African American Women At Midlife: The Relationship Between Spirituality And Life Satisfaction, Saundra Starks, Aaron W. Hughey
African American Women At Midlife: The Relationship Between Spirituality And Life Satisfaction, Saundra Starks, Aaron W. Hughey
Counseling & Student Affairs Faculty Publications
In order to examine the potential relationship between life satisfaction, spirituality and other demographic variables, 147 African American women from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan and Missouri were asked to complete the Adult Life Satisfaction Scale (ALSS) and the Black Women=s Spirituality/Religiosity Measure (BWSRM). In-depth interviews were also conducted with six African American women. Data obtained were subjected to correlated groups t test, Pearson r=s and regression analysis; content analysis was used to analyze the interview data. Although no significant difference was found among the ratings of life satisfaction and spirituality with respect to age or education level, the African …

Preliminary Investigations Of Seasonal Changes In The Geochemical Evolution Of The Logdson River, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, Chris Groves, Darlene M. Anthony, Joe Meiman
Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications
Many geochemical studies have been made of karst waters worldwide. Most data that provide the framework for our current understanding of the evolution of karst waters have come from sampling at discrete times and locations, such as springs or wells. Relatively few studies have been made of the geochemical evolution of groundwater as it moves through an open flow system. This paper addresses the seasonal changes in the geochemistry of the Logsdon River conduit as it passes through nearly 10km of the carbonate aquifer of south-central Kentucky . The most important control on the ability of groundwaters to dissolve limestone …

Social Learning And Stage Development Applied To Resistance To Treatment: Probation Youth In A Residential Treatment Facility, Linda Joy Bankowski
Social Learning And Stage Development Applied To Resistance To Treatment: Probation Youth In A Residential Treatment Facility, Linda Joy Bankowski
Theses Digitization Project
The present study focused on male incarcerated youth, ages ranging from twelve to eighteen, in a twenty-four hour care treatment facility. The study attempted to determine what historical factors such as types of crimes committed, length of criminal history, and gang involvement are behavioral indicators of the type of youth who resist treatment. For the study, run away behavior indicated the youth was resistant to treatment.

Effectiveness Of Parent Education Classes: Phenomenological Approach, Lavonna Lucille Downing
Effectiveness Of Parent Education Classes: Phenomenological Approach, Lavonna Lucille Downing
Theses Digitization Project
The effectiveness of most parent education classed is measured by changes in the child. While all programs are developed from psychological theory, and have been evaluated by research, SES and cultural aspects of the undividual have been given little attention. Since public law has recognized the incidence of child abuse and neglect, large numbers of families are required to attend parent education classes. At the same time, research indicates no particular program is more effective than another.

The Impact Of Stressful Life Events And Exposure To Community Violence On Delinquency In Hispanic Pre-Adolescents, Nadine Valerie Perez Zamora
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of the current study was to examine delinquent pre-adolecents. It was hypothesized that both predictor variable [exposure to community violence (number of events; preception of events) and stressful life events (number of events)] would impact delinquent behavior (violent thoughts, violent behaviors, and promiscuity).
The Importance Of Teacher Quality As A Key Determinant Of Students’ Experiences And Outcomes Of Schooling, Ken Rowe
2003 - Building Teacher Quality: What does the research tell us?
Much of the traditional and prevailing dogmas surrounding factors affecting students' experiences and outcomes of schooling throughout their primary and secondary years - especially socio-cultural and socio-economic factors - are now understood to be products of methodological and statistical artefact, and amount to little more than religious adherence to the moribund ideologies of biological and social determinism. In this paper, key findings are presented highlighting real effects from recent and emerging local and international research on educational effectiveness. For example, whereas students' literacy skills, general academic achievements, attitudes, behaviours and experiences of schooling are influenced by the background and intake …
Gnostic Dilemmas In Western Psychologies Of Spirituality1, Harry T. Hunt
Gnostic Dilemmas In Western Psychologies Of Spirituality1, Harry T. Hunt
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Early Gnosticism is identified as a form of Weber’s inner-worldly mysticism that, following the
critique of Plotinus, entailed spiritual metapathologies of inflated grandiosity, despair, and/or
social withdrawal. These vulnerabilities re-emerge in the naturalistic psychologies of spirituality
begun by Emerson, Nietzsche, Jung, and Maslow and more implicitly within contemporary personality
and neuropsychological research on numinous/transpersonal experience. An updated
version of Gnostic dilemma and its conflicted dualism may be endemic to any would-be science
of the spiritual and to much current transpersonal psychology as well.

Never Settle, Keep Exploring : A Reflective Essay, Brenton D. Shavers
Graduate Research Papers
I taught 3rd and 4th grades in an urban area in St. Paul, MN. This was an eye opening experience for someone right out of college. I was one of two African American teachers and one of only three males in the building. A principal, entering the building for her 1st time as their new leader, placed me into a leadership position immediately.I found myself spending countless hours in activities outside of school, in support of my students. It became increasingly evident that these supports needed to be in place for both students and their families in order for the …

Seafloor Segmentation Based On Bathymetric Measurements From Multibeam Echosounders Data, Yuri Rzhanov, Randy G. Cutter Jr., Larry A. Mayer
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Bathymetric data depicts the geomorphology of the seabottom and allows characterization of spatial distributions of apparent benthic habitats. The variability of seafloor topography can be defined as a texture. This prompts for the application of well developed image processing techniques for automatic delineation of regions with clucially different physiographic characteristics. In the present paper histograms of biologically motivated invariant image attributes are used for characterization of local geomorphological feahires. This technique can be naturally applied in a range of spatial scales. Local feature vectors are then submitted to a procedure which divides the set into a number of clusters each …

Early Upper Paleolithic Ornaments From Üçaǧizli Cave, Turkey, Mary C. Stiner, Steven L. Kuhn
Early Upper Paleolithic Ornaments From Üçaǧizli Cave, Turkey, Mary C. Stiner, Steven L. Kuhn
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Beads and similar ornaments appear early in the archaeological record associated with modern humans (Homo sapiens), first in Africa and somewhat later in Eurasia. They are thought to be among the first indicators of human use of symbols. This paper discusses criteria used to distinguish early mollusk-shell beads from other kinds of shells in archaeological deposits, focusing on evidence from the site of Üçaǧizli Cave in Turkey. Upper Paleolithic beadmakers at this and other sites clearly preferred certain forms of shell for ornamental purposes, although the reasons for that selectivity remain obscure.

The period of maternal dependence is a time during which mammalian infants must optimise both their growth and the development of behavioural skills in order to successfully meet the demands of independent living. The rate and duration of maternal provisioning, post-weaning food availability and climatic conditions are all factors likely to influence the growth strategies of infants. While numerous studies have documented differences in growth strategies at high taxonomic levels, few have investigated those of closely related species inhabiting similar environments. The present study examined the body composition, metabolism and indices of physiological development in pups of Antarctic fur seals …

A Long-Term Database For Plankton Populations And Nutrient Levels In Prairie Lakes, Lois Haertel
Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications
A database for prairie lake phytoplankton populations, zooplankton populations, physical variables and chemical variables is presented. Samples are taken from two time periods, 1970-1979 and 1988-1997. Six lakes, Pickerel, Enemy Swim, Cochrane, Hendricks, Oak and Bitter were sampled during both time periods. Bluedog lake was sampled only in the earlier time period and Roy, East Oakwood, Tetonkaha, Round, and South Buffalo lakes were only sampled in the later time period. Water transparency and population numbers of copepods and cladocerans declined in five of the six lakes sampled in both time periods. Chlorophyll a concentrations and Trophic State Index increased in …
Insect-Habitat Relationships In Intermittent Streams Of Eastern South Dakota, Paul B. Lorenzen, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr.
Insect-Habitat Relationships In Intermittent Streams Of Eastern South Dakota, Paul B. Lorenzen, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr.
Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications
Relationships between habitat and invertebrate community structure are an important aspect of bioassessment. Little effort has been made to address these relationships in intermittent streams. The objective of this effort was to examine relationships between habitat and insect community metrics in intermittent streams in Eastern South Dakota. Habitat parameters were measured at 21 sites August 2001 and April, June and August 2002. Aquatic insect samples were collected from all sites, August through October 2001 and April through September 2002. Spearman rank correlation analysis was performed on mean site values (n=21) for habitat and insect community metrics. Only significant correlations (p<0.05) are reported here. Several invertebrate metrics were positively correlated with substrate, bank, and flow measurements. Percent Chironomidae and sprawlers were associated with percent unstable substrate (rho = 0.41 and 0.45, respectively) while percent Ephemeroptera plus Trichoptera were positively associated with fine gravel (rho = 0.47). Numbers of filterers were associated with greater bank erosion, undercut banks and stream flow (rho = 0.42, 0.60 and 0.90, respectively). In contrast, percent Diptera and Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera richness were negatively associated with emergent vegetation (rho = -0.46 to -0.50) and percent predators were negatively associated with stream flow and percent bank erosion (rho = -0.58, -0.73, respectively). These results demonstrate strong relationships between insect community composition, richness and guild metrics and habitat characteristics which may facilitate bioassessment of intermittent streams in Eastern South Dakota.

Progress And Opportunities In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Health Communications, Laurie A. Drabble, J. Keatley, G. Marcelle
Faculty Publications
This article describes elements of effective health communication and highlights strategies that may best be adopted or adapted in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. Studies have documented the utility of multidimensional approaches to health communication from the macro level of interventions targeting entire populations to the micro level of communication between health care provider and consumer. Although evidence of health disparities in LGBT communities underscores the importance of population-specific interventions, health promotion campaigns rarely target these populations and health communication activities seldom account for the diversity of LGBT communities. Advances in health communication suggest promising direction …
