Cultural Imposition Or Cross-Cultural Communication: An Auto-Ethnographic Exploration Of Christian Missionary Rhetorics, Marian Draffin Jan 2003

Cultural Imposition Or Cross-Cultural Communication: An Auto-Ethnographic Exploration Of Christian Missionary Rhetorics, Marian Draffin

Honors Theses

This project is a tropological and visual exploration of the rhetorics of Christian missionary culture written in an auto-ethnographic mode. The texts explored include a sample of recruitment brochures produced by mission's organizations, recorded accounts of those who were affected by missions, either as a missionary or as a member of the respondent culture, and journals and photographic images from my own short term missionary work. This exploration is driven by my curiosity about the power dynamics of Christian missionary work: Is the work of a Christian missionary culture a type of cultural imposition and domination? Can Christian missionary work …

Ohio's Patient-Physician Privilege: Whether Planned Parenthood Is A Protected Party, Melissa O'Neill Jan 2003

Ohio's Patient-Physician Privilege: Whether Planned Parenthood Is A Protected Party, Melissa O'Neill

Journal of Law and Health

This article will suggest that under Ohio's patient-physician privilege, the results of pregnancy tests that are administered at Planned Parenthood clinics will not be considered privileged or confidential information, unless the test is administered by a physician and is later used by a physician in treatment of the woman. In particular, this article will briefly examine the history of a right to medical privacy, the development of the patient-physician privilege and the origin of Planned Parenthood . The notion of very intimate details of a person's health, including diseases, conditions, diagnoses and prognoses being readily available to whoever would like …

What Successful Companies Know That Law Firms Need To Know: The Importance Of Employee Motivation And Job Satisfaction To Increased Productivity And Stronger Client Relationships, Theresa M. Neff Jan 2003

What Successful Companies Know That Law Firms Need To Know: The Importance Of Employee Motivation And Job Satisfaction To Increased Productivity And Stronger Client Relationships, Theresa M. Neff

Journal of Law and Health

This note examines the importance of employee motivation and job satisfaction to increased productivity and stronger client relationships with law firms. In Part I, I discuss how the pressure of the legal profession can affect lawyers' relationships with their staff members. My analysis will center on recent studies on lawyer job satisfaction, the impact of stress on lawyers, and the public's perception of lawyers. In Part II, I discuss the law firm as a "service" organization and the implications of that orientation. In this section, I also emphasize the importance of building and maintaining relationships with clients and how law …

Problem Behavior Theory In An Ethnically Diverse Female Prison Sample, Kristen J. Quinlan Jan 2003

Problem Behavior Theory In An Ethnically Diverse Female Prison Sample, Kristen J. Quinlan

Open Access Master's Theses

Research on female inmates has shown that this population engages in a variety of risky behaviors, like alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and risky sexual activities, and that these problem behaviors seem to share high positive intercorrelations. Problem Behavior Theory (PBT) explains these positive intercorrelations by viewing problem behaviors like alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and risky sexual activities as a single factor, or a single behavioral syndrome. Although the presence of this syndrome has been demonstrated in a variety of ethnically diverse adolescent samples, little work has been done to evaluate its presence in a sample of adults. Adult female inmantes …

Spirituality And The Quality Of Life: Relationships Between Existential Well-Being And Aspectgs Of Life Functioning, Bettina Brigit Höppner Jan 2003

Spirituality And The Quality Of Life: Relationships Between Existential Well-Being And Aspectgs Of Life Functioning, Bettina Brigit Höppner

Open Access Master's Theses

The focus of this thesis is the role of spirituality within the quality of life. This role is explored in a macro-level approach by investigating the overall relationships between existential well-being, of which spirituality is seen as a part of, and life functioning. This macro-level investigation is then followed by a more detailed, variable specific micro-level delineation of relationships.

Recognizing the fact that spirituality cannot be discussed without an implicit reference to the overall concept of religion, the connections between spirituality and religion is explicitly discussed, although this connection is not the focus of this study. Thus, by way of …

Scale Validation Of High School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Catherine Ernst Jan 2003

Scale Validation Of High School Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Inclusion Of Students With Disabilities, Catherine Ernst

Open Access Master's Theses

Research has shown that teacher attitudes influence their expectations of students and the way in which they interact with them (Brophy & Good, 1972; Brownwell & Pajares, 1999; Bryan 1974; Cook 2001; Harris, Snodgrass, & Rosenthal, 1986; Jordan & Stanovich, 2001; Kuklinski & Weinstein, 2001; Rosenthal, 2002). Ajzen and Fishbein (1969) developed the Theory of Reasoned Action, which proposes that people's behavior is determined by intention and that these intentions are represented in people's attitudes toward the behavior and the perceived norm of that behavior. Beginning with the passage of Public Law 94-142 and the IDEA reauthorization, regular education teachers …

Does The Number Matter: An Investigative Study Of The Relationship Between Household Composition And Juvenile Delinquency, Littisha A. Scott Jan 2003

Does The Number Matter: An Investigative Study Of The Relationship Between Household Composition And Juvenile Delinquency, Littisha A. Scott

McNair Scholars Journal

Single-parent households have been stigmatized and blamed for many social problems including increased rates of juvenile delinquency. I argue that single-parent households do not directly contribute to juvenile delinquency. Rather, socioeconomic status, the amount of human capital invested in each child, and parental involvement all play a significant role in the outcome being examined. Questionnaires received from 225 respondents will be analyzed so as to investigate the relationship between household resources and juvenile delinquency. I will examine the predictors of delinquency through an examination of twelve selected acts of delinquency.

Essential Components Of Psychosocial Care For Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients, Beverly Lee Laird Jan 2003

Essential Components Of Psychosocial Care For Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients, Beverly Lee Laird

All ETDs from UAB

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States, and, today, there are approximately 1.7 million women living with breast cancer. Due to earlier detection and better treatments, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer has increased dramatically in the past few decades. With better survival rates has come increased attention to other needs for cancer patients, including information and psychosocial support. Providing appropriate psychosocial care as an adjunct to standard medical treatment is expected to improve quality of life for cancer survivors, which is one of the three major 2015 goals for the American …
