Taking Root In The Silicon Forest: The Role Of High Technology Firms As Surrogate Universities In Portland, Oregon, Heike Mayer
Taking Root In The Silicon Forest: The Role Of High Technology Firms As Surrogate Universities In Portland, Oregon, Heike Mayer
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the evolution of the high technology industry in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan region. The research explains how and why the region was able to grow a high technology industry cluster in the absence of a major world-class engineering and computer science research university. The research challenges the conventional assumption that a research university must be in place to create a high technology center. It was hypothesized that high technology firms functioned as surrogate research universities by attracting and developing labor, creating knowledge, and functioning as incubators for startup companies. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that a regional innovation milieu …

Law And Economics Of Restorative Justice: Why Restorative Justice Cannot And Should Not Be Solely About Restoration, Darren Bush
Law And Economics Of Restorative Justice: Why Restorative Justice Cannot And Should Not Be Solely About Restoration, Darren Bush
Utah Law Review
The economics jury (or sentencing circle) is still out on restorative justice. Clearly, a scheme that in some sense poorly mimics the tort system will be viewed by economists as doing little to prevent the recurrence of crime. Indeed, the lofty goal of compensation will be unfulfilled because of inadequate consideration of all the external victims of the crime apart from the direct victim and (in some loose sense) the community. On the other hand, the current system fails to compensate the victim and something has gone awry with the level of deterrence. Moreover, the current system may exacerbate the …

Creating An Entrepreneurial Culture At A Startup Engineering Program, Anthony J. Marchese, John L. Schmalzel, John C. Chen, K. Mark Weaver
Teaching Entrepreneurship to Engineering Students
In 1992, the College of Engineering at Rowan University was created as the direct result of a $100 million gift from entrepreneur Henry M. Rowan. Mr. Rowan’s requirements were that the gift be used to create a high-quality, public undergraduate engineering institution and to impact the economic development of southern New Jersey, a region which has historically lagged behind northern New Jersey. Having started with a clean curriculum slate during a period of national change in engineering curricula in response to ABET 2000, we had the opportunity to infuse an entrepreneurial culture into our engineering program from its inception. Specifically, …

Holism, Justice, And Atonement, John Braithwaite
Utah Law Review
Erik Luna in his contribution to this Symposium has provided us with a critique of mainstream theories of punishment that is without exception. He laments the endless trench warfare between proponents of these different positions and advocates a theoretical synthesis that is procedural.' I agree there is much to be synthesized, and there is particular virtue in synthesizing explanatory and normative theories. But one of the reasons there is virtue in such synthesis is that it enables us to see that some normative theories may be coherent in some possible world, but not in any empirically plausible world. Obversely, explanatory …
