Participation In Victim-Offender Mediation And The Prevalence And Severity Of Subsequent Delinquent Behavior: A Meta-Analysis, William R. Nugent, Mona Williams, Mark S. Umbreit

Utah Law Review

Recently there has been the reemergence of an ancient philosophy ofjustice that has been called "restorative justice."' In this philosophy, a crime is viewed as an offense against a victim, and the emphasis is on resolving conflict, repairing harm to the victim, holding the offender accountable to the victim, and returning things as much as possible to the way they were before the offense occurred.' Victim-offender mediation is the oldest and most widely practiced expression of restorative justice. Victim-offender mediation (VOM) programs have most commonly involved the victims and perpetrators ofjuvenile property offenses and minor assaults, though there have been …

White Racial Identification As A Predictor Of Prejudice In Simulated Criminal Sentencing., Scott David Guldseth Jan 2003

White Racial Identification As A Predictor Of Prejudice In Simulated Criminal Sentencing., Scott David Guldseth

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to assess the validity of the White Racial Identity Attitude Scale (WRIAS: Helms & Carter, 1990) and Modem Racism Scale (MRS: McConahay, Hardee & Batts, 1981) in the prediction of discriminatory behavior. These measures were hypothesized to predict prejudiced behavior associated with simulated criminal sentencing as reflected in the Criminal Justice Questionnaire (CJQ) developed for purposes of the present study. The CJQ was administered on two occasions separated by a one month interval. Descriptions are given for six crimes (shoplifting, robbery, DWI, murder, rape, and child molestation) and the perpetrator race is manipulated in a …

Liturgical Hospitality: Theological Refl Ections On Sharing In Grace, Hans Boersma Jan 2003

Liturgical Hospitality: Theological Refl Ections On Sharing In Grace, Hans Boersma

Journal for Christian Theological Research

This essay looks at the Church's liturgy using the metaphor of hospitality. The following assumptions will guide its development: (1) that the Church's practice of hospitality is both a reflection and an extension of God's own hospitality (Reinhard Huetter); (2) that there is a participatory identity between Christ and the Church, with this connection implying that liturgical hospitality forms the primary shape of God's gracious hospitality in our world, specifically as that hospitality is mediated by the Church through the preaching of the Gospel and the administration of the sacraments; (3) that liturgical hospitality cannot function properly without regard for …

From Fleck’S Denkstil To Kuhn’S Paradigm: Conceptual Schemes And Incommensurability, Babette Babich Jan 2003

From Fleck’S Denkstil To Kuhn’S Paradigm: Conceptual Schemes And Incommensurability, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

This article argues that the limited influence of Ludwik Fleck’s ideas on philosophy of science is due not only to their indirect dissemination by way of Thomas Kuhn, but also to an incommensurability between the standard conceptual framework of history and philosophy of science and Fleck’s own more integratedly historico-social and praxis-oriented approach to understanding the evolution of scientific discovery. What Kuhn named “paradigm” offers a periphrastic rendering or oblique translation of Fleck’s Denkstil/Denkkollektiv, a derivation that may also account for the lability of the term “paradigm”. This was due not to Kuhn’s unwillingness to credit Fleck but rather to …

1903-2003 Centennial History: Arts & Sciences, Western Michigan University

Histories of Western Michigan University

Dear Friends,

The College of Arts and Sciences has played a dynamic role in the growth and development of Western Michigan University. Many of the College's 20 departments and 6 interdisciplinary programs are foundation stones upon which the University was built and were present at the establishment of Western State Normal School in 1903.

The College of Arts and Sciences' roots originate with the Divisions of Language and Literature, Social Sciences, and part of the Division of Science and Mathematics. In the 1956-57 school year, these divisions were grouped together to become the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For …
