Characterization Of Ground Water Discharge To Hampton Harbor, Thomas Ballestero

The project goals were to assess inter-tidal groundwater discharge and concurrent nutrient loading to Hampton Harbor. This will include maps of suspected groundwater discharge zones and measurements of nutrient loading. The principal means of assessment was an aerial survey of the study area during low tide using thermal infrared (TIR) imagery. The TIR imagery was used to detect and locate upwelling groundwater discharge zones within the harbor. The location of groundwater discharge zones as it relates to upgradient land use can be instructive for water quality.

In 1991, after the first Gulf War, the Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq rose up against the Hussein government, with U.S. encouragement. The rebellion failed; in retaliation the government embarked on a massive water diversion project to drain the wetlands. In 1970 the wetlands covered nearly 11,000 square kilometers; today they cover fewer than a thousand. The Marsh Arabs whose ancestors had lived in the wetlands for five thousand years were forced to flee; many died. The drainage of the wetlands was a deliberate and calculated act of genocide and ecocide. At the time, Iraq was a party to several …

The amount, chemical composition, and source of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), together with in situ ultraviolet (UV-B) attenuation, were measured at 1–2 week intervals throughout the summers of 1999, 2000, and 2001 at four sites in Rocky Mountain National Park (Colorado). Eight additional sites, four in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park/John Muir Wilderness (California) and four in Glacier National Park (Montana), were sampled during the summer of 2000. Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM) is believed to lead to an increased susceptibility to infection, or cause impaired immunity. Infection, occurring with malnutrition, is a major cause of morbidity in all age groups and is responsible for two-thirds of all death under 5 yr of age in developing countries. Many cells of the immune system are known to depend for their function on metabolic pathways that employ various nutrients as critical factors. The most consistent changes in immune competence in PEM are in cell-mediated immunity, the bactericidal function of neutrophils, the complement system, the secretory immunoglobin A, and antibody response

Monitoring On Hydrology Condition In Raha Waters Muna Island and Its Relation to Coral Reef Condition. Monitoring on hydrology condition in Raha waters Muna Island, Southeast of Sulawesi were carried out on May and June 2001. The results showed that the temperature vary between 27.80-30.39 oC, salinity between 30.0-32.9 ppt, suspended solid between 70-80 ppm, transparency between see bottom – 8,5 m, nutrient phosphate between 0.13-1.79 mg/l, nitrate between 0.20-2.66 mg/l, dissolved oxygen between 3,68-4.53 ppm, and pH between 7.4-8.2. The values are still good for coralreef growth and development, and still in good agreement with government criteria for miscellaneous …

Isolasi Dan Identifikasi Flavonoid Pada Daun Katu (Sauropus Androgynus (L.) Merr), Sri Harsodjo Wijono

Isolation and Identification of Flavonoid in Katu Leaf (Sauropus androgynus (L.) Merr. Flavonoids in 95% ethanol extract of katu leaf were isolated using Charaux-Paris method. Extract of 95 % ethanol was fractionated with chloroform, ethyl acetate and three times with n-butanol. Flavonoids to be isolated from n-butanol I fraction by chromatography paper preparative method, and identified by spectrophotometer UV (Ultra-Violet) and infrared. Six flavonoids were isolated, one of flavonoids identified as rutin, and the other five were flavonol OH-3 conjugated or flavon groups.

Seasonal influenzed on plankton of the waters around Riau islands. The observation was conducted during April - May 2002. This study was done in relation with observation on environment quality of the waters around Riau Islands. The parameter observed were focus on the plankton communities for tweentyfives points of stations which were grouped into two zone based on the distance of the each station. Plankton abundance varied with location groups from 50- 90 % respectively. Community structure was dominated by the group of diatoms such as Chaetoceros, Dytilum, Nitzschia, Thalassionema, Thalassiothrix and the genus Ceratium (the group of Dinoflagellata). Community …

Discovering complex and meaningful relationships, which we call Semantic Associations, is an important challenge. Just as ranking of documents is a critical component of today's search engines, ranking of relationships will be essential in tomorrow's semantic search engines that would support discovery and mining of the Semantic Web. Building upon our recent work on specifying types of Semantic Associations in RDF graphs, which are possible to create through semantic metadata extraction and annotation, we discuss a framework where ranking techniques can be used to identify more interesting and more relevant Semantic Associations.
