Intrinsic Markers In Avian Populations: Explorations In Stable Isotopes, Contaminants, And Genetics, Deborah Anne Rocque Apr 2003

Intrinsic Markers In Avian Populations: Explorations In Stable Isotopes, Contaminants, And Genetics, Deborah Anne Rocque

Biological Sciences

This research outlines the diversity of questions that intrinsic markers have the potential to answer and demonstrates some of these marker's limitations and successes. To test the working hypothesis that feathers grown on different continents have significantly different stable isotope ratios in commonly used markers, I analyzed stable isotopes in two generations of feathers from three species of birds that breed at high latitudes and winter on different continents. As expected, significant differences in stable isotope ratios were detected between summer- and winter-grown feathers in both plover species (Pluvialis fulva and P. domininca). However, no differences were found between the …

Women In Alaska Constructing The Recovered Self: A Narrative Approach To Understanding Long -Term Recovery From Alcohol Dependence And /Or Abuse, Jean Alice Richey

Communication

Autobiographical narratives are explored in a qualitative approach regarding women in Alaska who have been successful in long-term recovery from alcohol dependence and/or abuse. The literature review includes an integrative approach to theoretical perspectives from the disciplines of Human Communication, Anthropology, and Psychology. The epistemological orientation of Constructionism grounds this study, as well as provides a framework for theoretical understandings from the narrative co-construction of self-identity, gender studies, health belief and health behavior change models, anthropological views on alcohol and culture including Native American and Alaska Native approaches, and various psychological and transpersonal strategies for overcoming alcohol addiction. Today, a …

Women, Health, And Aging In Yup'ik/Cup'ik Culture, Scarlett Hopkins Hutchison Apr 2003

Women, Health, And Aging In Yup'ik/Cup'ik Culture, Scarlett Hopkins Hutchison

Anthropology

Knowledge of cultural beliefs about health and how they influence life choices and intervention is essential in forming health policy and health promotion programs to meet the growing needs of aging minority populations. This thesis explores cultural beliefs, experiences, and expectations of health and well-being of Yup'ik/Cup'ik women in two rural communities in southwestern Alaska. Interviews were conducted with fifteen women to address two key research questions: (1) how Yup'ik/Cup'ik women define health and well-being; and (2) what environmental, social, and cultural factors contribute to healthy Yup'ik/Cup'ik aging. While many health beliefs and practices appear very different from those current …

Glacial Geology Of The Toolik Lake And Upper Kuparuk River Regions, Thomas D. Hamilton Apr 2003

Glacial Geology Of The Toolik Lake And Upper Kuparuk River Regions, Thomas D. Hamilton

Biological Papers of the University of Alaska

Glaciers of middle and late Pleistocene age flowed into the upper Kuparuk map area from the west, east, and south. Glacial deposits are assigned to the Sagavanirktok River (middle Pleistocene) and Itkillik I and II (late Pleistocene) glaciations of the central Brooks Range glacial succession. During the initial (maximum) advance of Sagavanirktok River age, large valley glaciers flowed north along the Itkillik, Sagavanirktok, and Kuparuk River drainages. Moraines are massive but subdued, with heavy loess cover and broad flanks smoothed by solifluction. A subsequent less extensive advance of Sagavanirktok River age overflowed into the upper Kuparuk drainage from the west …

The Treeline Ecotone In Interior Alaska: From Theory To Planning And The Ecology In Between, Martin Wilmking Apr 2003

The Treeline Ecotone In Interior Alaska: From Theory To Planning And The Ecology In Between, Martin Wilmking

Forest Sciences

Treelines have been the focus of intense research for nearly a hundred years, also because they represent one of the most visible boundaries between two ecological systems. In recent years however, treelines have been studied, because changes in forest ecosystems due to global change, e.g. treeline movement, are expected to manifest first in these areas. This dissertation focuses on the elevational and latitudinal treelines bordering the boreal forest of interior Alaska. After development of a conceptional model of ecotones as three-dimensional spaces between ecosystems, we offer a historical perspective on treeline research and its broader impact in the Brooks Range, …

Longwave Radiative Transfer In The Atmosphere: Model Development And Applications, Jennifer Simmons Delamere Apr 2003

Longwave Radiative Transfer In The Atmosphere: Model Development And Applications, Jennifer Simmons Delamere

Physics

A FLexible Radiative Transfer Tool (FLRTT) has been developed to facilitate the construction of longwave, correlated k-distribution, radiative transfer models. The correlated k-distribution method is a technique which accelerates calculations of radiances, fluxes, and cooling rates in inhomogeneous atmospheres; therefore, correlated k-distribution models are appropriate for simulations of satellite radiances and inclusion into general circulation models. FLRTT was used to build two new rapid radiative transfer models, RRTM_HIRS and RRTM_v3.0, which maintain accuracy comparable to the line-by-line radiative transfer model LBLRTM. Iacono et al. [2003] evaluated upper tropospheric water vapor (UTWV) simulated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community …

Stock Structure And Environmental Effects On Year Class Formation And Population Trends Of Pacific Herring, Clupea Pallasi, In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Evelyn Dale Brown Apr 2003

Stock Structure And Environmental Effects On Year Class Formation And Population Trends Of Pacific Herring, Clupea Pallasi, In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Evelyn Dale Brown

Fisheries

Fluctuating forage fish populations trigger large ecosystem responses in the North Pacific. A representative species, Pacific herring, Clupea pallasi, was chosen to model environmental effects on population fluctuations and recruitment with a case example in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska. A unique approach was used to (1) develop a spatially-explicit, life history-based conceptual stock model, (2) quantify population level effects of climatic trends, and (3) model key environmental factors affecting recruitment. Framed as a simulation model, the stock model was compartmentalized by life-history stages based on shared habitats and environmental forcing. Initial model conditions impacting year-class formation were adult size-at-age, …

Idealized Modeling Of Seasonal Variation In The Alaska Coastal Current, William James Williams Apr 2003

Idealized Modeling Of Seasonal Variation In The Alaska Coastal Current, William James Williams

Marine Biology

Analytical and idealized-numerical models were used to understand the physical processes that govern the seasonal variation and fate of the freshwater in the Alaska Coastal Current (ACC). The ACC is forced by freshwater inflow and by mean easterly winds that cause downwelling over the shelf. Two-dimensional modeling using a line-source buoyant inflow gives the coastal current depth H=32/32 f2Q2g' t2/3 and coastal current width Y2D=31/3g' Qf2 1/3t1/3 , where f is the Coriolis frequency, g ' is reduced gravity, Q is inflow rate and t is …

Assessing The Health Of Harbor Seals In Alaska, Stephen John Trumble Apr 2003

Assessing The Health Of Harbor Seals In Alaska, Stephen John Trumble

Marine Biology

Declining populations of pinnipeds in the Gulf of Alaska, possibly resulting from changes in prey quality, prompted research to determine the population health status of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) using blood chemistry and digestive constraints. Blood chemistry and morphology reference range values between two harbor seal pup populations in Alaska, one population in continued decline, Prince William Sound, and another in recent increase, Tugidak Island, offered clues that blood values can vary on the population scale and that health assessment must utilize an appropriate set of reference values for valid comparisons. Subsequently, a captive study involving harbor seals yielded changes …

Effects Of The Chignik Cooperative: What The Permit Holders Say, Alexandra Hill, Gunnar Knapp Apr 2003

Effects Of The Chignik Cooperative: What The Permit Holders Say, Alexandra Hill, Gunnar Knapp

ISER Reports

The value to fishermen of the 2002 Alaska salmon harvest was $141 million—less than one-third of the $481 million average value of catches in the first half of the 1990s. Many factors contributed to this decline, including not only competition from farmed salmon, but also lower sockeye salmon harvests, changes in consumer demand, and a worldwide economic slowdown. These changes have created discussions throughout the salmon industry—among fishermen, processors, fishery managers, and government officials—about how to restore profitability to the salmon industry. Part of the discussion has been about options for “restructuring” the management of salmon fisheries to lower costs, …

Fire And Successional Trajectories In Boreal Forest: Implications For Response To A Changing Climate, Jill Frances Johnstone Apr 2003

Fire And Successional Trajectories In Boreal Forest: Implications For Response To A Changing Climate, Jill Frances Johnstone

Biological Sciences

Because of the key role played by fire in structuring boreal forest ecosystems, interactions between vegetation and fire regime may be an important and dynamic control of forest response to climate change. This research uses a series of field observations and experiments in boreal forests to examine the nature of several potential fire and vegetation interactions, and how such interactions may influence forest response to climate change. Long-term observations of post-fire succession provide information on the timing of tree establishment and the effects of early establishment on subsequent successional trajectories. The role of competitive interactions in driving patterns of early …

Book Review: Aphodiinae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) Fauna Of New Zealand (Stebnicka, Z. T. 2001), Andrew B. T. Smith

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

This is an excellent faunal survey of the scarab beetle subfamily Aphodiinae of New Zealand. It is obvious that Stebnicka has thoroughly searched the literature and has critically examined many specimens (1,5001) from all the important collections. The monograph includes keys to species and descriptions of all taxa. It also contains detailed information on the systematics, biology, and biogeography of the group as it pertains to New Zealand. There are 20 species dealt with in this volume. Nine species are native endemics, ten are adventive, and one is an interception record (with no evidence of persistent populations occurring). The volume …
