The Bipartisan Patient Protection Act: Greater Liability On Managed Care Plans, Urura W. Mayers
The Bipartisan Patient Protection Act: Greater Liability On Managed Care Plans, Urura W. Mayers
Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences
Mrs. Mayers' article notes the substantial differences that exist between the Senate and the House of Representatives' version of the Bipartisan Patient Protection Act of 2001. While observing the remedies made available to participants, beneficiaries, or enrollees under both bills, she shows that the Senate bill places greater liability on managed care plans because it favors consumer protection, while the House of Representatives' bill does not. In order to develop an understanding of why an act of this nature is needed, Mrs. Mayers provides a brief historical overview of how managed care entities developed. She also examines the Employee Retirement …

New Illinois Butterfly Records For Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, And Edgar Counties, Paul Switzer, Jared A. Switzer, Isaac C. Switzer
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
The butterfly (Lepidoptera) fauna of east-central Illinois is largely undocumented. We collected butterflies and examined specimens in the Insect Museum at Eastern Illinois University for unpublished records for five counties in east-central Illinois. Here we report 105 new butterfly county records: 17 for Clark County, 30 for Coles County, 28 for Cumberland County, 9 for Douglas County, and 21 for Edgar County. We also describe behavioral observations, in particular those behaviors related to reproduction, for some of the records. Of special note were two rare vagrants from Coles County found in the museum collection, the orange-barred sulphur (Phoebis philea) and …

Genes Of The Gadx-Gadw Regulon In Escherichia Coli, Don L. Tucker, Nancy Tucker, Zhuo Ma, John W. Foster, Regina L. Miranda, Paul S. Cohen, Tyrrell Conway
Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)
Acid in the stomach is thought to be a barrier to bacterial colonization of the intestine. Escherichia coli, however, has three systems for acid resistance, which overcome this barrier. The most effective of these systems is dependent on transport and decarboxylation of glutamate. GadX regulates two genes that encode isoforms of glutamate decarboxylase critical to this system, but additional genes associated with the glutamate-dependent acid resistance system remained to be identified. The gadX gene and a second downstream araC-like transcription factor gene, gadW, were mutated separately and in combination, and the gene expression profiles of the mutants …

Examination Of Estimated 24 Hour Period Of Dendritic Cell Maturation, Sarah Reeves
Examination Of Estimated 24 Hour Period Of Dendritic Cell Maturation, Sarah Reeves
Capstone Research Projects
Dendritic cells (DCs) are responsible for antigen uptake, presentation, and stimulation of T cells responsible for recognizing these antigens. During the immature stage DCs endocytose fluids and particles from the surrounding interstitial environment, such as the skin, deeper organs, and mucous membranes. Maturity is reached after antigen uptake stimulates the loading of foreign peptides on their major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC II) molecules, which then are expressed on the cell surface. DCs cease antigen uptake and presentation at some point after the uptake of a maturation stimulus (antigen); at this point the DC is fully mature. It has been …

Effects Of Cognitive Behavioral Treatment On Physical Health Status In Patients With Panic Disorder, Norman B. Schmidt, Beth T. Mccreary, John J. Trakowski, Helen T. Santiago, Kelly Woolaway-Bickel, Nicholas Ialongo
Effects Of Cognitive Behavioral Treatment On Physical Health Status In Patients With Panic Disorder, Norman B. Schmidt, Beth T. Mccreary, John J. Trakowski, Helen T. Santiago, Kelly Woolaway-Bickel, Nicholas Ialongo
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
The relationship between panic disorder and nonpsychiatric medical illness is complex, but some evidence suggests that panic disorder increases risk for a variety of nonpsychiatric medical conditions. Given the demonstrated efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder, we were interested in evaluating the effects of CBT for panic disorder on nonpsychiatric medical symptoms among these patients. Patients were randomized to a 12-week group-administered CBT protocol (n = 22) or a delayedtreatment conlrol (n = 24). Treated patients showed marked improvement in both anxiety symptoms and physical health symptom ratings that were evident at midtreatment and were …
Commentary: The Parameter-Free Track Structure Model Of Scholz And Kraft For Heavy-Ion Cross Sections, Robert Katz
Commentary: The Parameter-Free Track Structure Model Of Scholz And Kraft For Heavy-Ion Cross Sections, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
The "parameter-free", "local effects" theory of Scholz and Kraft is an extension to mammalian cells of the theory of RBE for dry enzymes and viruses of Butts and Katz. Its claim for parameter freedom has been challenged elsewhere. Here we examine its conceptual base and find errors in its use of the physical concept of cross section and its neglect of the radiobiological relationship between target size and radio-sensitivity in evaluating the radiation damage to "point targets".
Sensory Integration Dysfunction In Urban Head Start Populations: Why Children Have This Disorder And What Teachers Can Do About It, Helen Frazier
Sensory Integration Dysfunction In Urban Head Start Populations: Why Children Have This Disorder And What Teachers Can Do About It, Helen Frazier
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This paper addresses the environmental causes of and treatment for sensory integration disorder among children living in urban poverty. Established and current research is examined in order to provide a foundation for the practical aspects of this paper. This paper presents a general description of a Head Start program designed to support sensory integration and includes specific activities that support the tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular sensory systems. It concludes that, as a result of pre- and post-natal environmental factors that interfere with effective sensory integration, many Head Start children are not yet ready to learn to read.

An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Management: Using Individual Behaviour To Predict The Indirect Effects Of Antarctic Krill Fisheries On Penguin Foraging, Suzanne H. Alonzo, Paul Switzer, Marc Mangel
An Ecosystem-Based Approach To Management: Using Individual Behaviour To Predict The Indirect Effects Of Antarctic Krill Fisheries On Penguin Foraging, Suzanne H. Alonzo, Paul Switzer, Marc Mangel
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
Summary 1. Changes in species' abundance and distributions caused by human disturbances can have indirect effects on other species in a community. Although ecosystem approaches to management are becoming increasingly prevalent, they require a fuller understand- ing of how individual behaviour determines interactions within and between species. 2. Ecological interactions involving krill are of major importance to many species within the Antarctic. Despite extensive knowledge of the ecosystem that they occupy, there is still incomplete understanding of the links between species and the effect of environmental conditions on these interactions. In this study, we extended a behavioural model used previously …
Effects Of Experience And Body Size On Refuge Choice In The Crayfish Orconectes Immunis, Patrick S. Forsythe, Deborah S. Wyatt, Paul V. Switzer
Effects Of Experience And Body Size On Refuge Choice In The Crayfish Orconectes Immunis, Patrick S. Forsythe, Deborah S. Wyatt, Paul V. Switzer
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
We investigated whether refuge size or experience with a refuge affected the refuge use of male Orconectes immunis crayfish. Individuals were given choices among seven refuges for 10 consecutive days. Refuges were formed from equal length but different diameter PVC pipe and placed in an array in a random sequence. Three treatments were used. In the Novel Refuge treatment, individuals were placed in a new test arena with a new arrangement of cleaned refuges every day. In the Nonremoval treatment, individuals were left in the same arena with the same set of refuges each day. In the Removal treatment, individuals …
