Use Of Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy For Stress-Strain Measurements, Ajit K. Roy Feb 2003

Use Of Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy For Stress-Strain Measurements, Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the Idaho State University (ISU) is to evaluate the feasibility of determining residual stresses of welded, bent (three-point-bend), and cold-worked engineering materials using a new nondestructive technique based on positron annihilation spectroscopy. The proposed technique is to use x-rays from a small MeV electron Linac to generate positrons inside the sample via pair production. This method can be used for materials characterization and investigation of defects in thick samples that could not be accomplished by conventional positron technique or other nondestructive methods. The data …

Nutrient Uptake By Seagrass Communities And Associated Organisms: Impact Of Hydrodynamic Regime Quantified Through Field Measurements And Use Of An Isotope Label, Christopher David Cornelisen Feb 2003

Nutrient Uptake By Seagrass Communities And Associated Organisms: Impact Of Hydrodynamic Regime Quantified Through Field Measurements And Use Of An Isotope Label, Christopher David Cornelisen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Seagrass communities are composed of numerous organisms that depend on water-column nutrients for metabolic processes. The rate at which these organisms remove a nutrient from the water column can be controlled by physical factors such as hydrodynamic regime or by biological factors such as speed of enzyme reactions. The impact of hydrodynamic regime on rates of nutrient uptake for seagrass (Thalassia testudinum) communities and for organisms that comprise the community (seagrass, epiphytes, phytoplankton, and microphytobenthos) was quantified in a series of field flume experiments employing the use of 15N-labeled ammonium and nitrate.

Rates of ammonium uptake for …

Activated Epha4 Receptor In Xenopus Laevis Acts Rhrough Src- Like Tyrosine Kinase P59fyn To Inhibit Rhoa Gtpase, Svetlana Grabauskiene Feb 2003

Activated Epha4 Receptor In Xenopus Laevis Acts Rhrough Src- Like Tyrosine Kinase P59fyn To Inhibit Rhoa Gtpase, Svetlana Grabauskiene

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Eph receptors and their ligands, ephrins, have been implicated in many important developmental processes and in tumorigenesis. The activation of EphA4 receptors in the frog, Xenopus laevis, causes loss of cell adhesion, tight junctions, and stress fibers. Previous studies revealed that these receptors achieve their cellular effects at least in part by inhibiting RhoA GTPase. However, what links these GTPases with the EphA4 receptor remained unknown.

In an attempt to investigate involvement of the Src-like tyrosine kinase p59fyn in EphA4 signaling, a series of experiments was planned using the chimeric receptor EPP. The findings presented in this thesis indicate …

Satisficing Applied To Simulated Soccer, Jay Packard Feb 2003

Satisficing Applied To Simulated Soccer, Jay Packard

Theses and Dissertations

Satisficing was introduced by the economist Herbert Simon to allow for decisions that are "good enough" when there are insufficient computational resources and knowledge to obtain the optimal outcome. Autonomous multi-agent systems often require such decision making because of the complexity and unknown factors present in such an environment. Satisficing has been extended significantly by Wynn Stirling. Through extended satisficing, he has departed from conventional approaches to autonomous multi-agent systems, based as they usually are on the assumption that each participant is motivated exclusively by its own self interest, and will therefore attempt to maximize its benefit, regardless of the …
