Retaining 4-H Volunteers By Effectively Delegating 4-H Program Responsibilities, Deb Jones

All Current Publications

There is an old adage of “work smarter, not harder.” An e ective leader/manager has to be able to motivate others to be involved. All too often, we attempt to do it all ourselves, thinking we can do it more quickly than taking time to explain to another person.

Genetic Relationships Among Leptographium Terebrantis And The Mycangial Fungi Of Three Western Dendroctonus Bark Beetles, Diana Six, Thomas C. Harrington, Joseph Steimel, Douglas Mcnew, T. D. Paine Nov 2003

Genetic Relationships Among Leptographium Terebrantis And The Mycangial Fungi Of Three Western Dendroctonus Bark Beetles, Diana Six, Thomas C. Harrington, Joseph Steimel, Douglas Mcnew, T. D. Paine

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Morphology, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction fragment polymorphisms (RFLPs) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) fingerprinting were used to clarify relationships among the morphologically similar Ophiostoma and Leptographium species associated with mycangia of three Dendroctonus bark beetles (Ophiostoma clavigerum associated with both D. ponderosae and D. jeffreyi, and L. pyrinum associated with D. adjunctus), as well as a closely related nonmycangial bark beetle associate (L. terebrantis). Most isolates of O. clavigerum form long (40-70 μm), septate conidia, while all isolates of L. terebrantis and L. pyrinum form conidia less than 17.0 μm in length. The conidia of L. pyrinum are pyriform, with truncate …

Evaluation Of Foam Fractionation Column Scale-Up For Recovering Bovine Serum Albumin, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Kelly Gillette Nov 2003

Evaluation Of Foam Fractionation Column Scale-Up For Recovering Bovine Serum Albumin, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Kelly Gillette

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Foam fractionation is an adsorptive-bubble separation method that, according to researchers, is a feasible technique for the separation and/or concentration of proteins. The foam fractionation of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in laboratory-scale foam fractionation columns (750 and 1250 mL) and the relationship between the two laboratory-scale columns and a pilot-scale column (5000 mL) were investigated. Recovery, enrichment, and performance factor values were experimentally determined with three different column volumes with varying pore sizes, gas superficial velocities, and, in the case of the 750 mL column, foam column height. As the pore size decreased, the amount of protein recovered from the …

Plea Best Not Taken: Why Criminal Defendants Should Avoid The Alford Plea, A, Bryan H. Ward Nov 2003

Plea Best Not Taken: Why Criminal Defendants Should Avoid The Alford Plea, A, Bryan H. Ward

Missouri Law Review

After examining the North Carolina v. Alford decision in detail, this Article will first look at the broad arguments in favor of this type of plea. This Article will then focus on the body of case law dealing with the Alford plea and its effect on sentencing, probation and parole. While examining these cases this Article will also focus on the variety of arguments offered by criminal defendants who contend that it is impermissible to require an Alford-type defendant to express remorse for the offense or admit to the offense in any other context. This Article will conclude by reevaluating …

Class Actions And Ex Parte Communications: Can We Talk, Douglas R. Richmond Nov 2003

Class Actions And Ex Parte Communications: Can We Talk, Douglas R. Richmond

Missouri Law Review

The subject of ex parte communications with class members is a murky one. Here the rules of civil procedure and professional responsibility overlap as in no other area, and case law is relatively scarce. Insofar as class actions are litigated in federal courts, another problem is that many of the decisions on this subject are district court decisions, which lack precedential force. In sum, lawyers’ need for guidance in this area is significant and seems destined to grow in importance as class action litigation continues to spread.

The 2002 Supreme Court Decisions: Did They Leave Enough Of Apprendi To Effectively Protect Criminal Defendants?, Charlotte Leclercq Nov 2003

The 2002 Supreme Court Decisions: Did They Leave Enough Of Apprendi To Effectively Protect Criminal Defendants?, Charlotte Leclercq

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This comment explores the true impact of the 2000 landmark decision, Apprendi v. New Jersey, in which the United States Supreme Court determined that any fact that increases a criminal defendant's sentence beyond the statutory maximum has to be submitted to a jury and proven beyond a reasonable doubt. At the time, the decision appeared to be a triumph for the procedural due process rights of defendants. However the opinion of the majority, as well as those of the concurrence and dissents, left the actual effect of the decision subject to considerable debate among courts and commentators. In 2002 the …

Theoretical Investigation Of The Surface Vibrational Modes In Germanium Nanocrystals, Shang-Fen Ren, Wei Cheng, Peter Y. Yu Nov 2003

Theoretical Investigation Of The Surface Vibrational Modes In Germanium Nanocrystals, Shang-Fen Ren, Wei Cheng, Peter Y. Yu

Faculty publications – Physics

We have used a microscopic lattice dynamical model to study phonon modes in germanium (Ge) NC with size varying between 47 to 7289 atoms (diametersimilar to6.8 nm). By separating these atoms into bulk and surface atoms we have found that surface modes can exist in Ge NC both at low frequencies (<50>cm(-1)) and at high frequency (similar to260 cm(-1)). The latter mode is a resonant mode which occurs in the "pseudogap" between the acoustic and optical phonon branches in bulk Ge. From the low frequency surface modes we have been able to reconstruct the spheroidal and torsional Lamb modes …

Credit History And The Performance Of Prime And Nonprime Mortgages, Anthony Pennington-Cross Nov 2003

Credit History And The Performance Of Prime And Nonprime Mortgages, Anthony Pennington-Cross

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Although nonprime lending has experienced steady or even explosive growth over the last decade very little is known about the performance characteristics of these mortgages. Using data from national secondary market institutions, this paper estimates a competing risks proportional hazard model, which includes unobserved heterogeneity. The analysis examines the performance of 30-year fixed rate owner occupied home purchase mortgages from February 1995 to the end of 1999 and compares nonprime and prime loan default and prepayment behavior. Nonprime loans are identified by mortgage interest rates that are substantially higher than the prevailing prime rate. Results indicate that nonprime mortgages differ …

Race And Local Television News Crime Coverage, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt Nov 2003

Race And Local Television News Crime Coverage, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

Viewers of local television newscasts across the United States are regularly exposed to crime news stories. Crime coverage by local television stations is studied with an interest in how live reporting, dramatic video, and timeliness influence perceptions of race in the United States. Crime coverage did not always identify the race of a suspect because that information often was not available from police. However, when violent criminals or suspects were identified, race normally was shown through a mug shot, photograph, or video from the scene. When an African-American suspect was shown in police custody, the images tended to reinforce existing …

The Maintenance Of Conservative Physical Laws Within Data Assimilation Systems, G.A. Jacobs, H.E. Ngodock Nov 2003

The Maintenance Of Conservative Physical Laws Within Data Assimilation Systems, G.A. Jacobs, H.E. Ngodock

Faculty Publications

In many data assimilation applications, adding an error to represent forcing to certain dynamical equations may be physically unrealistic. Four-dimensional variational methods assume either an error in the dynamical equations of motion (weak constraint) or no error (strong constraint). The weak-constraint methodology proposes the errors to represent uncertainties in either forcing of the dynamical equations or parameterizations of dynamics. Dynamical equations that represent conservation of quantities (mass, entropy, momentum, etc.) may be cast in an analytical or control volume flux form containing minimal errors. The largest errors arise in determining the fluxes through control volume surfaces. Application of forcing errors …

A Study Of Enso Prediction Using A Hybrid Coupled Model And The Adjoint Method For Data Assimilation, Eli Galanti, Eli Tziperman, Matthew Harrison, Anthony Rosati, Ziv Sirkes Nov 2003

A Study Of Enso Prediction Using A Hybrid Coupled Model And The Adjoint Method For Data Assimilation, Eli Galanti, Eli Tziperman, Matthew Harrison, Anthony Rosati, Ziv Sirkes

Faculty Publications

An experimental ENSO prediction system is presented, based on an ocean general circulation model (GCM) coupled to a statistical atmosphere and the adjoint method of 4D variational data assimilation. The adjoint method is used to initialize the coupled model, and predictions are performed for the period 1980-99. The coupled model is also initialized using two simpler assimilation techniques: forcing the ocean model with observed sea surface temperature and surface fluxes, and a 3D variational data assimilation (3DVAR) method, similar to that used by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) for operational ENSO prediction. The prediction skill of the coupled …

Managed Care’S Crimea: Medical Necessity, Therapeutic Benefit, And The Goals Of Administrative Process In Health Insurance, William M. Sage Nov 2003

Managed Care’S Crimea: Medical Necessity, Therapeutic Benefit, And The Goals Of Administrative Process In Health Insurance, William M. Sage

Faculty Scholarship

This Essay explores the concept of medical necessity as it has evolved in the judicial and administrative oversight of managed care. The goals of the Essay are to illustrate the range of plausible rationales for establishing administrative procedures to govern medical necessity disputes, and to demonstrate the difficulty of incorporating into those procedures the most important professional and social responsibilities of managed care in today’s health care system. Part I of the Essay explains the ideological and practical significance of medical necessity as managed care has evolved. Part II examines medical necessity as a legal problem, and questions whether current …
