In The Absence Of Democracy: The Designation And Material Support Provisions Of The Anti-Terrorism Laws, Jennifer Van Bergen

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article argues that post-9/11 laws, particularly the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) and the USA PATRIOT Act (USAPA), have dangerously expanded governmental power at the expense of civil liberties. These laws, through provisions like material support for terrorism and the designation of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs), enable prosecutions that often violate due process and First Amendment rights. The article contends that sacrificing civil liberties for national security is both unnecessary and harmful, part of a historical pattern that undermines democracy and the rule of law.

To predict how species establish and disperse within novel communities, the spatial scale at which competition, predation, and habitat interact must be understood. We explored how these factors affect the distribution and abundance of the exotic crayfishes Orconectes rusticus and O. propinquus and the native O. virilis at both the site-specific and whole-lake scales in northern Wisconsin lakes. During summer 1990, we quantified crayfish, fish predators, and fish diets in cobble and macrophyte sites in Trout Lake, comparing resulting patterns to those in 21 lakes surveyed during summer 1987. Prevalence Of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease. A Single Institution Experience, Tariq Y. Khashoggi

OBJECTIVE: To study the incidence and time trends of gestational trophoblastic disease in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). METHODS: A retrospective study of medical records of 64,762 pregnancies registered and treated at Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, KSA, from January 1988 through to December 1998. RESULTS: Fifty-nine cases of hydatidiform mole (36 complete hydatidiform mole (CHM) and 23 partial hydatidiform mole (PHM) and 2 cases of choriocarcinoma were observed, out of 64,762 pregnancies registered at Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, KSA, during an 11 year period. The temporal trends exhibited significant reduction in the incidence of GTD during the study period. …

Isolated Unilateral Pleural Effusion As The Only Manifestation Of The Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome, Abdulaziz S. Aldawood, Afaf A. Felemban

Saudi Medical Journal

Isolated unilateral pleural effusion is uncommon presentation of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome. The pathogenesis of this syndrome involved an increased permeability of the ovarian capillaries and of the mesothelial vessels triggered by the release of vasoactive substances by the ovaries under human chorionic gonadotropin stimulation. Early recognition of this unusual presentation of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome should allow for physicians to ensure a better and minimally invasive management of these potentially pregnant patients.

I. Transition to University Task Force: Purpose and Mission

The Transition to University Task Force was appointed in May 2003 by Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Richard Edwards to review and assess the effectiveness of first-year undergraduate orientation programs and courses. This review was to result in a proposed framework or plan for coordinating and supporting these separate programs.

Most female birds have only a left ovary and associated oviduct. The entry to the oviduct is on the left side of the urodeum of the cloaca. This arrangement may favor males that mount females from the left during copulation if it results in sperm being placed closer to the opening of the oviduct. Therefore, we predicted a left-sided directional bias of cloacal contacts during House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) copulations. Cloacal contacts from the left outnumbered those from the right 74 to 25 (3:1) during 25 bouts of copulation at 11 House Sparrow nests. While this pattern suggests …

This body of work addresses the concept of physical beauty and the attendant value that we as a society place upon it. Beauty shares characteristics with other prized possessions in life. It may be traded for monetary gain, as is the case with professional models. The exchange is not always so obvious. What constitutes beauty is open to many interpretations as to why it is deemed desirable. I have observed physical characteristics which are valued as attractive, change, from one social group to another and within that same society evolve with the passage of time.

It has been proposed that placing a geotextile over sediments with adsorbed contaminants can prevent bioaccumulation of the contaminants in larger animals by isolating the benthic organisms living within these sediments from fish. In conjunction with a field study carried out at Gull Creek, a laboratory study testing two geotextiles as biointrusion barriers and sediment filters was conducted.

Constant-head permeameters were run for seven days using cores from the field study area with a geotextile placed over the cores. For biointrusion barrier tests, medium sand was placed over the geotextile and spiked with nutrients. Following each trial, benthic organisms in …

Hydroxyl free radicals are biologically important molecules in that they attack proteins, lipids and DNA to obtain an electron to fill their outer valence shell. The consequences of such attacks include protein degradation, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage, which leads to many diseases and cancer. While there are many antioxidant assays available to predict anti-radical properties of compounds against different free radicals, the assessment of hydroxyl radical damage has been challenging. This Article discusses the United States' commitment to constitutional governance and the accountability of power and specifically the judiciary's obligation to protect civil liberties from excessive governmental intrusion during times of war. The author begins by describing Chief Justice Rehnquist's 1998 book All the Laws But One: Civil Liberties in Wartime, in which the Chief Justice predicts and suggests that during times of war, courts should bypass judicial principles that traditionally have protected individuals against excessive government intrusion. Thirty-eight papers published in the Journal of Geoscience Education ( JGE) from 1989 through 2003 explicitly use or recommend the use of spreadsheets as part of classroom or field exercises, projects, or entire courses. Many of the papers include the spreadsheets, and some include the equations. The papers demonstrate how spreadsheets allow students to explore a subject through problem-oriented, interactive, and quantitative exercises. We provide an annotated bibliography and classify the 38 JGE papers by spreadsheet use, mathematics skill area, and geologic subdiscipline. The fact that the proopiomelanocortin (POMC) gene is a critical component of energy homeostasis and the stress response, two distinct yet not exclusively separate biological functions, distinguishes this gene as very intriguing and unique for st lllldy. The POMC gene encodes a preprohormone that is post-translationally processed into multiple bioactive peptides. The tissue specific regulation and tissue specific post-translational modifications provide a means for the broad spectrum of the gene's biological activities. Understanding the POMC gene's cell-specific regulation and the physiological functions of its encoded peptides has been an ongoing project of multiple labs spanning the last two decades. Initial …
