Utah Law Review

This Symposium is important for its ability to make better known the great benefits in the use of restorative processes. Below, I try to summarize some of the many promising achievements of those processes, by which I mean to include such practices as victim-offender mediation, sentencing circles, and family-group conferences to name just the most common. While many people refer to such processes by the name "restorative justice," that term and its originators, in fact, have a more ambitious agenda than simply encouraging their use. But that agenda is not one that the frontline practitioners of restorative processes necessarily share. …

Utah Law Review

Recently there has been the reemergence of an ancient philosophy ofjustice that has been called "restorative justice."' In this philosophy, a crime is viewed as an offense against a victim, and the emphasis is on resolving conflict, repairing harm to the victim, holding the offender accountable to the victim, and returning things as much as possible to the way they were before the offense occurred.' Victim-offender mediation is the oldest and most widely practiced expression of restorative justice. Common Origins/"Different" Identities In Two Kaqchikel Maya Towns, Walter E. Little

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Kaqchikel Maya residents of San Antonio Aguas Calientes and Santa Catarina Barahona (neighboring towns in Guatemala) tell the same origin story. This story is used to root historically their concepts of collective identity and community. However, residents in each town hold that those in the other town have no real claim to the story. Both towns can equally claim this origin story, but the debate between residents of these towns offers an opportunity to discuss how the meaning of place is related to the historical and ethnographic contexts of which that place's residents are part.
