The Avifauna Of Bawwab Al-Ghazal: A Zooarchaeological Analysis, Elissa A. Kinzelman Jun 2003

The Avifauna Of Bawwab Al-Ghazal: A Zooarchaeological Analysis, Elissa A. Kinzelman

Masters Theses

In 1998 the Neolithic archaeological site of Bawwab al-Ghazal (ca. 11,500- 7,500 BP) was excavated by a team of researchers from the University of California, Riverside and Whitman College. Among the many artifacts recovered from the site, ranging from stone and shell beads to stone tools and related debitage, were an abundant sample of bird bones. Excavators shipped the sample, consisting of some 407 specimens, to the Anthropology Department of Western Michigan University for a faunal analysis.

This study seeks to illustrate the importance of bird remains in the archaeological record. The avifaunal analysis of Bawwab al-Ghazal began with identifying …

Comment On "Performance Of Different Synchronization Measures In Real Data: A Case Study On Electroencephalographic Signals", R. B. Duckrow, Alfonso M. Albano

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Quian Quiroga [Phys. Rev. E 65, 041903 (2002)] reported a similar performance of several linear and nonlinear measures of synchronization when applied to the rat electrocorticogram (ECoG). However, they found that the mutual information measure did not produce robust estimates of synchronization when compared to other measures. We reexamined their data using a histogram method with adaptive partitioning and found the mutual information to be a useful measure of regional ECoG interdependence.

Evaluating Violence In Slasher Films: Similarity And Social Identification With The Final Girl, Felicia L. Sanders Jun 2003

Evaluating Violence In Slasher Films: Similarity And Social Identification With The Final Girl, Felicia L. Sanders

Masters Theses

Prior research has shown that the media can have an impact on behavior, perception, and gender roles. This study examines violence against women in slasher films through the lenses of similarity theory and social identity theory. Both theories suggest we are attracted to others who are similar to ourselves. In slasher films, the final girl is depicted as a strong character that exemplifies many qualities viewers may see in themselves. Thus, it was hypothesized that as viewers' perceived similarity with the final girl the more they would like her character and the film. Results suggest that viewers perceived similarity the …

The Qualitative Investigation Of The Social Construction Of Female Sexuality Within A Sexualized Work Environment, Christi L. Young Jun 2003

The Qualitative Investigation Of The Social Construction Of Female Sexuality Within A Sexualized Work Environment, Christi L. Young

Masters Theses

This qualitative investigation seeks to identify the sociocultural determinants and psychoemotional ramifications of essentialist gender role socialization on female employees in a sexualized work environment (SWE). Sexualized work environments incorporate work and sexuality and exist on a continuum according to the frequency and intensity of the sexual economic exchange that takes place within them. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten female employees at a comedy club to explore the social construction of female sexuality in such an environment. Subjects commented on the various advantages and disadvantages of working in a SWE as well as on general issues …

The Beautiful And The Common: Inequalities Of Value And Revolving Hierarchy Among The Kayapó, Terence Turner Jun 2003

The Beautiful And The Common: Inequalities Of Value And Revolving Hierarchy Among The Kayapó, Terence Turner

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper addresses the nature of hierarchy in indigenous Amazonian and Central Brazilian societies. It takes as its point of departure an analysis of the production and distribution of social value among the Kayapó, considered as representative of the Gê and similar societies like the Mundurucú, Tapirapé, Karajá, and Bororo. This analysis proceeds from the proposition that “production” in such societies is primarily organized as the process of forming social persons and the values associated with their attributes. It proceeds to show how these values are unequally distributed through an exploitative institutional structure based on matri-uxorilocal residence and the subordination …

Animism, Cannibalism, And Pet-Keeping Among The Guajá Of Eastern Amazonia, Loretta A. Cormier Jun 2003

Animism, Cannibalism, And Pet-Keeping Among The Guajá Of Eastern Amazonia, Loretta A. Cormier

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Recent work in Amazonian religion, sociality, and ecological adaptation have addressed the interrelationships among animism, cannibalism, and pet-keeping.  In this article, I attempt to reconcile these works with the beliefs and behaviors of the Guajá of eastern Amazonia.  I argue that the specific configuration of animism, cannibalism, and pet-keeping among the Guajá relates to their social organization and mode of production as hunter-gatherers.

Obras recentes tratando da religião, socialidade, e adaptação ecológica na Amazonia têm demonstrado as relações entre o animismo, o canibalismo, e a prática de criar animais de estimação.  Neste trabalho, eu tento reconciliar estas obras com as …

Students benefit from this research with a customized curriculum, where they are able to contribute to academia and strengthen their resume. Through my work on the Sophie project, I …

Maquila Employment And Fertility In Mexicali, Mexico: A Study Of The Dynamics Of Productive And Reproductive Relations, Robert Fiala, Susan Tiano Jun 2003

Maquila Employment And Fertility In Mexicali, Mexico: A Study Of The Dynamics Of Productive And Reproductive Relations, Robert Fiala, Susan Tiano

Research Papers

Data on 193 women working in Mexicali, Mexico during a period of rapid expansion of female employment in Mexico's maquila industry in the mid-1980s is used to examine a model of the dynamics of production and reproduction derived from developmental and critical feminist perspectives on gender and development. Analyses confirm most predictions of the model, suggesting the utility of both perspectives. Results indicate that while fertility shapes the type of employment a woman acquires, type of employment has little effect on subsequent fertility. Unanticipated results regarding education point to the importance of considering elements often discussed under the rubric of …

Nonlinear Dynamics Indicates Aging Affects Variability During Gait, Ugo H. Buzzi, Nikolaos Stergiou, Max J. Kurz, Patricia A. Hageman, Jack Heidel

Journal Articles

Objective. To investigate the nature of variability present in time series generated from gait parameters of two different age groups via a nonlinear analysis.

Design. Measures of nonlinear dynamics were used to compare kinematic parameters between elderly and young females.

Background. Aging may lead to changes in motor variability during walking, which may explain the large incidence of falls in the elderly.

Methods. Twenty females, 10 younger (20–37 yr) and 10 older (71–79 yr) walked on a treadmill for 30 consecutive gait cycles. Time series from selected kinematic parameters of the right lower extremity were analyzed using nonlinear dynamics. The …

Service-Learning In Agricultural Instruction: A Guide For Implementing Real-World, Hands-On, Community Based Teaching And Learning, Carol E. O'Neil Jun 2003

Service-Learning In Agricultural Instruction: A Guide For Implementing Real-World, Hands-On, Community Based Teaching And Learning, Carol E. O'Neil

Guides

Service-learning (SL) is defined as "a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility" (Bringle and Hatcher, 1995). The service-learning movement has gained tremendous popularity during the past decade in response to visionaries like Boyer (1990), who called for radical change in higher education toward the "scholarship of engagement," in which universities engage with communities as equal partners for the …

Effects Of Writing Therapy Across Ptsd And Chronic Stress, Jennifer E. Lewis Jun 2003

Effects Of Writing Therapy Across Ptsd And Chronic Stress, Jennifer E. Lewis

Dissertations

Research supports the effectiveness of writing therapy in reducing physical health problems and increasing positive feelings (Pennebaker & Beall, 1986). More recently, research indicates that writing about traumatic experiences is as effective as EMDR in reducing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Largo-Marsh & Spates, 1997). The current study assessed the treatment efficacy of writing therapy for individuals with varying degrees of stress related symptoms. Specifically, this study examined writing treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and work-related chronic stress or "burnout."

The study utilized a pretest-posttest comparison group design. Repeated measurements !)n primary dependent variables were collected at pretest through …
