Predictors Of General Medical Use Among Individuals Seeking Therapy For Marital And Family Problems, Jacob D. Christenson

Theses and Dissertations

A number of studies have examined variables associated with medical use. However, most of the studies deal with samples that are not easily generalizable to other populations. In particular, no study is known to have looked at general medical use among people seeking services for marital and family problems. In this study, medical use of participants from the marriage and family therapy services at Brigham Young University Comprehensive Clinic was investigated to determine the best predictors of general medical use. Best subsets multiple linear regression showed that the best overall predictors of general medical use were anxiety and hostility.

Comparison Of A Quick Drinking Screen With The Timeline Followback For Individuals With Alcohol Problems, Linda C. Sobell, Sangeeta Agrawal, Mark B. Sobell, Gloria I. Leo, Lisa J. Young, John A. Cunningham, Edward R. Simco

Faculty Articles

Objective: Two major strategies have typically been used to assess recent drinking: (1) Daily Estimation (DE) measures such as the Timeline Followback (TLFB) and (2) Quantity-Frequency (QF) summary measures. Although QF measures provide a quick and easy measure of consumption, they have been criticized as not being able to capture sporadic and unpatterned drinking (e.g., days that reflect important social and/or health risks). The TLFB, a psychometrically sound drinking assessment method, is able to capture all drinking, including sporadic heavy days and unpatterned drinking. Medical Necessity In Private Health Plans: Implications For Behavioral Health Care, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Brian Kamoie, D. Richard Mauery, Brian Walitt

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This report addresses how the term "medical necessity" is defined in private health insurance coverage decisions. It summarizes a review of the literature, an extensive review of legal cases that challenge insurer decisions, materials prepared by the insurance industry, consultation with experts in the field, a review of investigations conducted by State departments of insurance and attorneys general, and interviews with health care executives regarding the decision-making process itself. The report does not explore factors that can affect access to care that might be considered clinically necessary by treating professionals or the effects of medical necessity decisions on therapeutic outcomes.
