The Ethics Of Service : A New Approach To Service Learning, Jonathan C. Zur Jan 2003

The Ethics Of Service : A New Approach To Service Learning, Jonathan C. Zur

Honors Theses

The new model of service presented in this paper gives a framework for considering the possibilities for ethically grounded service. It does not solve al I of the problems with competing interests or tradeoffs in wellbeing, but is a solid foundation upon which many important discussions can be based. By examining the continuum of self-interest, the discussion of intent, preparedness, and outcome, and consideration for mandatory service, the paper has offered a comprehensive assessment of the ethics of service. The four parties - the volunteer, the client, the university, and the service site - have particular responsibilities to their own …

A Woman's Climb Up The Law School Ladder, Autumn Mesa Jan 2003

A Woman's Climb Up The Law School Ladder, Autumn Mesa

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the challenges women face in law school, arguing that the hierarchical and male-dominated structure of legal education creates significant barriers for female students. It contends that women are disproportionately affected by the competitive and often hostile environment, which can lead to feelings of alienation, lower self-esteem, and a struggle to maintain their unique perspectives. The author advocates for systemic change in legal academia to create a more inclusive environment that values diversity and supports female success.

How Great Are "Great Books For Girls?" : An Examination Of Gender Messages In Recommended Literature For Adolescent Girls, Sandi Caldrone Jan 2003

How Great Are "Great Books For Girls?" : An Examination Of Gender Messages In Recommended Literature For Adolescent Girls, Sandi Caldrone

Honors Capstones

A number of booklists recommending novels that can help children expand their ideas of gender roles have been recently published, in part because of the recent attention paid to the drops in self-esteem and academic performance adolescent girls experience related to gender roles. I examined several of these booklists and a small sample of the novels they recommend. Although many of the recommended novels offered readers examples of nontraditional heroines, they also perpetuated gender bias to some degree. In order for literature to be an effective tool in changing children’s definitions of gender, parents, educators, and authors need to be …

Trading In Human Misery: A Human Rights Perspective On The Tampa Incident, Irene Khan Jan 2003

Trading In Human Misery: A Human Rights Perspective On The Tampa Incident, Irene Khan

Washington International Law Journal

The Tampa case does not stand in isolation. It is part of a wider pattern of restrictive asylum policies. To fully understand the significance of the Tampa case, one should go back more than two decades to the exodus of the Vietnamese boat people. Then, as now, boatloads of asylum seekers were pushed away, and refugees were detained on small islands, including, for example, Galang Island in Indonesia. Then, as now, many asylum seekers drowned as their calls of distress went unnoticed or unheeded. In response to this exodus, asylum, as a permanent solution to refugee problems, was diminished with …

The Failure Of Domestic And International Mechanisms To Redress The Harmful Effects Of Australian Immigration Detention, Adrienne D. Mcentee Jan 2003

The Failure Of Domestic And International Mechanisms To Redress The Harmful Effects Of Australian Immigration Detention, Adrienne D. Mcentee

Washington International Law Journal

Australia's Migration Act explicitly permits the government to detain non-citizens seeking entry without visas, including those who request asylum. Detainees wait up to five years for their immigration claims to be processed in detention centers managed by Australasian Correctional Management ("ACM"), a subsidiary of U.S. corporation Wackenhut Corrections. Arriving asylum-seekers often suffer the lasting effects of torture, threats of death, and other traumatic conditions-effects that are exacerbated by detention conditions. This Comment emphasizes detention's effects on children, who suffer health and other problems while detained. Detainees, Australian citizens, and overseas commentators are now protesting against the detention policy. The government's …

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Each February, competitors convene in Big Lake, Alaska, to participate in the “Iditasport Human Powered Ultra-Marathon”. Who would attempt this challenging race? Personality might be one factor predicting participation. Iditasport represents a unique athletic event with a distinctive social and psychological climate that might be reflected in the personalities of the participants in many ways. This study was designed to identify the personality profile of Iditasport athletes when compared to normative populations and to explore differences between athletes competing in different race divisions.

A Semiotic Approach To A Legal Definition Of Terrorism, Susan Tiefenbrun

No Woman Is An Object: Realizing The Feminist Collaborative Video, Alexandra Juhasz Jan 2003

No Woman Is An Object: Realizing The Feminist Collaborative Video, Alexandra Juhasz

Publications and Research

Feminist video does collectivity exceedingly well. Certainly other politicized cultural movements and individuals work through this method, and, of course, feminists also produce work in collaboration in film and other media (as Julia Lesage testifies above). However, I assert that there is a profound natural mechanics to women's work in video that makes the medium's method, theory, and theme the interactive and politicized subjectification of the female sex. Film and patriarchy share the project of women's objectification-they make victims. Video and feminism see women as complex, worthy selves-they produce subjects. In feminist collaboration: video, the medium (inexpensive, debased, nonprofessional), the …

"Some Of Us Are Learning Spanish And Some Of Us Are Learning English": A Comparison Of Second Language Programs In Texas, Lore Carrera-Carrillo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Dual language education programs are gaining momentum throughout the United States as exemplary means of educating both language minority and language majority students. There is considerable evidence that learning through the native language has many advantages for language minority students. Specifically, it allows them to gain important content knowledge in their native language that will make the English they encounter more comprehensible as they enhance their overall cognitive and social development. Additionally, dual language education facilitates the development of both basic and advanced literacy in two languages for language majority students; Research results demonstrate that dual language education programs can …

Brand Associations In The Tradeshow Industry: An Application Of The Service Brand Preference Model, Hwabong Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The tradeshow industry has become one of the most remarkable and rapid-growing markets in the hospitality industry. Tradeshows continue to be one of the most effective marketing tools and strategy mixes. There is no other medium that offers this multi-dimensional experience; Tradeshows have been the one of crown jewels of a company's marketing mix. There are well-known benefits of participating in tradeshows to do marketing and there are many tips and benefits for branding the exhibiting companies at the tradeshows. However, there are limited resources of branding the tradeshow itself from the organizer's perspective; The purpose of this study was …

Cognitive Functioning In Familial And Nonfamilial Groups At High-Risk For Schizophrenia, Erin L Warnick Jan 2003

Cognitive Functioning In Familial And Nonfamilial Groups At High-Risk For Schizophrenia, Erin L Warnick

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Differences in the cognitive profiles of schizophrenic individuals who are family history positive and those who are family history negative have been reported throughout the literature. The purpose of this study was to clarify the cognitive deficits that characterize familial and nonfamilial groups at high-risk for schizophrenia. High-risk was defined as (1) Genetic relatedness to an individual with schizophrenia, or (2) Extreme scores on a measure of schizotypy (i.e., Chapman Scales of Psychosis Proneness). Twenty-three subjects were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests. ANOVAs revealed a significant interaction effect on a measure of verbal learning and a double dissociation on …
