Instrumental And Expressive Violence: Motive For Women's Use Of Violence And Their Perception Of Their Partner's Use Of Violence, Lisa Claire Maisano Kennedy

Theses Digitization Project

In this study, we characterized the motivation for violence as instrumental, expressive, and self-defense. We learned that women perceive their own motivation for violence differently than they perceive their partner's motivation for violence, a form of self-defense, fighting back, and protecting themselves from harm. In contrast, women reported that their partner's motivation for violence was instrumental to get one's way, assert dominance, gain power, or to intimidate one's partner.

Staff Perspectives On The Experience Of A Problem-Based Learning Staff Development Module: Impact On Their Pedagogical Stance, Una Coleman

Theses

The current shift towards problem-based learning (PBL) internationally within higher education, and the transfer of some programmes within higher education in Ireland into PBL programmes, suggests that staff development needs to be a key component in any PBL implementation strategy. PBL radically transforms the roles and functions of both staff and student and challenges teachers’ beliefs and accompanying perceptions about the teaching and learning process. This study documents the impact of a PBL staff development programme on the participants and assesses the impact on their pedagogical stance.

The approach to this study was guided by my belief in the socially …

Organizing Madness: Psychiatric Nosology In Historical Perspective, Eric D. Jackson Jan 2003

Organizing Madness: Psychiatric Nosology In Historical Perspective, Eric D. Jackson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper traces the history of psychiatric nosology in the US from its origins in the early 19th century through the most recent revision of the standardized classification, DSM-IV TR. The evolution of nosology is found to be shaped not only by advances in knowledge, but also by socio-historic and professional trends. The initial impetus for systematic classification came from outside the mental health profession, but later revisions reflected intraprofessional struggles and experiences. Future revisions will almost certainly be prone to these same intra- and extraprofessional influences, and may see a dramatic shift away from symptomatology and towards an etiological …

The Vietnam Memorial: A Postmodern Reflection, Jonathan Boelkins Jan 2003

The Vietnam Memorial: A Postmodern Reflection, Jonathan Boelkins

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Complex in its cultural significance and entanglements, the Vietnam War is an event that continues to reverberate with social dissonance. The Vietnam Memorial (Maya Lin) sustains multiple, often oppositional, debates surrounding the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Memorial: A Postmodern Reflection examines the significance of the memorial with regard to American cultural history. The physical experience of the memorial-the decisive yet subtle geometry, the polished black marble, the chronological listing of names, and the scarring of the ground plane-is described with particular focus on the bond between material and social "reflection." This paper utilizes the Vietnam Memorial to discuss architecture's ability …

A Theology Of Ministerial Practice, Paul Kelm Jan 2003

A Theology Of Ministerial Practice, Paul Kelm

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Competing agendas and changing culture create a need for churches to consciously determine why they will do what they do the way they do.

This project develops four doctrinal bases for a theology of ministerial practice. It summarizes literature on philosophy of ministry. Research in five Lutheran churches identifies gaps in the way people view ministry. Chapter four provides a comprehensive rationale and definition for a theology of ministerial practice.

One church's experience demonstrates the value of thinking through and developing "guiding principles" that apply a church's theology to its culture in shaping ministerial practice.

Crisis Uncertainty: A Nation Living In Fear After The Attack On America-War On Terrorism, Sakile Kai Camara, Tei Street Jan 2003

Crisis Uncertainty: A Nation Living In Fear After The Attack On America-War On Terrorism, Sakile Kai Camara, Tei Street

Iowa Journal of Communication

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, 13 focus groups were conducted utilizing a structured focus group protocol for 53 individuals. The uncertain experiences among respondents illustrated how individuals reached into themselves and out to others to understand their specified needs at their time of need. Findings suggested that international students connected past social and historical events to the 9/11 attacks, perceptions of 9/11 led to: causal explanations, security fears, and developed patriotism. Additionally, cultural profiling emerged as worldviews of the cultural other shifted in interactions, and the primary sources for reducing uncertainty were forms of media.

Custody And Visitation: Considerations For Every Attorney Retained By A Survivor Of Domestic Violence, Caitlin Glass, Tamara Kuennen, Sharon Lopez Jan 2003

Custody And Visitation: Considerations For Every Attorney Retained By A Survivor Of Domestic Violence, Caitlin Glass, Tamara Kuennen, Sharon Lopez

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Legal representation is a critical tool for survivors of domestic violence to live free from their battering partners. Representation in custody and visitation matters-- integral issues in the separation context--is particularly consequential for survivors. First, studies of custody litigation indicate that fathers who battered the mothers of their children are twice as likely to seek sole physical custody as are nonviolent fathers. Batterers are as likely as nonbattering fathers to prevail. Since the 1970s, fathers in general have been at a marked advantage in custody disputes. Second, custody and visitation claims involve a complex array of legal issues, laws, practices, …
