The Biology Of The Broadcast Flag, Susan P. Crawford Jan 2003

The Biology Of The Broadcast Flag, Susan P. Crawford

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and its content affiliates would like all consumer electronics and information technology companies to innovate "according to the rules." The arguments made by the MPAA and its content colleagues in support of national (and, eventually, global) control over the functionality of the devices that manipulate content are fundamentally troubling for the future of innovation and the future of law itself. But the content industry has hit on a very important way of thinking about law. We should pay attention to the evolutionary ecosystem of the law as the background medium in which innovation …

Alteration Of Pulmonary Immunity To Listeria Monocytogenes By Diesel Exhaust Particles (Deps). Ii. Effects Of Deps On T-Cell-Mediated Immune Responses In Rats., Xue-Jun Yin, Rosana Schafer, Jane Y C Ma, James M. Antonini, Jenny R. Roberts, David N. Weissman, Paul D. Siegel, Joseph K H Ma Jan 2003

Alteration Of Pulmonary Immunity To Listeria Monocytogenes By Diesel Exhaust Particles (Deps). Ii. Effects Of Deps On T-Cell-Mediated Immune Responses In Rats., Xue-Jun Yin, Rosana Schafer, Jane Y C Ma, James M. Antonini, Jenny R. Roberts, David N. Weissman, Paul D. Siegel, Joseph K H Ma

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Previously, we showed that diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) suppressed pulmonary clearance of Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) and inhibited the phagocytosis of alveolar macrophages and their response to Listeria in the secretion of interleukin (IL)-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and IL-12. In this report we examined the effects of DEPs and/or Listeria on T-cell development and secretion of IL-2, IL-6, and interferon (IFN)-gamma. We exposed Brown Norway rats to clean air or DEPs at 50 or 100 mg/m3 for 4 hr by nose-only inhalation and inoculated with 100,000 Listeria. Lymphocytes in the lung-draining lymph nodes were isolated at 3 and 7 …

Alteration Of Pulmonary Immunity To Listeria Monocytogenes By Diesel Exhaust Particles (Deps). I. Effects Of Deps On Early Pulmonary Response, Xue-Jun Yin, Rosana Schafer, Jane Y C Ma, James M. Antonini, David D. Weissman, Paul D. Siegel, Mark W. Barger, Jenny R. Roberts, Joseph K-H Ma Jan 2003

Alteration Of Pulmonary Immunity To Listeria Monocytogenes By Diesel Exhaust Particles (Deps). I. Effects Of Deps On Early Pulmonary Response, Xue-Jun Yin, Rosana Schafer, Jane Y C Ma, James M. Antonini, David D. Weissman, Paul D. Siegel, Mark W. Barger, Jenny R. Roberts, Joseph K-H Ma

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

It has been hypothesized that diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) aggravate pulmonary bacterial infection by both innate and cell-mediated immune mechanisms. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the effects of DEP exposure on the functions of alveolar macrophages (AMs) and lymphocytes from lung-draining lymph nodes using a rat Listeria monocytogenes infection model. In the present study, we focused on the effects of DEP exposure on AM functions, including phagocytic activity and secretion of proinflammatory cytokines. The Listeria infection model was characterized by an increase in neutrophil count, albumin content, and acellular lactate dehydrogenase activity in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid at …

Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter Family Members From Leishmania Donovani Are Electrogenic Proton Symporters, Alex Stein, Gayatri Vaseduvan, Nicola S. Carter, Buddy Ullman, Scott M. Landfear, Michael Kavanaugh Jan 2003

Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter Family Members From Leishmania Donovani Are Electrogenic Proton Symporters, Alex Stein, Gayatri Vaseduvan, Nicola S. Carter, Buddy Ullman, Scott M. Landfear, Michael Kavanaugh

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Leishmania donovani express two members of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family; LdNT1 encoded by two closely related and linked genes, LdNT1.1 and LdNT1.2, that transport adenosine and pyrimidine nucleosides and LdNT2 that transports inosine and guanosine exclusively. LdNT1.1, LdNT1.2, and LdNT2 have been expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes and found to be electrogenic in the presence of nucleoside ligands for which they mediate transport. Further analysis revealed that ligand uptake and transport currents through LdNT1-type transporters are proton-dependent. In addition to the flux of protons that is coupled to the transport reaction, LdNT1 transporters mediate a variable constitutive proton …

Conservation And Restoration Of Pine Forest Genetic Resources In México, C. Sáenz-Romero, Amy E. Snively, R. Lindig-Cisneros Jan 2003

Conservation And Restoration Of Pine Forest Genetic Resources In México, C. Sáenz-Romero, Amy E. Snively, R. Lindig-Cisneros

Student Published Works

Deforestation rates in México are about 670,000 ha/year. This threatens the richness of forest genetic resources in México, causing the disappearance of locally adapted populations and rare and endangered pine species. México is one of the six megadiverse countries in the world, with half of the world’s Pinus species. Pinus is one of the most economically and ecologically important forest genera in México. We suggest that delineation of seed zones and the establishment of a network of Forest Genetic Resource Conservation Units (FGRCUs), linked with forest management and ecological restoration programs will protect this valuable resource. We estimate that FGRCUs …

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris Jan 2003

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris

Conference Papers

The paper investigates the various narrative and cinematographic strategies employed in Pasolini's 'The Gospel According to St Matthew' (1964), Tarkovsy's 'Andrei Rublev' (1966) and Kieslowski's 'A Short Film about Love' (1988) to correct and undermine a decentred representation which is structured around power-informed centre-periphery relations. It discusses the issue of assumed centrality and modern alienation through instrumentalised, detached perception.

Documenting The Experience Of Participating In A Regionalization Effort To Control Stormwater Pollution In Southern Maine: A Qualitative Study Of The Casco Bay Interlocal Stormwater Working Group, Brenda M. Zollitsch

Publications

The Casco Bay Interlocal Stormwater Working Group is being held up as that model for regionalization efforts by officials outside the group. This study addresses two hypotheses: 1) Members of the ISWG believe that their participation on the ISWG has been beneficial to them and 2) Better understanding of the overall experience of being a member of the ISWG can provide insight into what makes regionalization efforts in Maine successful. The study used indepth interviews, observation and historical information data collection techniques. Study findings indicate that the experience of being a municipal member on the ISWG board has been seen …
