Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Automatic water samplers and a U. S. Geological Survey gauging station were established in 1995 on the main stem of the Illinois River at the Arkansas Highway 59 Bridge. Since that time, continuous stage and discharge measurements and water quality sampling have been used to determine pollutant concentrations and loads in the Arkansas portion of the Illinois River. This report represents the results from the measurement and sampling by the Arkansas Water Resources Center -Water Quality Lab for January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2002.

We present results derived from a wide field, sub-arcminute resolution VLA image of the Galactic Center region at 330 MHz (λ = 90 cm). With a resolution of ∼7″ × 12″ and an rms noise of 1.6 mJy beam⁻¹, this image represents a significant increase in resolution and sensitivity over the previously published VLA image at this frequency (eg. LaRosa et al. 2000). The improvement in sensitivity has significantly increased the census of small diameter sources in the region, resulted in the detection of two new Non-Thermal Filaments (NTFs) and 18 new NTF candidates, and resulted in …

Characterization Of Six Polymorphic Microsatellites For The Polychaete Tubeworm Hydroides Elegans And Cross-Species Amplification In The Congener Hydroides Hexagonus, J. B. Pettengill, M. G. Hadfield, M. D. Schug, D. E. Wendt

We isolated and characterized six polymorphic microsatellite loci for the polychaete tubeworm, Hydroides elegans. Two additional loci were not reliably scorable and estimates of heterozygosity were obtained for the other six. In addition, cross-species amplification was successful for two loci using the congener H. hexagonus. Given that few microsatellite loci are available for polychaetes, these markers will be useful in assessing dispersal and gene flow in H. elegans and probably also other polychaetes.

Forestry and livestock production are mainstays of the natural resource-based economies of many rural communities in the western United States and Canada. Regenerating mixed conifer forests may produce considerable amounts of ground vegetation that is suitable as livestock feed, while open-canopied pine forests in more arid conditions produce forage throughout their lives. Not surprisingly, there is a strong tradition of livestock grazing within western forests. Silvopasture, the combination of forest management and improved forage species, is a more intensive, controlled application of this traditional use. Discovering complex and meaningful relationships, which we call Semantic Associations, is an important challenge. Just as ranking of documents is a critical component of today's search engines, ranking of relationships will be essential in tomorrow's semantic search engines that would support discovery and mining of the Semantic Web. Building upon our recent work on specifying types of Semantic Associations in RDF graphs, which are possible to create through semantic metadata extraction and annotation, we discuss a framework where ranking techniques can be used to identify more interesting and more relevant Semantic Associations. Social Learning Of Prey Location In Hatchery-Reared Atlantic Salmon, C. Brown, A. Markula, K. Laland

Naïve, hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr were paired with demonstrators that had been pre-trained to accept live prey from the surface or from the benthos. After 6 days of observing demonstrators through a clear perspex partition the naïve fish’s benthic foraging skills were tested. The results revealed that hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon can be taught to target benthic prey items by observation alone and social learning protocols can be utilized to dramatically increase benthic foraging success. The results are discussed with reference to refining hatchery-rearing practices with a view to improving the post-release survival of hatchery fishes. The role of …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 4 - Determining Waste Excretion Parameters From Barramundi Aquaculture: Final Report For Aquaculture Development Fund Of Wa, Brett Glencross, Neil Rutherford, Wayne Hawkins

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

This study was undertaken to evaluate the nutrient excretion budgets for each of three key commercial diets when fed to barramundi (Lates calcarifer). The diets differed primarily in their energy density ranging from 21.3 MJ/kg DM to 23.0 MJ/kg DM, with the protein content of each diet being relatively constant at around 550 g/kg DM. The determination of the nutrient excretion budgets required the assessment of the digestibilities of key nutrients from each of the diets and also the specific retention of nutrients over a prolonged period. This necessitated two digestibility trials and a growth trial.
