Apparatus And Method For Low Flux Photocatalytic Pollution Control (Div), Ali Raissi, Eric Martin, Nazim Muradov

UCF Patents

A new method for design and scale-up of photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes is disclosed. The method is based on optimizing photoprocess energetics by decoupling of the process energy efficiency from the DRE for target contaminants. The technique is applicable to both low and high-flux photoreactor design and scale-up. The low-flux method is based on the implementation of natural biopolymeric and other low-pressure drop media support for titanium dioxide and other band-gap photocatalysts. The high-flux method is based on the implementation of multifunctional metal oxide aerogels and other media in conjunction with a novel rotating fluidized particle bed reactor.

The Mercury System: Exploiting Truly Fast Hardware In Data Mining, Roger D. Chamberlain, Ron K. Cytron, Mark A. Franklin, Ronald S. Indeck

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In many data mining applications, the size of the database is not only extremely large, it is also growing rapidly. Even for relatively simple searches, the time required to move the data off magnetic media, cross the system bus into main memory, copy into processor cache, and then execute code to perform a search is prohibitive. We are building a system in which a significant portion of the data mining task (i.e., the portion that examines the bulk of the raw data) is implemented in fast hardware, close to the magnetic media on which it is stored. Furthermore, this hardware …

Slipping The Interface: Strategies Of Art Making And Lynn Hershman, Jennifer Henderson

SWITCH

This article examines creative approaches to making fine art by slipping and destructing the common boundaries of Modern art with Lynn Hershman Leeson. She is known for her feminist artworks and innovative films that investigates common issues within society and digital media. The author discusses the work’s significance; Leeson’s contribution to feminist art theories and its movement that has transformed the expectations and established interfaces of the art world. In her practice, she explores the surfaces between art and reality; role projection and identity in the 70s, boundaries between human and cyborg in the 80s, polarities of perspectives in the …

Evolution Of Gases And Particles From A Savanna Fire In South Africa, Peter V. Hobbs, Parikhit Sinha, Robert J. Yokelson, Ted J. Christian, Donald R. Blake, Song Gao, Thomas W. Kirschsetter, Tica Novakov, Peter Pilewskie

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

[1] Airborne measurements of particles and gases from a 1000-ha savanna fire in South Africa are presented. These measurements represent the most extensive data set reported on the aging of biomass smoke. The measurements include total concentrations of particles (CN), particle sizes, particulate organic carbon and black carbon, light-scattering coefficients, downwelling UV fluxes, and mixing ratios for 42 trace gases and 7 particulate species. The ratios of excess nitrate, ozone, and gaseous acetic acid to excess CO increased significantly as the smoke aged over ∼40–45 min, indicating that these species were formed by photochemistry in the plume. For 17 other …

Analysis Of Heme Structural Heterogeneity In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Catalase-Peroxidase (Katg), Salem Chouchane, Stefania Girotto, Sofia Kapetanaki, Johannes Schelvis, Shengwei Yu, Richard S. Magliozzo Mar 2003

Analysis Of Heme Structural Heterogeneity In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Catalase-Peroxidase (Katg), Salem Chouchane, Stefania Girotto, Sofia Kapetanaki, Johannes Schelvis, Shengwei Yu, Richard S. Magliozzo

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Mycobacterium tuberculosis catalase-peroxidase (KatG) is a heme enzyme considered important for virulence, which is also responsible for activation of the anti-tuberculosis pro-drug isoniazid. Here, we present an analysis of heterogeneity in KatG heme structure using optical, resonance Raman, and EPR spectroscopy. Examination of ferric KatG under a variety of conditions, including enzyme in the presence of fluoride, chloride, or isoniazid, and at different stages during purification in different buffers allowed for assignment of spectral features to both five- and six-coordinate heme. Five-coordinate heme is suggested to be representative of "native" enzyme, since this species was predominant in the enzyme examined …

Human Acyl-Coenzyme A:Cholesterol Acyltransferase Expressed In Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells: Membrane Topology And Active Site Location, Song Lin, Xiaohui Lu, Catherine C.Y. Chang, Ta-Yuan Chang

Dartmouth Scholarship

Acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) is a membrane-bound enzyme that produces cholesteryl esters intracellularly. Two ACAT genes (ACAT1 and ACAT2) have been identified. The expression of ACAT1 is ubiquitous, whereas that of ACAT2 is tissue restricted. Previous research indicates that ACAT1 may contain seven transmembrane domains (TMDs). To study ACAT2 topology, we inserted two different antigenic tags (hemagglutinin, monoclonal antibody Mab1) at various hydrophilic regions flanking each of its predicted TMDs, and expressed the recombinant proteins in mutant Chinese hamster ovary cells lacking endogenous ACAT. Each tagged ACAT2 was expressed in the endoplasmic reticulum as a single undegraded protein band …
