damage Sprout Following A Hurricane, Skip Van Bloem, Peter G. Murphy, Ariel E. Lugo

Publications

Hurricane Georges passed over mature dry forest near Guánica, Puerto Rico in September, 1998. The trees of the dense, short-statured Guánica Forest have a multi-stemmed structure unique to the West Indies in the neo-tropics, a characteristic that has been difficult to explain. Following the hurricane, we measured sprout development below breast height on 1407 stems to assess how response to hurricane disturbance may influence dry forest structure. Basal sprouting increased 8-14 fold after Hurricane Georges. Basal sprouting was found on al- most 68% of damaged stems and, notably, on about 32% of undamaged stems. Basal sprouting was found in all …

The Anguish Of Snails: Native American Folklore In The West, Barre Toelken Jan 2003

The Anguish Of Snails: Native American Folklore In The West, Barre Toelken

All USU Press Publications

After a career of working and living with Native Americans and studying their traditions, Barre Toelken has written this sweeping study of Native American folklore in the West. Within a framework of performance theory, cultural worldview, and collaborative research, he examines Native American visual arts, dance, oral tradition (story and song), humor, and patterns of thinking and discovery to demonstrate what can be gleaned from Indian traditions by Natives and non-Natives alike. In the process he considers popular distortions of Indian beliefs, demystifies many traditions by showing how they can be comprehended within their cultural contexts, considers why some aspects …

Of Corpse, Peter Narvaez Jan 2003

Of Corpse, Peter Narvaez

All USU Press Publications

Laughter, contemporary theory suggests, is often aggressive in some manner and may be prompted by a sudden perception of incongruity combined with memories of past emotional experience. Given this importance of the past to our recognition of the comic, it follows that some "traditions" dispose us to ludic responses. The studies in Of Corpse: Death and Humor in Folklore and Popular Culture examine specific interactions of text (jokes, poetry, epitaphs, iconography, film drama) and social context (wakes, festivals, disasters) that shape and generate laughter. Uniquely, however, the essays here peruse a remarkable paradox-the convergence of death and humor.

Two studies …

Optimal Discounting In Control Problems That Span Multiple Generations, Frank Caliendo, Kenneth Lyon Jan 2003

Optimal Discounting In Control Problems That Span Multiple Generations, Frank Caliendo, Kenneth Lyon

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

The principal contribution of this paper is the linking together of separate control problems across multiple generations using the bequest motive, intergenerational altruism, rational expectations, and solution boundary conditions. We demonstrate that discounting at the market rate of interest is an endogenous characteristic of a general equilibrium, optimal control problem that spans multiple generations. Within the confines of our model, we prove that it is optimal to discount at the market rate of interest the social benefits to distant generations from immediate clean up at toxic waste sites if the current generation that bears the cleanup cost is perfectly altruistic …

The Costate Variable In A Stochastic Renewable Resource Model, Kenneth S. Lyon, Saket Pande Jan 2003

The Costate Variable In A Stochastic Renewable Resource Model, Kenneth S. Lyon, Saket Pande

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In this paper we discuss the costate variable in a stochastic optimal control model of a renewable natural resource, which we call a fishery. The role of the costate variable in deterministic control models has been discussed extensively in the literature. See, for example, Lyon (1999), Clark (1990, pp. 102-107), and Arrow and Kurz (1970, pp. 35-37); however, there is little discussion of this variable for stochastic models, even though the costate variable has similar roles in the two models. In both models the costate variable is a shadow value of the associated state variable, and as such has the …

Comparison Between Hydrogen And Dihydrogen Bonds Among H3bnh3, H2bnh2, And Nh3, T. Kar, Steve Scheiner Jan 2003

Comparison Between Hydrogen And Dihydrogen Bonds Among H3bnh3, H2bnh2, And Nh3, T. Kar, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Several possible binary complexes among ammonia-borane, aminoborane, and ammonia, via hydrogen and/or dihydrogen bonds, have been investigated to understand the effect of different hybridization. Møller–Plesset second-order perturbation theory with aug-cc-pVDZ basis set was used. The interaction energy is corrected for basis set superposition error, and the Morokuma–Kitaura method was employed to decompose the total interaction energy. Like H3BNH3, the sp2 hybridized H2BNH2 also participates in H- and dihydrogen bond formation. However, such bonds are weaker than their sp3 analogs. The contractions of BN bonds are associated with blueshift in …

The Star Quilt: A Symbol Of Lakota History And Worldviews, Bonnie Lou Mcjennett Jan 2003

The Star Quilt: A Symbol Of Lakota History And Worldviews, Bonnie Lou Mcjennett

Theses Digitization Project

When the United States government and troops attempted to destroy the Lakota culture by killing the buffalo, placing the Lakota on reservation, and forcing the Lakota to adopt European-Aemrican attitudes and behaviors, Lakota women preserved elements of their culture by symbolically sewing Lakota history and worldviews into the Star Quilt.

Do Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers Select Cavity Trees Based On Chemical Composition Of Pine Resin?, Richard N. Conner Jan 2003

Do Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers Select Cavity Trees Based On Chemical Composition Of Pine Resin?, Richard N. Conner

Faculty Publications

We examined resin chemistry of loblolly (Pinus taeda) and shortleaf (P. echinata) pines selected as cavity trees by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis) in eastern Texas. We sampled resin from (1) pines selected by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers that contained naturally excavated active cavities, (2) pines selected by forest biologists that contained artificially installed cavity inserts and were actively being used by Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, and (3) control pines of similar age and appearance to the active cavity trees. We hypothesized that if woodpeckers are inducing a change in resin chemistry by excavating resin wells, this change should …

Effects Of Controlled Dog Hunting On Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Christopher E. Comer Jan 2003

Effects Of Controlled Dog Hunting On Movements Of Female White-Tailed Deer, Christopher E. Comer

Faculty Publications

Understanding the responses of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to controlled dog hunting can aid in the effective implementation of canine-assisted population management strategies. We examined the 24-h diel movements of 13 radio-collared female deer exposed to dog hunting on the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina, where regulated dog hunting has occurred since 1965. We compared diel home range size, rate of travel, and distance between extreme diel locations before, during, and after hunts from 14 September-14 December 2002. Die1 home range size (F2,91= 7.71, P < 0.001) and distance between extreme diel locations (F2,9l= 6.78, P = 0.002) on hunt day were greater than 10-day pre- and …

Economic Analysis Of Sequestering Carbon In Green Ash Forests In The Lower Mississippi River Valley, Ching Hsun Huang, Gary D. Kronrad, Shiaolin D. Cheng Jan 2003

Economic Analysis Of Sequestering Carbon In Green Ash Forests In The Lower Mississippi River Valley, Ching Hsun Huang, Gary D. Kronrad, Shiaolin D. Cheng

Faculty Publications

Since the U.S. is the largest emitter of carbon dioxide (CO2), it has become crucial to develop options that are both cost effective and supportive of sustainable development to reduce atmospheric CO2. Electric utility companies have the options of reducing their use of fossil fuels, switching to alternative energy sources, increasing efficiency, or offsetting carbon emissions. This study determined the cost and profitability of sequestering carbon in green ash plantations, and the number of tons of carbon that can be sequestered. The profitability of green ash is $2,342 and $3,645 per acre on site indices (measurement of soil quality) 65 …

Six Parents Describe Ideal Adult Lives For Their Children With Significant Cognitive Disabilities, Barbara A. White

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to investigate parents' perceptions of ideal adult lives for their children with significant cognitive challenges. Additionally, this researcher investigated what role disability played in participants' concepts of ideal adult lives for their children with disabilities. For the purpose of this dissertation, significant cognitive challenge was defined as a person having an IQ below 50 and an expected need of 24 hour a day care during adulthood. Six participants were chosen. Each participant received a copy of the interview protocol before the interviews. Each parent participated in two face-to-face interviews and one follow up telephone …

N-Glycan Structures Of Human Transferrin Produced By Lymantria Dispar (Gypsy Moth) Cells Using The Ldmnpv Expression System, One Choi, Noboru Tomiya, Jung H. Kim, James M. Slavicek, Michael J. Betenbaugh, Yuan C. Lee

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

N-glycan structures of recombinant human serum transferrin (hTf) expressed by Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth) 652Y cells were determined. The gene encoding hTf was incorporated into a Lymantria dispar nucleopolyhedrovirus (LdMNPV) under the control of the polyhedrin promoter. This virus was then used to infect Ld652Y cells, and the recombinant protein was harvested at 120 h postinfection. N-glycans were released from the purified recombinant human serum transferrin and derivatized with 2-aminopyridine; the glycan structures were analyzed by a two-dimensional HPLC and MALDI-TOF MS. Structures of 11 glycans (88.8% of total N-glycans) were elucidated. The glycan analysis revealed that …

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The relation between satellite measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), cumulated over the growing season, and inventory estimates of forest woody biomass carbon is estimated statistically with data from 167 provinces and states in six countries (Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia and the USA for a single time period and Sweden for two periods). Statistical tests indicate that the regression model can be used to represent the relation between forest biomass and NDVI across spatial, temporal and ecological scales for relatively long time scales. For the 1.42 billion ha of boreal and temperate forests in the Northern Hemisphere, the …
