Ciliated Protozoan Colonization Of Substrates From Weeks Bay, Alabama, Stephen C. Landers, Scott W. Phipps Jan 2003

Ciliated Protozoan Colonization Of Substrates From Weeks Bay, Alabama, Stephen C. Landers, Scott W. Phipps

Gulf of Mexico Science

Ciliated protozoan colonization of artificial substrates was examined during a 12-mo period from Jan. to Dec. 2001 in Weeks Bay, Alabama. Artificial substrates (glass slides) were suspended in the water at three locations in the Bay for a period of I wk/mo, and the population density of the stalked peritrich Vorticella was determined. Environmental data collected during the colonization period were compared with the population results. There was a positive correlation between colonization and water temperature at two sites and between phosphate and colonization at one site. Additionally, a negative correlation was determined between colonization and dissolved oxygen at two …

Distribution, Habitat Partitioning, And Abundance Of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, And Loggerhead Sea Turtles On The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico Continental Shelf, Robert B. Griffin, Nancy J. Griffin Jan 2003

Distribution, Habitat Partitioning, And Abundance Of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, And Loggerhead Sea Turtles On The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico Continental Shelf, Robert B. Griffin, Nancy J. Griffin

Gulf of Mexico Science

We surveyed cetaceans and marine turtles from Nov. 1998 to Nov. 2000 along a series of prescribed transects between Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor, Florida, and between the coast and the 180-m isobath. Vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll concentration were collected at 65 stations, and continuous surface data on these variables and transmittance were collected while underway. Habitat partitioning among Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), and loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) was examined by canonical correspondence analyses of environmental characteristics at sighting locations. Environmental characteristics and primary productivity …

Evidence That Ultraviolet Radiation May Depress Short-Term Photosynthetic Rates Of Intertidal Ulva Lactuca And Consumption By A Generalist Feeder (Clibanarius Vittatus), Julien Lartigue, Frank M. Fontanella, Just Cebrian, Stanislaus Arbaczauskas Jan 2003

Evidence That Ultraviolet Radiation May Depress Short-Term Photosynthetic Rates Of Intertidal Ulva Lactuca And Consumption By A Generalist Feeder (Clibanarius Vittatus), Julien Lartigue, Frank M. Fontanella, Just Cebrian, Stanislaus Arbaczauskas

Gulf of Mexico Science

This article considers the impact of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the photosynthesis and consumption of intertidal Ulva lactuca, an important producer and food resource in many coastal ecosystems. Algal fragments were exposed in the laboratory to either UVR and PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) simultaneously or PAR alone. The rates of photosynthesis and consumption by a generalist feeder, the stripped hermit crab (Clibanarius vittatus), were then compared between the two treatments. In both experiments, the biological weighted values for UVR in the laboratory indicate that the experimental set-up provided a level of UVR exposure that would occur in …

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Dredged Sediments Disposed At The Pensacola, Florida, Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site Using Naturally Occurring Gamma Radiation, Roland E. Ferry Jan 2003

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Dredged Sediments Disposed At The Pensacola, Florida, Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site Using Naturally Occurring Gamma Radiation, Roland E. Ferry

Gulf of Mexico Science

The fate and effects of large volumes of dredged sediments disposed at offshore disposal sites are of particular interest to the federal and state agencies responsible for its management. During the period from Jan. to April 1990, 3. 7 million m3 of dredged sediments were disposed of at the Pensacola, FL, Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS). From May 1990 to Oct. 1993, the dispersal of dredged sediments in the area surrounding the disposal site was studied using bathymetry, sediment particle size distribution, and the differential abundance of naturally occurring gamma radiation emitters in dredged sediments and native seafloor …

Movements Of Gulf Sturgeon (Acipenser Oxyrinchus Desotoi) In Nearshore Habitat As Determined By Acoustic Telemetry, Randy E. Edwards, Kenneth J. Sulak, Michael T. Randall, Churchill B. Grimes Jan 2003

Movements Of Gulf Sturgeon (Acipenser Oxyrinchus Desotoi) In Nearshore Habitat As Determined By Acoustic Telemetry, Randy E. Edwards, Kenneth J. Sulak, Michael T. Randall, Churchill B. Grimes

Gulf of Mexico Science

Gulf sturgeon were tagged with telemetry tags and were tracked and relocated in fall and early winter of 1996 and 1998 to determine migration patterns and winter feeding habitats after they emigrated from the Suwannee River, Florida, into the Gulf of Mexico. We hypothesized that their migration would generally follow the drowned Suwannee River channel across the West Florida shelf. Fish left the river in late Oct. or early Nov., about the time river water temperatures fell below 20 C. Tracked and relocated fish moved slowly and remained offshore of Suwannee Sound in nearby shallow (<6 m) marine-estuarine habitats until at least mid or late Dec. The relatively small area (~115km2) within which …

A Comparison Of Macroepifauna Among Vegetated And Unvegetated Habitats In A South Florida Estuary Using A Passive Sampling Gear, Paul J. Rudershausen, James V. Locascio, Lourdes M. Rojas

Gulf of Mexico Science

We compared abundance, richness, diversity, and community structure of macroepifauna among the seagrasses Halodule wrightii, Thalassia testudinum, and Syringodium filiforme, and unvegetated substrate in Tarpon Bay, Caloosahatchee River estuary, Florida. Sampling was conducted using wire-mesh minnow traps deployed over fifty-six 24-h periods from Jan. 1999 to Jan. 2000. A total of 36, 35, 28, and 28 species were identified from Halodule, Thalassia, Syringodium, and unvegetated samples, respectively. The gastropod Nassarius vibex was the most abundant species from Halodule and unvegetated substrate, whereas the pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) was the most abundant species from …

Seasonal And Spatial Variation In Algal Composition And Biomass On The Central Florida Gulf Coast Shelf, Janessa Cobb, John M. Lawrence Jan 2003

Seasonal And Spatial Variation In Algal Composition And Biomass On The Central Florida Gulf Coast Shelf, Janessa Cobb, John M. Lawrence

Gulf of Mexico Science

Information on primary producers is fundamental to the understanding of communities. Little is known about the primary producers of marine communities at intermediate depths on the Florida Gulf Coast shelf. The diversity and biomass of algae and seagrass were studied seasonally at three offshore sites (12- to 18-m depth) and one nearshore site (6-m depth) on the central Florida Gulf Coast shelf. Thirty-eight species of attached and drift macroalgae and one drifting seagrass, Thalassia testudinum, were found. The deepest collection site was the most productive in terms of standing biomass and had much more flora on limestone rubble than …

The Effects Of Season And Proximity To Fringing Mangroves On Seagrass-Associated Fish Communities In Charlotte Harbor, Florida, Gregg R. Poulakis, David A. Blewett, Michael E. Mitchell Jan 2003

The Effects Of Season And Proximity To Fringing Mangroves On Seagrass-Associated Fish Communities In Charlotte Harbor, Florida, Gregg R. Poulakis, David A. Blewett, Michael E. Mitchell

Gulf of Mexico Science

Little has been published on habitat use by fishes in Charlotte Harbor, one of Florida's largest-and still relatively pristine-estuaries. Multivariate analyses of data from 21.3-m-seine samples (1996-2000) were used to examine spatiotemporal patterns of seagrass habitat use by Charlotte Harbor fishes. Two habitats (mangrove-associated seagrass shorelines and offshore seagrass flats) were examined. Throughout the year, the mangrove-seagrass habitat was distinguished by Menidia spp., Mugil gyrans, Eucinostomus harengulus, and Floridichthys carpio, and the offshore seagrass flats habitat was distinguished by Bairdiella chrysoura, Orthopristis chrysoptera, and Cynoscion nebulosus. The dry season (Dec.-May) was distinguished by Lagodon …

Dedicated Section: The Fifth International Seagrass Biology Workshop, 7-11 October 2002, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, Silvia E. Ibarra-Obando

Gulf of Mexico Science

Since 1996, seagrass experts have been meeting biennially to share knowledge of the biology of seagrasses and the animals associated with seagrass meadows. Previous workshops have taken place in Western Australia, Japan, the Philippines, and France. In 2002, the meeting was held in Mexico and four themes were chosen for the sessions: Ecophysiological Processes (Sven Beer, Chair), Plant-Animal Interactions (Kenneth L. HeckJR., Chair), Genetics and Reproductive Biology (Gabriele Procaccini and Michelle Wycott, Co-Chairs), and Changes in Seagrass Beds at the Local and Regional Scale (Fred T. Short, Chair). An additional session on Traditional Knowledge and Wisdom (Sandy Wyllie-Echeverria, Chair) provided …

Settlement Of The Acorn Barnacle Balanus From Mobile Bay And Weeks Bay, Alabama, Stephen C. Landers, Scott W. Phipps Jan 2003

Settlement Of The Acorn Barnacle Balanus From Mobile Bay And Weeks Bay, Alabama, Stephen C. Landers, Scott W. Phipps

Gulf of Mexico Science

Barnacle cyprids and metamorphosed settlers were collected using glass slides as artificial substrates at six sites in the Mobile Bay area. Three sites were located in Weeks Bay, Alabama, where the highest settlement concentration occurred near the entrance to Mobile Bay. Two sites in the north end of Weeks Bay near the Fish River had very reduced settlement. The remaining three locations were on the north shore of Dauphin Island, Alabama. Settlement at Dauphin Island was most abundant at the deeper of two sites at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab boat dock, possibly because the substrates were exposed to less …

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This technical note describes two artificial water catchment (guzzler) construction methods that are used in northern and southern Nevada. In northern Nevada, a standard guzzler unit is constructed, and a site is located in which to install it. In southern Nevada, the slickrock and artificial apron units are tailored to specific sites. Each of these methods includes detailed information on site selection, site preparation, selection and transport of materials and equipment, and step-by-step construction information. The technical note should give prospective builders enough information to construct a guzzler on their own. The note also includes information on construction methods and …

Using Neural Net Technology To Analyze Corporate Restructuring Announcements, Owen P. Hall Jr., Charles J. Mcpeak Jan 2003

Using Neural Net Technology To Analyze Corporate Restructuring Announcements, Owen P. Hall Jr., Charles J. Mcpeak

Journal of International Information Management

It is a rare day when the Wall Street Journal does not include an announcement that a company is taking a restructuring charge. Nowadays it is often assumed that this charge is being taken for the purpose of managing earnings. The problems associated with earnings management are not limited to Wall Street but can be found throughout the world's financial markets. Ongoing developments in artificial intelligence technology hold considerable promise for helping monitor and detect financial fraud and abuse. The objective of this paper is twofold: first, to illustrate how neural nets, a branch of artificial intelligence, can be used …
