UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Counsel for the medical software technologist faces an unusually complex, ongoing, high-stakes challenge. Counsel operates in a special field of commercial, legal and regulatory forces: (1) intellectual property laws which govern the expression and protection of commercial rights derived from advances in medical science and technology; (2) existing and proposed contracts/warranty laws that govern technological commercial relationships; (3) negligence, professional liability, and product liability laws that govern the marketing of medical technologies; and, (4) a new body of regulation derived from the power of the federal government to indirectly provide for the safety, effectiveness, privacy, and security of medical technologies …

Looking Backward: The Twentieth Century Revolutions In Psychiatry, Law And Public Mental Health, Sheldon Gelman

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Do histories of psychiatry make a difference--or have legal implications--in the present? Does our current situation help explain what historians say about psychiatry's past? Focusing on the past half century--the era of medications-- this paper explores the reciprocal relationship between the present and the past in psychiatry. Part II sketches the medical developments that constitute the subjects of any history of psychiatry. This Part also examines related developments in law. Part III introduces some problems of psychiatric historiography and examines some historians' attempts to deal with them. Part IV analyzes the account of psychiatry's past contained in Edward Shorter's well-regarded …

Active Learning Benefits All Learning Styles: 10 Easy Ways To Improve Your Teaching, Barbara Tyler

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Two things made me a better teacher: my blind student and my deaf student. I realized when forced to confront my deficiencies several years ago that I did not speak enough for the blind student's auditory needs, nor did I provide enough images for the deaf student's visual learning needs. I corrected those deficiencies. Yet, I was still dissatisfied with the extent of my students' retained knowledge when I assessed their learning through class questions, exercises, quizzes, and tests. Then I learned that I was a kinesthetic learner. I began to read about learning styles and found that my own impatience …

Perceived Motivational Factors Among Allied Health Managers And Subordinates, Sandra Barker Dunbar Jan 2003

Perceived Motivational Factors Among Allied Health Managers And Subordinates, Sandra Barker Dunbar

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

This exploratory study sought to assess the differences in perceptions among allied health managers and subordinates regarding motivation in the workplace due to a paucity of literature in this area. With an increased demand for higher productivity, an ever-changing health care system and managed care restrictions, it is also important to understand what may motivate individuals who are functioning within different work environments than in the past. The hygiene and motivator factors from Herzberg’s two factor theory created the independent variables which overlap with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs descriptions. These included Basic (job security, salary etc.), Safety (work conditions, pension), …

The Role Of Group Values In The Relationship Between Group Faultlines And Performance, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn Jan 2003

The Role Of Group Values In The Relationship Between Group Faultlines And Performance, Katerina Bezrukova, Karen A. Jehn

Psychology

This study explores the moderating effects of group values on the relationship between group faultlines and performance. Faultlines occur when group members align along two or more different demographic characteristics causing a group to split into homogeneous subgroups (adapted from Lau and Murnighan, 1998). We theorize and empirically examine three group values variables: career-, change-, and task-specificity. Analyses are performed on 81 work groups from a Fortune 500 information processing firm. Two levels of performance are considered in connection with group faultlines: individual performance (performance ratings) and group performance (bonuses and stock options). Our results provide support for our model …

The Alliance Against Disarmament: The Atomic Energy Commission, The National Security Council, And The Joint Chiefs Of Staff, Mary D. Wammack

Psi Sigma Siren

Of the discussions that took place at the highest policy levels during the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower, those concerning the possibility of a diplomatic solution to the arms race with the Soviet Union were among the most urgent and, perhaps, the most consequential in their failure. In the United States, members of the Eisenhower cabinet and other agencies and departments analyzed and addressed the consequences of various diplomatic proposals. Throughout that assessment phase, the National Security Council, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Atomic Energy Commission joined in steadfast opposition to arms limitations. On the international plane, the …

Where Sin Abounds: A Religious History Of Las Vegas, Stanley Allen Steward Jan 2003

Where Sin Abounds: A Religious History Of Las Vegas, Stanley Allen Steward

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Las Vegas has long been stigmatized with the label of "Sin City." While it is not difficult to understand how this image of Las Vegas came about, the power of this stereotype has masked one of the most interesting aspects of the local culture. It is a common assumption of many outsiders that Las Vegas is a spiritual wasteland devoid of any significant religious community and bereft of meaningful values or culture. But this is not the case. Las Vegas has a large, healthy, and expanding religious community. Within the religious milieu, there is a strong and rapidly expanding pentecostal …

Napoleon Bonaparte coined the maxim; "The future destiny of the child is always the work of the parent" (Evans, 1971, p. 18). A parent plays a key part in the development and progression of a child. Consequently, children often adopt parental perceptions of the world around them. The college choice phenomenon is no exception; parents perform a critical role. The purpose of this study was to examine the role parents played in the college choice phenomenon. The study employed a qualitative research approach with a quantitative component to explore parental perceptions and the interrelated roles of parents, students, high school …

Effects Of Classwide Peer Tutoring (Cwpt) On Social Interactions Of Children With And Without English Proficiency, Yaoying Xu Jan 2003

Effects Of Classwide Peer Tutoring (Cwpt) On Social Interactions Of Children With And Without English Proficiency, Yaoying Xu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Learning and Education occur in social contexts. The quality of children's peer relationships is an important indication of children's current and later social adjustment. Children with peer problems tend to experience higher levels of loneliness and other undesirable affective consequences, including social dissatisfaction and worrying about peer relations. Because of the limited language proficiency and cultural and ethnic differences among children with LEP, some of their social behaviors are considered inappropriate by their non-LEP teachers and peers. On the other hand, children with LEP may feel that they do not fit in a group or class activity. As a result, …

These graphic organizers and activities were presented at a university in Northern Thailand through an advanced reading comprehension course for preservice and inservice teachers taught by the primary researcher. The second main purpose was to explore, synthesize, and apply theories of mediated activity and research methods originating from or …
