Killer Whale Predation On Belugas In Cook Inlet, Alaska: Implications For A Depleted Population, Kim Shelden, David J. Rugh, Barbara Mahoney, Marilyn Dahlheim

Killer whale predation on belugas in Cook Inlet, Alaska, has become a concern since the decline of these belugas was documented during the 1990s. Accordingly, killer whale sightings were compiled from systematic surveys, observer databases, and anecdotal accounts. Killer whales have been relatively common in lower Cook Inlet (at least 100 sightings from 1975 to 2002), but in the upper Inlet, north of Kalgin Island, sightings were infrequent (18 in 27 yr), especially prior to the 1990s. Beach cast beluga carcasses with teeth marks and missing flesh also provided evidence of killer whale predation. Most observed killer whale/beluga interactions were …

Fisheries Occasional Publications

A telephone survey of Department of Fisheries' stakeholders was conducted in November 2002 in order to evaluate their perception of the Department's management of commercial and recreational fishing, pearling and aquaculture, and fish and fish habitat protection. The survey also assessed satisfaction with the level of service provided to stakeholders and their involvement in the decision making process.

The sample comprised of 149 interviews - 40 representing the commercial fishing sector, 40 representing the recreational fishing sector, 40 representing fish and fish habitat protection, and 29 representing aquaculture and pearling.

In general, the stakeholders gave positive responses regarding the Department …

The global demographic impact of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic continues to fascinate researchers and scholars. This paper examines the social and demographic effects of this outbreak on Iranian society, through a comprehensive investigation of the modes of transmission and propagation, mortality rates, and other distinctive features of the region, and reveals the importance of taking a country's unique sociopolitical settings into account. Iran was one of the regions hit hardest by the pandemic, with mortality rates significantly higher than in most regions of the world. Males and females differ in academic performance at various points in their education; there are differences in the numbers of young men and women participating in education and training; men and women experience differential success in the labour market. The concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved nitrate-N, Total-N (TN), dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved silicate-Si (DSi) and their ratios in the world's largest rivers are examined using a global data base that includes 37% of the earth's watershed area and half its population. These data were compared to water quality in 42 subbasins of the relatively well-monitored Mississippi River basin (MRB) and of 82 small watersheds of the United States. The average total nitrogen concentration varies over three orders of magnitude among both world river watersheds and the MRB, and is primarily dependent on variations …

This edition of the Wooster Magazine was published in the Summer of 2003. Members of the class of 1953 have donated 9 million dollars to the college for the construction of a new residence hall -- Bornhuetter Hall, names after trustee Ronald L Bornhuetter who donated $5 million. Two long time faculty members, Deborah Hilty and Michael Kern, retired this spring. Six new alums are highlighted for the Independent Study projects. Pages 25 to 58 are dedicated to the Class Notes section. Photos and highlights from Alumni Weekend are on pages 59 and 60.

Hydrogeologic Principles Useful In Predicting The Effects Of Stream Flow Alterations On Shallow Groundwater And Associated Riparian Vegetation, Mark Cable Rains

Geology Faculty Publications

Numerous studies have shown that stream water and shallow groundwater are tightly linked in alluvial settings, and that changes in stream stage are propagated rapidly across alluvial aquifers (Castro and Hornberger 1991, Sophocleous 1991). Thus, many researchers have assumed that stream stages approximate water tables in alluvial aquifers (Auble et al. 1994, Stromberg and Patten 1996). This assumption is valid in some cases but invalid in other cases, particularly in arid basin terrain and more humid mountain terrain. Even when this assumption is valid, this relationship only implies correlation and not causation so the potential effects of stream flow alterations …
