Bone mass is commonly used as an indicator of fracture risk. It has been shown in numerous studies that bone loss causes increased bone fragility and risk of fracture. It has also been shown that 50% of patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures have the same bone mass as normal age matched controls. We compared histomorphological features and molecular expression profiles of adrenocortical adenomas (ACAd) and carcinomas (ACCa). A critical histopathological review (mean, 11 slides per patient) was conducted of 37 ACAd and 67 ACCa. Paraffin-embedded tissue cores of ACAd (n = 33) and ACCa (n = 38) were arrayed in triplicate on tissue microarrays. Expression profiles of p53, mdm-2, p21, Bcl-2, cyclin D1, p27, and Ki-67 were investigated by immunohistochemistry and correlated with histopathology and patient outcome using standard statistical methodology. Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. Surveys indicate that one out of four Americans has high blood pressure. It occurs more often in men than women and is most common in African-American males. Metallothioneins (MT) are a family of low molecular weight (6 kDa) cysteine rich proteins that participate in a variety of functions such as detoxification of heavy metals and homeostasis of essential metals. They can also act as scavengers of free radicals. MT-1 and 2 isoforms are ubiquitously expressed, whereas the expression of the third isoform is limited to the neural tissue. In the PC-3 prostate cancer cell line, MT-3 expression has been shown to inhibit cell growth and increase drug resistance. Fear of pain is an important factor within dental settings. Information is an effective method of enhancing predictability about aversive events during dental and medical procedures and can decrease fear and pain during treatment. Therefore, the effects of fear of dental pain and information type on fear and pain responding during endodontic treatment were examined. Experiment 1 included 268 undergraduate students to develop an informational videotape and a knowledge inventory designed to enhance predictability about root canal treatment and measure dental knowledge across 3 domains (oral hygiene, root canal procedure, and pain during root canal treatment). Mangrove wetlands are efficient in trapping pollutants that may have detrimental effects on mangrove dependent food chains. Mangrove ecosystems that are within urban areas are likely to suffer more from chemical pollution than those in rural areas. Heavy metals in mangrove plant parts, sediments and crabs from mbweni, msimbazi and mtoni mangrove ecosystems in Dar es salaam were analysed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, in order to assess the impact of heavy metal pollution on mangrove biota. Levels Of Pesticide Residues In Water, Soil And Sediments From Southern Lake Victoria And Its Basin, Leonia Henry, Michale A Kishimba

Water, sediment and soil samples collected from Southern Lake Victoria and its basin were analysed for 76 organochlorine, organophosphorous, carbamate and pyrethroid pesticide residues. The samples were collected from sampling stations in nine districts on the Tanzanian side of the lake, namely Mwanza, Sengerema, Geita, Ngudu, Misungwi, Magu, Bunda, Tarime and Musoma Districts. DDT and HCH residues were the only detected pesticides. The concentration of total DDT was up to 1.6 mg/L in water, 600 mg/kg dry mass in sediments and 20 mg/kg dry mass in soil. Has The Seal Of Mulek Been Found?, Jeffrey R. Chadwick

A small stamp seal bearing the inscription belonging to Malkiyahu, son of the king, arguably belonged to Mulek, son of Zedekiah, who accompanied one of the Israelite groups that settled in the New World. Jeremiah 38:6 mentions Malchiah the son of Hammelech, which could also be a reference to this same Mulek. Discussion centers on similar seals, the meaning of Ben Hamelek, the possible age of Malkiyahu, and Book of Mormon claims about Mulek. This seal could conceivably have been left behind in Jerusalem and found centuries later, thus representing an archaeological artifact of a Book of Mormon personality.

Estimation of genetic variances, heritabilities and estimations of response to selection of the cooking time and water absorption traits of Andean gene pool of dry bean seed Phaseolus vulgaris L. were done. General combining ability (GCA) i.e. GCA males and GCA females, and Specific combining ability (SCA) were estimated. The uptake of chromium from fresh water by Eichhornia crassipes was studied under greenhouse conditions where the species was raised in culture solutions containing varying concentrations of chromium (VI) ions. There were positive correlations between the concentration of chromium in the culture media and the amounts of the metal accumulated in the tissues of E. crassipes at any given time. Furthermore, the total accumulated chromium in the tissues of E crassipes increased with increase in the duration for which the plant was exposed to the nutrient solutions containing chromium ions. Calcite deposits, composed of a mixture of calcium carbonate and silicon dioxide, were found in fractures and small cavities within the welded tuff of Yucca Mountain. This research investigation involves determining the presence of thermophilic, calciumprecipitating bacteria within these deposits. The possible existence of thermophilic bacteria may help to resolve the issue of whether these calcite deposits formed from precipitation of dissolved calcium carbonate in rain water transported from the overlying soil environment or as a result of upwelling of geothermally-heated waters transported from below the mountain. A Multicentered Approach To Integrated Qm/Qm Calculations. Applications To Multiply Hydrogen Bonded Systems, Brian W. Hopkins, Gregory S. Tschumper

A multicentered integrated QM/QM technique has been developed. By separating high-level calculations in distinct regions of molecules, the multicentered approach supplants a single large high-level calculation with several smaller calculations. Due to the step polynomial scaling of traditional ab initio quantum chemical methods, this separation significantly enhances the computational efficiency of QM/QM methods. The straightforward implementation of this multicentered approach is illustrated with several large poly-alcohols that form hydrogen bonds with water. The largest alcohol-water complex contains 81 atoms. For properly selected model systems, this multicentered approach introduces essentially no error in the dissociation energies of these complexes relative to …
