An Analysis Of The Majority Report “Responsible Parenthood” And Its Recommendations On Abortion, Sterilization And Contraception, Richard J. Fehring
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
This paper will focus on the majority report (titled “Responsible Parenthood”) of the 1966 Papal Birth Control Commission and its recommendations on abortion, sterilization, and contraception.(1) The analysis is made with the hindsight and perspective of thirty-seven years of scientific data on fertility, family planning, and family life. The analysis presented here does not concern the whole document but rather focuses on what are called the “objective criteria” that were provided in the document to help married couples make decisions on the use of contraception. While acknowledging the intellectual abilities and expertise of those who wrote the majority report, the …
Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva
Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis questions whether the film Fight Club, as a postmodern text, reaches a rhetorical goal of critical subversion, and if so, how does it reach this goal? Using a method of postmodern critical theory, this thesis argues that Fight Club does reach a goal of critical subversion by parodically installing and subverting modern hegemonic assumptions and challenging hegemonic cultural practices.
My Re-Americanization, Willard R. Garred
My Re-Americanization, Willard R. Garred
The Bridge
They met in Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark. Ray Garred was a United States Navy sailor with a squadron of battleships sent by President William Howard Taft on a goodwill tour of England, the Scandinavian capitals, and Kronstadt, St. Petersburg's port city and Russian naval base. She was a Danish girl, Olavia Frederiksen, who had spent four years in the United States as a domestic servant and had learned English in an evening school for immigrants. The year was 1911, summer time. Tivoli, as many tourists know, is a natural place for visitors to Copenhagen to congregate, and it was where a …
Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen
Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen
The Bridge
The poem by Emma Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty defines the classical model of immigrants fleeing from poverty, oppression, or persecution. They are refugees, forced by intolerable circumstances to move from their homeland. Less stereotypic is the highly skilled or educated individual who makes a positive choice towards better opportunity. These immigrants tend to come as individuals or as a nuclear family and are less likely to live in or identify with an ethnic group. They assimilate more readily, especially if they have some English before arrival, while keeping closer ties with relatives and making more frequent trips to …
Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen
Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen
The Bridge
On October 8, 1936, The Dannebrog News printed a special issue celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Dannebrog's incorporation as a town. The first Danish immigrants arrived in Howard County in 1871 and founded the settlement of Dannebrog the following year. But it would be another fourteen years before Dannebrog received official status and could establish its first town council. First appearing in 1898, the English-language The Dannebrog News became the longest persevering publication in the Dannebrog area. It was not the town's first, however, as two other newspapers preceded it. In the spring of 1874, an attorney by the name …

They were also asked their perceptions of the need for collaborative relationships, the benefits of partnerships, occurrences of collaboration, and the perceived barriers to collaboration at their institutions. Seven scale composites were created to allow for a clear comparison of administrative responses on …
Resource Consultation : A Study Of The Relationship Between An Elementary Mathematics Teacher And The Talented And Gifted Coordinator, Janine Kane
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to document the relationship between a fourth grade teacher and the talented and gifted (TAG) coordinator as they provided services to advanced learners in mathematics. The participants' conversations during consultation sessions were transcribed and analyzed. Categories included curriculum and methods, grouping, relationship, barriers, and mentoring. Interviews, questionnaires, and observations of classroom instruction provided supporting data. Little mentoring occurred during the participants' interactions and a pull-out model of service provision was followed. Possible reasons for the continued use of the pull-out model were barriers (e.g., time, space, and class assignment practices), the participants' beliefs, the …

Baby Girls From China In New York: A Thrice-Told Tale, Barbara Stark
Baby Girls From China In New York: A Thrice-Told Tale, Barbara Stark
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Every year, almost one million baby girls are “missing” in China. These are the babies predicted to be girls who never appear in national registries. In 2000, more than 5000 baby girls born in China were adopted by U.S. parents and emigrated to the United States. This Article examines the forces that drive adoptions of children from the world's most populous country to its richest from the perspectives of the participants. It analyzes the Chinese, United States, and international laws -- and the violation of these laws -- that make this migration possible.
The story is told from three perspectives: …

Phase Transitions Occurring In Models Of Neighborhood Racial Segregation, Alexander J. Laurie '03
Honors Projects
This thesis is organized as two chapters whose contents are closely related yet quite distinct. The first chapter presents a paper "Role of 'Vision' in Neighborhood Racial Segregation: A Variant of the Schelling Segregation Model," authored by myself and Dr. Jaggi, which has been accepted for publication by the journal Urban Studies and is currently in press (as of April 2003). This chapter introduces the well-known Schelling model of neighborhood segregation, outlines the sociopolitical motivation for our work, and presents the key results that we believe are of interest to social scientists. Chapter two, which ought to be of greater …
Measuring Culture And Cultural Change, James Melton '03
Measuring Culture And Cultural Change, James Melton '03
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
Mary Douglas’s grid/group analysis has been a very influential theory for many culture theorists in all fields of the social sciences. There are two good reasons for importance of this theory. It allows for an interaction between the individual and the culture, and it can explain cultural change. There has been some theorizing about the implications of these innovations; however, little empirical work has been done to test these implications. The reason for this, at least partly, is the lack of an indicator capable of easily measuring culture on a wide-scale basis. This paper attempts to solve this problem by …

Masculinity And Homophobia: Does Masculine Threat Increase Homophobic Behavior?, Julie M. Longo '03
Honors Projects
Threatened masculinity may play a role in homophobic responses in college men. In this study, homophobic or non-homophobic responses to a gay confederate were measured after a masculine threat or no threat manipulation. 49 college men participated in the study: 24 in the masculine threat condition and 25 in the no threat condition. Masculinity level was pre-determined in an initial phase one testing using the Male Role Norms Scale (MRNS). In the masculine threat condition, participants were given a test that was said to measure masculine knowledge and then received false negative feedback. The no threat condition involved a general …

Parenting And Adult Development: Contexts, Processes, And Products Of Intergenerational Relationships, Rob Palkovitz, Loren D. Marks, David W. Appleby, Erin K. Holmes
Faculty Publications
For the past 50 years, parenthood has been discussed in social science literature as a context of adult development. Theories, anecdotes, and the opinions of laypersons are nearly unanimous: People who become parents and are involved in the raising of children are transformed and follow a different developmental trajectory from people who do not engage in parenting roles. Erickson (1950) suggested that positive adult development reflects care for the next generation, or "generativity," and that parenthood is "the first, and for many, the prime generative encounter" (Erickson, 1964, p. 130). More recently, parenthood has been described as a necessary but …

“Rocky Mountain Entrepreneur: Robert Campbell As A Fur Trade Capitalist.”, Jay H. Buckley
Faculty Publications
Between 1825 and 1835 Robert Campbell emerged as a fur trade entrepreneur. Campbell served as clerk for Ashley-Smith, as brigade leader for Smith, Jackson, and Sublette, and supplier and financier for the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. Campbell quickly became a dominant figure in the American fur trade. In addition to leading fur brigades, Campbell and his partner William Sublette built several trading posts (most notably Fort Laramie), supplied the annual rendezvous, and challenged John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company on the Missouri River. Through it all, Campbell's business acumen helped him pursue economic opportunities that paved the way for future …

Searching For Greater Variety In Strategic Thinking, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt
Searching For Greater Variety In Strategic Thinking, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt
Conference papers
This paper proposes a use of the discursive approach to explicate variety in ways of strategic thinking. Such an explication of variety is both useful managerially in increasing awareness of greater discursive resources and also theoretically in critiquing views of strategic thinking as homogenous and organizationally contained. Ways of strategic thinking have been investigated using a variety of approaches including expertise perspectives (Voss, Greene et al. 1983), cognitive mapping (Eden, Jones et al. (1979); Huff (1990) ) and upper echelon theory (Hambrick 1998). More recently the linguistic turn in organizational sciences (Alvesson and Kärreman 2000), and the study of strategy …
Principles Of Metadesign : Processes And Levels Of Co-Creation In The New Design Space, Elisa Giaccardi
Principles Of Metadesign : Processes And Levels Of Co-Creation In The New Design Space, Elisa Giaccardi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
In the tight of the material and cultural conditions of the present world and within the context of current design theories, this research aims to provide an understanding of Metadesign as emerging design cutture, and to integrate and advance its conceptual framework and principles through a tra nsdisci pli nary dialogue with the aesthetics and practice of Net Art. By rejecting the notion of Metadesign as an established design approach and practice, the creation of an etymological hypothesis based on the meanings of the prefix "-meta" (behind, together, between) becomes possible. Following this historical and cultural path, the research describes …

Financial Collapse And Class Status: Who Goes Bankrupt?, Elizabeth Warren
Financial Collapse And Class Status: Who Goes Bankrupt?, Elizabeth Warren
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Every policy prescription, economic analysis, or news report about consumer bankruptcy rests on one or another unspoken image of the estimated 1.5 million families that will file in a single year. Data from the 2001 Consumer Bankruptcy Project permit a systematic analysis of the composition of those who file for personal bankruptcy, focusing on their education, occupation, and home ownership status. These attributes serve as a proxy for class identification. Based on these indicia, more than 90 per cent of the families in bankruptcy qualify as middle class. These data are a powerful reminder that whatever else might be said …
Non-Legitimate Illness, Embodied Experience And The Moral Career: The Case Of Me/Cfs, T Collett
Non-Legitimate Illness, Embodied Experience And The Moral Career: The Case Of Me/Cfs, T Collett
Peninsula Medical School
The condition known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is an illness of unknown aetiology. In the absence of any organic proof of its existence, the prevailing UK view is that it is a form of atypical depression or a somatic disorder. ME/CFS is said by sufferers to affect physical and cognitive functioning and last for years. However, many argue that because ME/CFS is seen as a psychological illness their complaints of ‘being really ill’ are not taken seriously. Based on a mixed method study of 266 persons with ME/CFS, this paper explores how individuals experience a chronic …

Portrayal Of Women In Magazine Advertisements Targeted Toward Three Age Groups Of Women : A Content Analysis, Stephanie Lynn Cummings
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Prior research has established that women are portrayed in sex roles in magazine advertisements. The purpose of this study was to explore this trend and to examine if the trend appears across audiences of various ages of women. Content analysis was used to analyze advertisements in magazines with female target audiences. Additionally, three categories of magazines, which correspond to the three age groups of women, were explored to see if the advertisements with sex role images of women appear across all three groups of women. The results of the advertisements revealed that teen and young women's magazines contained ads, which …

Parents, Educators, Law Enforcement, And Participation In Delinquent Behavior: Gender Socialization And Views Of Life Changes, Jolie Marie Imler
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The task of the proposed research is to determine the extent parents, educators, law enforcement, and participation in delinquent behavior influence responses of youth toward their hopefulness for the future and likelihood of attending college and whether the relationships differ by gender. Using gender socialization, social capital, and labeling theories as theoretical backgrounds, it is anticipated that contradictory socialization patterns, gendered access to social capital, and labels influence the resources and responses of female juveniles when considering hopefulness for the future and the likelihood of attending college. The proposed study will use secondary data comprised of youth either adjudicated delinquent …

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most research on attribute identification in database integration has focused on integrating attributes using schema and summary information derived from the attribute values. No research has attempted to fully explore the use of attribute values to perform attribute identification. We propose an attribute identification method that employs schema and summary instance information as well as properties of attributes derived from their instances. Unlike other attribute identification methods that match only single attributes, our method matches attribute groups for integration. Because our attribute identification method fully explores data instances, it can identify corresponding attributes to be integrated even when schema information …
