Deterministic Intracellular Modeling, Jacqueline B. Young Mar 2003

Deterministic Intracellular Modeling, Jacqueline B. Young

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force is interested in the potential side effects at the cellular level from exposure to mission-essential chemicals. Presently, Air Force toxicology studies are conducted to help shed light in identifying potential hazards to workers. However, it takes a considerable amount of money, resources, and time to obtain and analyze experimental results from toxicology studies. The necessity for innovative methods that enable researchers to more effectively generate and analyze data is apparent.

Soft-Sediment Recruitment Dynamics Of Early Blue Crab Stages In Mississippi Sound, Chet F. Rakocinski, Harriet M. Perry, Michael A. Abney, Kristen M. Larsen Mar 2003

Soft-Sediment Recruitment Dynamics Of Early Blue Crab Stages In Mississippi Sound, Chet F. Rakocinski, Harriet M. Perry, Michael A. Abney, Kristen M. Larsen

Faculty Publications

In order to understand the recruitment dynamics of early blue crabs, it is necessary to sample quantitatively across early stages and habitats at appropriate spatio-temporal scales. Few studies of early blue crab recruitment have considered the potential role of soft-sediment habitat or directly related megalopal supply to local densities of early stages. During a 7-wk peak recruitment period, fluctuations in early stages of blue crabs from settlement collectors were significantly cross-correlated between two sites separated by 7.5 km, showing connectivity on this large spatial scale. Moreover, numbers of megalopae from settlement collectors were directly correlated with densities of early juveniles …

Diversity, Aggregation, Leg Mutilation And Mite Infestation Of Costa Rican Phalangida, Opiliones (Arachnida), March 2003, Katherine Ayres

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Phalangida diversity, aggregation composition, leg mutilation and mite infestation were analyzed under a variety of substrates in a pasture and a forest fragment in Cañitas, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Any solitary individual or group of individuals found on or under a substrate were collected and analyzed. For each aggregation, the number of individuals was recorded. Each individual was identified to family and morphospecies. The numbers of missing legs and the leg pair to which they belonged were analyzed for each individual. The number of mites and their locations on the body were also analyzed. Species diversity for each habitat was calculated …

"Are You Beginning To See A Pattern Here?" Family And Medical Discourses Shape The Story Of Black Infant Mortality, Elaine R. Cleeton Mar 2003

"Are You Beginning To See A Pattern Here?" Family And Medical Discourses Shape The Story Of Black Infant Mortality, Elaine R. Cleeton

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Postmodern and poststructuralist theorizations of the interrelations of the particular and the universal have identified women's bodies to be the last frontier for scientific discovery leading to and satisfying the modern compulsion to stabilize and control life from birth to death. This institutional ethnography of one city's response to an elevated infant mortality rate among the babies of African American urban, impoverished women explores their discursive transformation from single mothers who cannot begin prenatal care before the second trimester because too few physicians will treat Medicaid patients, into sexually-immoral, illegaldrug- using women who deliberately harm their babies. The study locates …

No Proof Of Force Needed: Changing Texas Policy Regarding Adolescent Victims Of Intrafamilial Aggravated Sexual Assault., Renee R. Hollander

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

In Texas, the State has to show sexual penetration occurred in order to convict a perpetrator of a first degree felony of aggravated sexual assault when the victim is under fourteen years of age. However, sexual assault victims between the ages of fourteen and sixteen years old must show that serious bodily injury occurred as a result of force in order to get a charge of aggravated sexual assault. As a result, the State can only charge perpetrators who sexually abuse family members between fourteen and sixteen years of age with sexual assault, which carries a lower penalty. This comment …

An Interpretive Exploration Of The Meaning Of Being With Women During Birth For Midwives, Lauren P. Hunter Phd Mar 2003

An Interpretive Exploration Of The Meaning Of Being With Women During Birth For Midwives, Lauren P. Hunter Phd

Dissertations

This study explored the meaning of the phenomenon of the midwife's experience of being present with a woman during childbirth. The value and importance of being with a woman during childbirth, specific and unique to midwifery care, is reflected in midwifery philosophies and models of care. This study looked through the lens of midwives who have written poetry about births they have attended to learn more about the experience of being with a woman. Hermeneutical phenomenology was selected for the philosophical methodology and method because it looked at both the phenomenon and the use of language to describe the phenomenon. …

Justifying Coercion: Nurses' Experiences Medicating Involuntary Psychiatric Patients, Paula K. Vuckovich Phd, Rn Mar 2003

Justifying Coercion: Nurses' Experiences Medicating Involuntary Psychiatric Patients, Paula K. Vuckovich Phd, Rn

Dissertations

This grounded theory study delineates the process inpatient psychiatric nurses use to respond to the challenging nursing problem of medicating resistant involuntary patients. Since approximately one third of all admissions to psychiatric units in the United States are involuntary (Durham, 1996), caring for involuntary patients is a significant part of psychiatric nursing. Medication administration is a major treatment modality that is expected in caring effectively for psychiatric patients (American Psychiatric Association (APA), 1994; APA, 1997; Patel & Hardy, 2001). The process of getting the involuntary patient to accept medication is a major nursing function in a psychiatric unit that treats …

Characterisation Of A Sexual Stage-Specific Gene Encoding Orc1 Homologue In The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Ls Cox Mar 2003

Characterisation Of A Sexual Stage-Specific Gene Encoding Orc1 Homologue In The Human Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum, J-L Li, Ls Cox

School of Biomedical Sciences

The origin recognition complex (ORC) is a multisubunit protein composed of six polypeptides that binds to replication origins and is essential for the initiation of chromosomal DNA replication. Using the Vectorette technique, we have isolated a novel gene encoding an ORC1-like protein from the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The gene has no introns and encodes a protein (PfORC1) of 1189 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular mass of 139 kDa. PfORC1 contains all conserved sequences in the ORC1/Cdc6/Cdc18 family and displays the highest homology to the Schizosaccharomyces pombe ORC1. However, PfORC1 possesses an extensive N-terminal segment with several …

Complete Analysis Of The B‐Cell Response To A Protein Antigen, From In Vivo Germinal Centre Formation To 3‐D Modelling Of Affinity Maturation, Cl Adams, Mkl Macleod, Ej Milner-White, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Somatic hypermutation of immunoglobulin variable region genes occurs within germinal centres (GCs) and is the process responsible for affinity maturation of antibodies during an immune response. Previous studies have focused almost exclusively on the immune response to haptens, which may be unrepresentative of epitopes on protein antigens. In this study, we have exploited a model system that uses transgenic B and CD4+ T cells specific for hen egg lysozyme (HEL) and a chicken ovalbumin peptide, respectively, to investigate a tightly synchronized immune response to protein antigens of widely differing affinities, thus allowing us to track many facets of the development …

What The Universe Means To People Like Me, David D. Allred Mar 2003

What The Universe Means To People Like Me, David D. Allred

Faculty Publications

When I picked up David's paper to read it, I had a pencil in my hand. Years of reading my students' and my own papers made it natural to edit as I read. However, I heard in my mind the voice of my mother advising me to put the pencil down. This wasn't time to edit but to hear and understand. Still, I kept the pencil in my hand for the first few pages and made a few notes before I put it down and just read. I could hear David's voice speaking the words I read. It was good …

Enzymatic Method For Assaying Calcium In Serum With Ca++ -Atpase, Masood-Ul-Hassan Javed, Francesco Michelangeli Feb 2003

Enzymatic Method For Assaying Calcium In Serum With Ca++ -Atpase, Masood-Ul-Hassan Javed, Francesco Michelangeli

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

A kinetic assay for total calcium in serum was developed which is based on the activation of Ca(++)-ATPase by free Ca(++) [Ca(++)](f) maintained by EGTA in the reaction mixture. The concentration of Ca(++)(f) was dependent on total reference calcium added or serum calcium. Ca(++)-ATPase activity was coupled to the reduction of NADH by pyruvate kinase (PK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and monitored by change in absorbance at 340 nm. The calcium in normal serum was 10.08 +/- 0.24 mg/dl (n = 35) by our method while with o-cresolphthalein complexone (CPC) method, the total calcium in the same 35 serum samples …
