They have been described as “a real shopping mall for terrorists” and “more dangerous than even nuclear weapons.”

They are arguably the scariest legacy of the Cold War: massive stockpiles of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons stored throughout the former Soviet Union.

Many of these weapons stockpiles, some of which are housed in glorified pole sheds “secured” with little more than a single padlock, are well within reach of al-Qaida and other terrorists groups as well as black marketers, creating serious threats not only to nearby communities, but also the world at large.

Effects Of Chronic Caffeine Pre-Exposure On Conditioned And Unconditioned Psychomotor Activity Induced By Nicotine And Amphetamine In Rats, M. I. Palmatier, E. Y. K. Fung, Rick A. Bevins

Three experiments examined the effects of chronic preexposure to caffeine on the subsequent conditioned and unconditioned locomotor activating effects of nicotine or amphetamine in rats. Rats were given daily intraperitoneal injections of caffeine anhydrous (0, 10 or 30 mg/kg base) for 30 days. Conditioning (environment-drug pairings) began after the last day of caffeine pre-exposure. Preexposure to 30 mg/kg of caffeine enhanced the acute and chronic locomotor effects of amphetamine (0.5 mg/kg). A similar enhancement of activity was not seen with the high (0.421 mg/kg base) or low dose (0.175 mg/kg) of nicotine. In a drug-free test, the distinct environment paired …

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

. It is of recent interest in reproductive health research to investigate the validity of a marker event for the onset of menopausal transition and to estimate age at menopause using age at the marker event. We propose a varying coefficient Cox model to investigate the association between age at a marker event, denned as a specific bleeding pattern change, and age at menopause, where both events are subject to censoring and their association varies with age at the marker event. Successful microbial-mediated remediation requires transformation pathways that maximize metabolism and minimize the accumulation of toxic products. Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain MX, isolated from munitionscontaminated soil, degraded 100 mg TNT L^-1 in culture medium within 10 h under aerobic conditions. The major TNT products were 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene (2ADNT, primarily in the supernatant) and 2,2′- azoxytoluene (2,2′AZT, primarily in the cell fraction), which accumulated as major products via the intermediate 2-hydroxylamino-4,6-dinitrotoluene(2HADNT). The 2HADNT and 2,2′AZT were relatively less toxic to the strain than TNT and 2ADNT. Aminodinitrotoluene (ADNT) production increased when yeast extract was added to the medium. Genetic test results provide information relevant to the future health of the person tested as well as parents, siblings, children and more distant relatives. This Article examines the legal consequences that might follow a decision to share or withhold genetic information. It argues that the obstacles to liability might not be justified in situations where either disclosure of genetic information or silence will cause significant harm.

Since the recent war with Iraq, there is a lingering question as to how to prosecute Saddam Hussein (if captured) and the Iraqi regime for their past atrocities, particularly, the use of chemcial weapons against Iran during the Iran-Iraq War and the Kurds. This article provides a background of the crimes committed by the Iraqi regime, a discussion and recommendation of the various proseution fora, as well as a presentation of the evidence that can be used in a prosecution.

Despite the legal and ethical concerns raised, biotechnology continues to offer countless opportunities for enhancing military capabilities. As such, the research, development and utilization of biotechnological products are present realities in the U.S. and abroad, both within and outside of the defense context. However, testing and usage, as well as effective collaboration between Allies, calls for the resolution of complex and pressing issues presented by this intersection of science, technology, and human lives. The Evidence For Pain In Fish: The Use Of Morphine As An Analgesic, Lynne U. Sneddon

This paper discusses the evidence for pain perception in fish and presents new data on morphine analgesia in fish. Recent anatomical and electrophysiological studies have demonstrated that fish are capable of nociception, the simple detection of a noxious, potentially painful stimulus and the reflex response to this. To prove pain perception, it must be demonstrated that an animal’s behaviour is adversely affected by a potentially painful event and this must not be a reflex response. The present study examined the acute effects of administering a noxious chemical to the lips of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to assess what changes occurred …
