Stretching The Academic Dollar: The Appropriateness Of Utilizing Instructor Assistants In The Basic Course, Paul D. Turman, Matthew H. Barton

Basic Communication Course Annual

As more universities across the country are feeling the pressures of providing an increasingly rigid financial accountability to tax payers and state legislatures, speech and communication departments find themselves in a precarious position. Namely, how can communication departments teach the budding number of students enrolled in their courses with little increase in budget, while continuing to produce effective speakers? One common answer to this dilemma involves the use of graduate students, and in some cases undergraduate students, as teaching assistants in the basic course. This study examines the efficacy of using undergraduate instructor assistants in the basic course at a …

Emotional Intelligence Competencies In Physician Leaders: An Exploratory Study, Michael J. Deegan

Student Scholarship

A theory of behavioral competencies associated with emotional intelligence that influence job performance, was tested in physicians who hold leadership positions in their organization. An emotional intelligence competency ( EIC ) survey ( the ECI-2 ) that measured eighteen competencies distributed among four cluster groups ( self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship management ) was administered to physician leaders and their supervisors, peers and direct reports. The resulting 360 degree assessment permitted a comparison of the physician leaders self assessment scores with one another and those working closely with them. In addition, independent objective and subjective measures of physician …

The Law Is Straight And Narrow, How American Courts Define Families, Elisa Laird Jan 2003

The Law Is Straight And Narrow, How American Courts Define Families, Elisa Laird

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that American law is inherently biased toward traditional heterosexual family structures, creating significant barriers for same-sex couples and non-traditional families seeking legal recognition and rights. The legal system's "straight and narrow" framework often excludes these families from accessing benefits and protections granted to heterosexual families, reflecting deeply entrenched religious and historical influences.

The Silencing Of A Woman's Choice: Mandatory Arrest And No Drop Prosecution Policies In Domestic Violence Cases, Jessica Dayton Jan 2003

The Silencing Of A Woman's Choice: Mandatory Arrest And No Drop Prosecution Policies In Domestic Violence Cases, Jessica Dayton

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques mandatory arrest and no-drop prosecution policies in domestic violence cases, arguing that these policies undermine the autonomy of women by taking away their right to make decisions about their own safety and legal actions. The author advocates for a more flexible, victim-centered approach that respects each woman's unique circumstances and empowers her to make informed choices.

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article explores the tension Argentinean women face between traditional cultural and religious expectations and their aspirations for modern roles, highlighting the systemic barriers and cultural norms that limit their progress. The author, drawing from personal experience and historical analysis, argues for the need to redefine gender roles and challenge oppressive structures to achieve true equality.

Title Vii Limitations-Keeping The Workplace Hostile, Diane Gentry Jan 2003

Title Vii Limitations-Keeping The Workplace Hostile, Diane Gentry

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, as currently interpreted and applied, fails to effectively address workplace sexism and harassment because its legal framework is rooted in patriarchal assumptions. The statute's focus on sexual harassment often overlooks broader gender-based discrimination, leaving many women without adequate legal recourse. The article contends that the law perpetuates male-dominated work cultures by narrowly defining actionable harassment and requiring proof of unwelcome behavior, which places undue burdens on victims.

From Genes, Marriage And Money To Nurture: Redefining Fatherhood, Nancy E. Dowd

It critiques the increasing reliance on genetic ties for legal definitions and advocates for a shift towards recognizing fatherhood through active caregiving and emotional support, emphasizing the importance of nurturing over economic roles.

How The Overturn Of The Child Pornography Prevention Act Under Ashcroft V. Free Speech Coalition Contributes To The Protection Of Children, Emily D. Goldberg

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the Supreme Court's decision in Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition, which struck down portions of the Child Pornography Prevention Act (CPPA) as unconstitutional under the First Amendment. The Court ruled that the CPPA's ban on virtual child pornography was overbroad, as it prohibited lawful speech that could have artistic, literary, or scientific value. The decision highlights the tension between protecting children from exploitation and safeguarding free speech, ultimately emphasizing the importance of allowing narratives that confront and address difficult issues like child sexual abuse.

"Baleful Weeds And Precious-Juiced Flowers": Romeo And Juliet And Renaissance Medical Discourse, Erica Nicole Daigle Jan 2003

"Baleful Weeds And Precious-Juiced Flowers": Romeo And Juliet And Renaissance Medical Discourse, Erica Nicole Daigle

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis claims that Shakespeare exaggerated the characterization of two figures in Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence and the apothecary, to make a statement about the conditions of medical treatment in sixteenth century London. These two figures represent two very different approaches to healing, one that is informed with ancient holistic medical theory and one that is driven by economics, and this work attempts to explain the cultural conditions that warranted such a discrepancy in the play. I address these two medical figures in the contexts of the events of the text, of the contemporary medical profession, and of materialism …

The Effects Of Employee Service Quality Provision And Customer Personality Traits On Customer Participation, Satisfaction, And Repurchase Intentions, Jeannie Denise John Jan 2003

The Effects Of Employee Service Quality Provision And Customer Personality Traits On Customer Participation, Satisfaction, And Repurchase Intentions, Jeannie Denise John

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research investigates customer-employee interaction during service encounters, and whether the relationships between customer personality traits and quality of the employee’s service delivery will impact the customer’s participation, satisfaction, and repurchase intentions. Consumer personality is differentiated in terms of the self-monitoring (Snyder 1987) and locus of control (Rotter 1966) traits. Service quality provision is manipulated in terms of technical versus functional quality inputs, and whether these inputs are provided in a positive (i.e., good/superior) or negative (i.e., bad/poor) manner. These manipulations yield four combinations of service quality inputs: 1) positive technical and functional quality inputs; 2) positive technical, but negative …

Design Guidelines Of A Therapeutic Garden For Autistic Children, Bonnie Barnes Hebert Jan 2003

Design Guidelines Of A Therapeutic Garden For Autistic Children, Bonnie Barnes Hebert

LSU Master's Theses

This study establishes a set of guidelines for designing a therapeutic garden for autistic children. To understand how a garden may provide benefit, the literature on healing gardens is reviewed. The history of gardens in hospital settings and other healthcare institutions is examined. In addition, published work on the effects of nature on stress and health outcomes and theories as to why nature is restorative is included in the review of the literature. Because the focus of the study is outdoor environments for autistic children, published works on children’s outdoor environments and the topic of play are reviewed as well. …

Young Children’S Responses To Conflictual Adult Conversation, Jessica A. Cartozian Jan 2003

Young Children’S Responses To Conflictual Adult Conversation, Jessica A. Cartozian

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The current study evaluated relationships among children's cognitions following exposure to scripted conflictual interactions between adults. Thirty- five mother-child dyads were assessed using self-report measures, and continuous measures of behavioral and physiological distress (cardiac function, skin conductance). Four hypotheses were investigated: Exposure to conflict would be related to greater distress following the conflictual script; attributional errors would be related to greater distress; child distress would be positively correlated with parental conflict at home; maternal psychopathology would be positively related with distress responses to the stimulus. All hypotheses were found to be non-significant. Explanations for non-significance include the normative sample, the …

Disarming The Externalist Threat To Self-Knowledge, Gabriel Guy Cate Jan 2003

Disarming The Externalist Threat To Self-Knowledge, Gabriel Guy Cate

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine various attempts to disarm the externalist threat to self-knowledge. That threat is engendered by a certain causal theory of meaning and reference, which suggests that empirical investigations may be required to know the contents of our own thoughts. It is claimed, then, that direct, non-inferential self-knowledge of our own mental states, is not possible if externalism is true. The leading compatibilist strategies that attempt to reconcile these apparently conflicting theses are explored and criticized. I conclude by offering what I take to be the essential features of a more successful compatibilist strategy.
