Microhabitat Use And Escape Behavior Of Male, Female And Juvenile Norops Oxylophus (Polychrotidae), December 2003, Nathan Dappen
Microhabitat Use And Escape Behavior Of Male, Female And Juvenile Norops Oxylophus (Polychrotidae), December 2003, Nathan Dappen
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The intraspecific distributions of microhabitats in territorial lizard species is determined largely by differing behavior among sexes and age classes. In this project I study a population of Norops oxylophus along the Río Alondra of the San Luis Valley towards the end of the rainy season. I caught individuals, recording their age, sex, size, perch substrate and location, and escape method. I found that adult males prefer to be perched on live tree branches overhanging the water; the larger the individual, the higher he is above the stream. Juveniles are found to inhabit lower areas along the stream banks. Males …
Reproduction Of Besleria Princeps In Monteverde Cloud Forests, December 2003, Michelle Murphy
Reproduction Of Besleria Princeps In Monteverde Cloud Forests, December 2003, Michelle Murphy
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this study was to show the occurrence of asexual versus sexual reproduction in lower premontane cloud forest, on the Atlantic slope and the Pacific slope of the Tilarán Mountain range near the Monteverde Biological Station. Eight hundred plants, 400 on the Atlantic slope and 400 on the Pacific side, were examined at their roots for fragmentation and seeding. The elevations of each slope and a comparison of the two slopes were examined using a chi-squared two-way contingency test. The results showed that asexual reproduction (fragments) is more common in Besleria princeps than sexual reproduction (from seeds). The …

Stomata Densities Of Pleurothallids (Orchidaceae) In Different Microhabitats Of Monteverde, December 2003, Chelsea Beebe
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this study was to test whether there is a difference in the number of open and closed stomata on the northeast and southwest facing sides of trees among seven species of Pleurothallids and one pseudobulb species. Stomata impressions were taken from the leaves using clear finger nail polish and they were then examined under a microscope. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the number of open and closed stomata for every species, always with a higher frequency of closed stomata. Significant affects of species type and position on the tree on stomata density …

Tree Fern (Dicksoniaceae And Cyathaceae) Allelopathy In The Monteverde Cloud Forest, December 2003, Katie Heckendom, Melody Saeman
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this experiment was to look at the effects of Allelopathy between six species of tree ferns in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. We analyzed these effects by comparing plant abundances under the tree ferns to controls. We also compared controls to germination of seeds and spores grown with water or leachate made from the tree fern fronds. We found significantly higher plant abundances in controls than under the tree ferns. Also significantly less seed and spore germination than controls was found. There was not a significant difference between species of tree ferns in their inhibition of plants under …
Vertical Stratification Of Moss-Dwelling Arthropod Communities In The Elfin Forest Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Joe Northrup
Vertical Stratification Of Moss-Dwelling Arthropod Communities In The Elfin Forest Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2003, Joe Northrup
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this study was to determine the community composition, S, H, E, N, and Smarg of arthropods living in epiphytic moss mats on vertical gradients, in the elfin forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. Past studies have shown that moss mats alter biotic factors of the surrounding environment by increasing moisture and decreasing temperature variation. Moss samples were collected from 1 m, 7 m, and 15 m from nine trees between 1725 m and 1800 m and dried using Berlese funnels. Arthropods were separated by order and morphospecies. N was highest at 15 m, Smarg and S were highest …

The Role Of Monocytes In Pristane-Induced Plasmacytoma Escape, Tina L. Sumpter
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Multiples myelomas are untreatable neoplasias in humans, arising from terminally differentiated B cells (plasma cells). The murine pristane-induced plasmacytoma model offers a system for studying the cellular interactions involved in sustaining the growth of plasma cell tumors. In accord with this model, syngenic plasma cell tumors transplanted into the peritoneal cavity of a genetically susceptible mouse are normally cleared by the mouse's immune system. If the mouse is pretreated with pristane (2,6,10,14- tetramethylpentadecane) intraperitoneally, prior to the transplantation of the plasma cell tumor, the tumor thrives, culminating in the death of the mouse. Intraperitoneal administration of pristane results in an …

Sector Differences In Student Learning: Differences In Achievement Gains Across School Years And During The Summer, William Carbonaro
Sector Differences In Student Learning: Differences In Achievement Gains Across School Years And During The Summer, William Carbonaro
Journal of Catholic Education
Public and private schools have been the focus of considerable research, comparing student achievement, attendance, dropout rates, graduation rates, disciplinary incidents, and a variety of educational and prosocial outcomes across sectors. Comparative studies of student achievement have tended to concentrate on the high school years and without any effort to measure gains or losses during specific years. This study concludes that sector differences in learning vary across grade levels and that summer learning rates vary by school sector. More study of sector differences in learning is recommended, especially longitudinal studies that examine seasonal gains across school sector over the entire …

It is well recognized that the agouti/melanocortin system is an important regulator of body weight homeostasis. Given that agouti is expressed in human adipose tissue and that the ectopic expression of agouti in adipose tissue results in moderately obese mice, the link between agouti expression in human adipose tissue and obesity/type 2 diabetes was investigated. Although there was no apparent relationship between agouti mRNA levels and BMI, agouti mRNA levels were significantly elevated in subjects with type 2 diabetes. The regulation of agouti in cultured human adipocytes revealed that insulin did not regulate agouti mRNA, whereas dexamethasone treatment potently increased …

This report describes a Chlamydomonas reinhardtii mutant that lacks Rubisco activase (Rca). Using the BleR (bleomycin resistance) gene as a positive selectable marker for nuclear transformation, an insertional mutagenesis screen was performed to select for cells that required a high-CO2 atmosphere for optimal growth. The DNA flanking the Ble R insert of one of the high-CO2-requiring strains was cloned using thermal asymmetric interlaced-polymerase chain reaction and inverse polymerase chain reaction and sequenced. The flanking sequence matched the C. reinhardtii Rca cDNA sequence previously deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. The loss of a functional Rca in the …

Molecular And Culture-Based Analyses Of Aerobic Carbon Monoxide Oxidizer Diversity, Gary M. King
Faculty Publications
Isolates belonging to six genera not previously known to oxidize CO were obtained from enrichments with aquatic and terrestrial plants. DNA from these and other isolates was used in PCR assays of the gene for the large subunit of carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (coxL). CoxL and putative coxL fragments were amplified from known CO oxidizers (e.g., Oligotropha carboxidovorans and Bradyrhizobium japonicum), from novel CO-oxidizing isolates (e.g., Aminobacter sp. strain COX, Burkholderia sp. strain LUP, Mesorhizobium sp. strain NMB1, Stappia strains M4 and M8, Stenotrophomonas sp. strain LUP, and Xanthobacter sp. strain COX), and from several well-known isolates for which the capacity …
The Role Of Facial Pits In The Thermoregulatory Behavior Of Pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae) Behavioral, Ecological And Phylogenetic Perspectives, Aaron R. Krochmal
The Role Of Facial Pits In The Thermoregulatory Behavior Of Pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae) Behavioral, Ecological And Phylogenetic Perspectives, Aaron R. Krochmal
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pitvipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae) possess unique sensory organs, the facial pits, capable of sensing subtle fluctuations in thermal radiation. Prey acquisition has long been regarded as the sole function of the facial pits. However, the ability to sense thermal radiation could also direct thermoregulatory behavior by remotely sensing nearby surface temperatures. Using a series ofbehavioral arenas of varying spatial complexity and ecological relevance, I surveyed the ability of western diamondback rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) to direct successful thermoregulatory movements with either functional or disabled facial pits. I found that western diamondback rattlesnakes could base thermoregulatory decisions on thermal radiation cues when their …

Effect Of Heavy Metals On Bacteria, Elena Vratonjic
Effect Of Heavy Metals On Bacteria, Elena Vratonjic
Theses and Dissertations
Heavy metals have become devastating environmental contaminants due to their widespread use in the manufacture of electronics, plastics, batteries and dyes. The discharge of heavy metals into the environment has caused concern about their effects on the ecosystem. Many metals are essential for growth in small amounts. However, at higher concentrations heavy metals are toxic because they bind to organic compounds. This accounts for their effects on some important parts of the cell structure, like their ability to denature protein molecules. The initial objective of this study was to find out the growth rate of E.coli and M.roseus in the …

A Molecular Phylogenomic Analysis Of The Ilri-Like Family Of Iaa Amidohydrolase Genes, James Campanella, Daniel Larko, John Smalley
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The ILR1-like family of hydrolase genes was initially isolated in Arabidopsis thaliana and is thought to help regulate levels of free indole-3-acetic-acid. We have investigated how this family has evolved in dicotyledon, monocotyledon and gymnosperm species by employing the GenBank and TIGR databases to retrieve orthologous genes. The relationships among these sequences were assessed employing phylogenomic analyses to examine molecular evolution and phylogeny. The members of the ILR1-like family analysed were ILL1, ILL2, ILL3, ILL6, ILR1. and IAR3. Present evidence suggests that IAR3 has undergone the least evolution and is most conserved. This conclusion is based on IAR3 having the …
Algal Vs. Macrophyte Inputs To Food Webs Of Inland Saline Wetlands, E. Andrew Hart, James R. Lovvorn
Algal Vs. Macrophyte Inputs To Food Webs Of Inland Saline Wetlands, E. Andrew Hart, James R. Lovvorn
Publications
Invertebrate food webs in wetlands were traditionally thought to be fueled mainly by decaying macrophytes, but recently it has been recognized that microalgae may be more important. In particular, the paradigm that shredders of vascular plant litter dominate food web processes may not apply to many wetlands where shredders are rare and microalgae more abundant. This issue is complicated by potential consumption of flocs of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from living plants, and of exopolymer secretions (EPS) from both autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes. In Wyoming, we used gut contents and stable isotopes to investigate organic matter sources for the …

Women participating in Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program workshops were surveyed as to their attitudes, interests, and participation in outdoor recreation activities. The survey, administered to 265 women between October 2002 and June 2003, examined demographic characteristics, motivational factors for participation, similarities and differences between firsttime and returning participants, and their change in recreational behavior after the workshops. The study identified most BOW participants as urban, white, 45 - 50 years of age, highly educated and with a high household income. Most have maintained a long-term relationship, but have no children in the household. The participants had a wide range …
The Potential For Carbon Sequestration In Soils On Lignite Coal Minelands In East Texas, Cynthia Blake
The Potential For Carbon Sequestration In Soils On Lignite Coal Minelands In East Texas, Cynthia Blake
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Global warming is becoming an ever-important topic in the world today. In 1998, it was estimated that 40.5 % of U.S. anthropogenic CO2 emissions was attributed to the combustion of fossil fuels during the generation of electricity (U.S. Department of Energy 2000a). In an attempt to mitigate emissions, electric utility companies have become interested in the potential of forests to sequester large amounts of carbon in their above- and below-ground biomass as well as in the soils. It has been estimated that if the world's deforested lands were reforested and properly managed, they could have the potential to sequester five …
Uptake Of Carbon Monoxide And Hydrogen At Environmentally Relevant Concentrations By Mycobacteria, Gary M. King
Uptake Of Carbon Monoxide And Hydrogen At Environmentally Relevant Concentrations By Mycobacteria, Gary M. King
Faculty Publications
Liquid culture assays revealed a previously unreported capacity for Mycobacterium bovis BCG, M. gordonae, and M. marinum to oxidize CO and for M. smegmatis to consume molecular hydrogen. M. bovis BCG, M. gordonae, M. smegmatis, and M. tuberculosis H37Ra oxidized CO at environmentally relevant concentrations (<50 >ppm); H2 oxidation by M. gordonae and M. smegmatis also occurred at environmentally relevant concentrations (< 10 ppm). CO was not consumed by M. avium or M. microti, although the latter appeared to possess CO dehydrogenase (CODH) genes based on PCR results with primers designed for the CODH large subunit, coxL. M. smegmatis and M. gordonae oxidized CO under suboxic (10 and 1% atmospheric oxygen) and anoxic conditions in the presence of nitrate; no oxidation occurred under anoxic conditions without nitrate. Similar results were obtained for H2 oxidation by M. smegmatis. Phylogenetic analyses of coxL PCR products indicated that mycobacterial sequences form a subclade distinct from that of other bacterial coxL, with limited differentiation among fast- and slow-growing strains.
Dynein’S Binding Ability To Microtubules In Budding Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Gregory Lyle Waltz
Dynein’S Binding Ability To Microtubules In Budding Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Gregory Lyle Waltz
Masters Theses
Cytoplasmic dynein is a minus-end directed microtubule motor that recently has been described as a member of the AAA+ ATPase family. Dyn1p contains four ATP-binding consensus sequences. To understand the role of each ATP-binding site we have begun to systematically mutate the consensus sequence at each ATP-binding site. Thirty-two mutant alleles have been constructed and integrated into the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We have examined each mutant for ability to grow in rich media, to produce binucleate cells at 12°C, ability to grow in the absence of CIN8, and ability of Dyn1p to bind microtubules. Attempts to localize …

19 | The Neolithic Site Of Abu Ghosh, Hamoudi Khalaily, Ofer Marder
IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
Excavations at the Neolithic site of Abu Ghosh in the Jerusalem Hills uncovered two periods: the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) and the Pottery Neolithic (PN). This volume documents the results of the excavations of villages of these two consecutive periods, including architecture, lithics, groundstone, pottery, small finds and fauna. The PPNB village comprised domestic structures, courtyards, plaster floors and enclosing fences. Domestic activities took place in the courtyards. The PN village layout is less clear, as it was dug into the earlier remains. The faunal analysis reveals evidence of incipient domestication of wild goats in the PPNB assemblage, and by …
