Genetic Relationships Between Scrotal Circumference And Female Reproductive Traits, G. Martinez-Valezquez, K. E. Gregory, G. L. Bennett, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 2003

Genetic Relationships Between Scrotal Circumference And Female Reproductive Traits, G. Martinez-Valezquez, K. E. Gregory, G. L. Bennett, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Records for yearling scrotal circumference (SC; n = 7,580), age at puberty in heifers (AP; n = 5,292), age at first calving (AFC; n = 4,835), and pregnancy, calving, or weaning status following the first breeding season (PR1, CR1, or WR1, respectively; n = 7,003) from 12 Bos taurus breeds collected at the Meat Animal Research Center (USDA) between 1978 and 1991 were used to estimate genetic parameters. Age at puberty (AP) was defined as age in days at first detected ovulatory estrus. Pregnancy (calving or weaning) status was scored as one for females conceiving (calving or weaning) given exposure …

Lateral Gene Transfer And Ancient Paralogy Of Operons Containing Redundant Copies Of Tryptophan-Pathway Genes In Xylella Species And In Heterocystous Cyanobacteria, Gary Xie, Carol A. Bonner, Tom Brettin, Raphael Gottardo, Nemat O. Keyhani, Roy A. Jensen Jan 2003

Jensen

Publications and Research

Tryptophan-pathway genes that exist within an apparent operon-like organization were evaluated. A seven-gene cluster in Xylella fastidiosa exhibits a sharply delineated low-GC content. This strongly implicates lateral gene transfer. In contrast, parametric studies and protein tree phylogenies did not support the origination of a gene block in the Anabaena/Nostoc lineage by lateral gene transfer.

Odor Management Information For Livestock Operations, Charles Ullery, Stephen Pohl, Alvaro Garcia, Hans Stein Jan 2003

Odor Management Information For Livestock Operations, Charles Ullery, Stephen Pohl, Alvaro Garcia, Hans Stein

SDSU Extension Special Series

Odor and other air-borne emissions have always been associated with livestock production operations. As these operations become larger and more concentrated, the management of odor and dust emissions to reduce their negative impacts on livestock producers and adjacent land users becomes an important issue. This paper provides basic concepts about the production, measurement, and dispersion of livestock-operation odors.

Self-Study Report Of The Department Of Agricultural Leadership, Education And Communication

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Materials and History

Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication (AgLEC) is a department in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The department was established as a result of a 1992 merger between the departments of Agricultural Education and Agricultural Communication. The mission of the department is to foster human capacity in leadership, education and communication through innovative teaching, research, and outreach. The AgLEC faculty reports to a department head, and are accountable to the respective deans of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR), the Agricultural Research Division (ARD), and the Cooperative Extension Division (CED), depending …

Pichia Pastoris Fermentation With Mixed-Feeds Of Glycerol And Methanol: Growth Kinetics And Production Improvement, Wenhui Zhang, Karen J. Hywood Potter, Bradley A. Plantz, Vicki L. Schlegel, Leonard A. Smith, Michael M. Meagher Jan 2003

Pichia Pastoris Fermentation With Mixed-Feeds Of Glycerol And Methanol: Growth Kinetics And Production Improvement, Wenhui Zhang, Karen J. Hywood Potter, Bradley A. Plantz, Vicki L. Schlegel, Leonard A. Smith, Michael M. Meagher

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Fed-batch fermentation of a methanol utilization plus (Mut+) Pichia pastoris strain typically has a growth phase followed by a production phase (induction phase). In the growth phase glycerol is usually used as carbon for cell growth while in the production phase methanol serves as both inducer and carbon source for recombinant protein expression. Some researchers employed a mixed glycerol-methanol feeding strategy during the induction phase to improve production, but growth kinetics on glycerol and methanol and the interaction between them were not reported. The objective of this paper is to optimize the mixed feeding strategy based on growth kinetic studies …

Ineffectiveness Of Sulfur-Based Odors As Nesting Deterrents Against European Starlings, Randolph J. White, Bradley F. Blackwell Jan 2003

Ineffectiveness Of Sulfur-Based Odors As Nesting Deterrents Against European Starlings, Randolph J. White, Bradley F. Blackwell

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Sulfurous volatiles have been shown to elicit avoidance behavior by snow geese (Cben caerulescens Linnaeus), possibly because of their association with potentially toxic levels of selenium in some plant species. We questioned whether an avoidance response to sulfur and sulfur-based products might be exhibited by other avian species, specifically European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris L) and whether the behavior might extend beyond the feeding context (that is, negatively affecting nesting). The European starling is an omnivorous species with a well-developed olfactory capability and can distinguish between plant volatiles when selecting nest material and, therefore, could possibly detect …

Selecting Differentially Expressed Genes From Microarray Experiments, Margaret S. Pepe, Gary M. Longton, Garnet L. Anderson, Michel Schummer

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

High throughput technologies, such as gene expression arrays and protein mass spectrometry, allow one to simultaneously evaluate thousands of potential biomarkers that distinguish different tissue types. Of particular interest here is cancer versus normal organ tissues. We consider statistical methods to rank genes (or proteins) in regards to differential expression between tissues. Various statistical measures are considered and we argue that two measures related to the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve are particularly suitable for this purpose. We also propose that sampling variability in the gene rankings be quantified and suggest using the “selection probability function”, the probability distribution of rankings …
