False Starts, Suspicious Interviewees And Nearly Impossible Tasks: Some Reflections On The Difficulty Of Conducting Field Research Abroad, Larry D. Hubbell Jun 2003

False Starts, Suspicious Interviewees And Nearly Impossible Tasks: Some Reflections On The Difficulty Of Conducting Field Research Abroad, Larry D. Hubbell

The Qualitative Report

In this article, I discuss some of the problems I have encountered in conducting field research abroad, specifically in England, South Africa, Russia and China - a broad variety of societies ranging from free to not free societies. I discuss the problems I encountered and how I overcame some of them and was stymied by others. I have had problems gaining access to interviewees; establishing rapport with interviewees from different societies; and have had my motives questioned. Nevertheless, my research has been rewarding and has resulted in a number of serendipitous discoveries.

Beginning On-Line Delphi Ethnographic Research: The Bolder Method, Jeffrey K. Edwards

The Qualitative Report

The use of the Internet to gather data, produce and report research has changed the face of the fields of education and research. This paper will present a method for combining electronic on-line media and Delphi methodology to begin the process of ethnographic research with participant inclusion, informed consent, data gathering by discourse facilitation, and preparation for coding. The use of a reflecting team by the research group provides impetus for second round responses by participants. Methods, format, a case study and an evaluation of the process will be presented.

Confessions Of A (Somewhat) Reluctant Consultant: Or, What Happens When Academic Dreams Go "Poof", Lawrence Hammar Jun 2003

Confessions Of A (Somewhat) Reluctant Consultant: Or, What Happens When Academic Dreams Go "Poof", Lawrence Hammar

The Qualitative Report

This essay really is about a protracted and painful transition from academic and teacher to consultant and researcher, but first, I want to get a few things off my chest. If you can stand some wholly relevant whine at the outset, stay with me, but if not, just skip to the third section.

Dare I Embark On A Field Study? Toward An Understanding Of Field Studies, Yan Xiao, Paul Milgram Jun 2003

Dare I Embark On A Field Study? Toward An Understanding Of Field Studies, Yan Xiao, Paul Milgram

The Qualitative Report

Field studies have frequently been advocated as a means for understanding cognitive activities in naturalistic settings. However, there are several fundamental obstacles that one has to overcome to conduct a field study. This paper discusses two of these obstacles in the context of studying problem solving in complex environments: defining goals of a field study and justifying methods used in data analysis. Based on our experience from a recently finished field study, we outline a framework for understanding the nature of field studies and suggest a specific approach to data analysis. We argue that the goal of field studies should …

"We're Just Friends": Myth Construction As A Communication Strategy In Maintaining Cross-Sex Friendships, Vickie Harvey Jun 2003

"We're Just Friends": Myth Construction As A Communication Strategy In Maintaining Cross-Sex Friendships, Vickie Harvey

The Qualitative Report

The main goal of this research is to present a narrative description and identify categorical myths of cross-sex friendship in order to more fully understand the romance challenge confronting women and men in friendship. Closer examination into the challenges confronting cross-sex friends through narratives generate insight into the process of communication and interpretation of how friends construct, change and sustain their reality of their friendship. Current research suggests that cross-sex friendships differ from same-sex friendships (Werking, 1997). Respondents were 120 college students from a Midwest college and a West Coast college attending communication classes between 2000-2002. Respondents kept a journal …

Crystallization Of Sunflower Oil Waxes, Silvana Martini, M. C. Anon Jun 2003

Crystallization Of Sunflower Oil Waxes, Silvana Martini, M. C. Anon

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Activation free energies of nucleation (ΔG c ) were calculated using induction times of crystallization measurements. Results showed that ΔG c decreased exponentially as wax concentration increased at a constant crystallization temperature (T c ). In contrast, for a constant supersaturation, ΔG c increased from 12 to 22°C but decreased between 22 and 35°C. Melting behavior of purified waxes and solutions of purified waxes in sunflower oil were studied by DSC after crystallization at fast and slow cooling rates (20 and 1°C/min, respectively). Low supercooling temperatures (T c >65°C) showed an increase in the onset temperature (T 0 ) as …

A Research Agenda For Political Personality And Leadership Studies: An Evolutionary Proposal, Aubrey Immelman, Theodore Millon Jun 2003

A Research Agenda For Political Personality And Leadership Studies: An Evolutionary Proposal, Aubrey Immelman, Theodore Millon

Psychology Faculty Publications

Despite major neuroscientific advances in the past two decades and parallel conceptual refinement in evolutionary theory, personality-in-politics inquiry remains adrift, divorced from these broader spheres of scientific knowledge. This paper reviews the neurobiological substrates of three major domains of evolutionary biology and behavioral ecology relevant to political personality assessment and the psychological examination of political leaders; furnishes a context and set of guiding ideas to revitalize the study of the person as biopsychosocial entity in politics; advances a generative theory of personality and political leadership performance; and proposes an agenda for advancing personality-in-politics and leadership inquiry, informed by insights derived …

The Demand Of New Cars And The Index Of Consumer Sentiment, Siddharta Utama Jun 2003

The Demand Of New Cars And The Index Of Consumer Sentiment, Siddharta Utama

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The index of consumer sentiment (ICS) has been widely employed as a proxy for future buying confidence to predict future aggregate buying behavior. This study empirically compares two forecast models: the expectation model that includes the ICS as an explanatory variable and the traditional model that does not include the ICS. The models are employed to estimate the aggregate demand for new cars in the U.S. from 1976 to 1984. The results indicate that the ICS has a positive relation with new car sales. On the basis of the likelihood dominance criterion, however, the traditional model is preferred to the …

How Does Courseware's Design Affect Learners' Cognitive-Strategy, Sri Hartati R. Suradijono Jun 2003

How Does Courseware's Design Affect Learners' Cognitive-Strategy, Sri Hartati R. Suradijono

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

The emergence of the computer as an aid to education, with its unlimited range of instructional control options available to designer and user supports the vast development of coursewares. Hundreds of coursewares, aim to increase learners’ learning outcomes were developed. However, to have a courseware fits with learners’ characteristics many issues need to be explored. Referring to Resnick’s (1989) definition of learning as knowledge construction, it is critical for coursewares to support learners in the process of acquiring, retaining, and retrieving different kinds of knowledge and performance. In acquiring, retaining, and retrieving information learners use procedures known as cognitive strategies. …

The Qualitative Investigation Of The Social Construction Of Female Sexuality Within A Sexualized Work Environment, Christi L. Young Jun 2003

The Qualitative Investigation Of The Social Construction Of Female Sexuality Within A Sexualized Work Environment, Christi L. Young

Masters Theses

This qualitative investigation seeks to identify the sociocultural determinants and psychoemotional ramifications of essentialist gender role socialization on female employees in a sexualized work environment (SWE). Sexualized work environments incorporate work and sexuality and exist on a continuum according to the frequency and intensity of the sexual economic exchange that takes place within them. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten female employees at a comedy club to explore the social construction of female sexuality in such an environment. Subjects commented on the various advantages and disadvantages of working in a SWE as well as on general issues …

Evaluating Task-Interspersal Outcomes With Children Diagnosed With Autism: Systematic And Direct Replications, Ivy M. Chong Jun 2003

Evaluating Task-Interspersal Outcomes With Children Diagnosed With Autism: Systematic And Direct Replications, Ivy M. Chong

Masters Theses

This study sought to replicate findings by Charlop et al. (1992) in which presenting the same consequences for maintenance (previously learned tasks) and nonacquired tasks was found to stagnate learning on nonacquired tasks during task interspersal. Initially, we conducted a systematic replication (Study I). However, presenting the same consequences for maintenance and nonacquired tasks did not appear to stagnate learning for our participants. All participants reached mastery criterion for the nonacquired vocal task during baseline and two of three participants reached mastery criterion for the nonacquired motor task during baseline. Subsequently, we conducted a direct replication (Study 2). Again, all …

Converting Evidence Into Data: The Use Of Law Enforcement Archives As Unobtrusive Measurement, David Canter, Laurence J. Alison Jun 2003

Converting Evidence Into Data: The Use Of Law Enforcement Archives As Unobtrusive Measurement, David Canter, Laurence J. Alison

The Qualitative Report

The newly emerging area of Investigative Psychology provides a behavioural science basis for crime detection by examining investigative processes and criminal behaviour. It draws upon a range of material collected by law enforcement agencies that is not widely utilized in the social sciences. This may be regarded as a form of non-reactive, unobtrusive data that has many of the advantages originally promoted by Webb, Campbell, Schwartz and Sechrest (1966) and more recently explored by Lee (2000). The value of such data, derived from police sources, has been demonstrated in a variety of Investigative Psychology studies. However, law enforcement material is …

Corpi, Murakami, And Contemporary Hardboiled Fiction, Cathy Steblyk Jun 2003

Corpi, Murakami, And Contemporary Hardboiled Fiction, Cathy Steblyk

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "Corpi, Murakami, and Contemporary Hardboiled Fiction," Cathy Steblyk discusses comparatively texts by contemporary detective fiction writers, one an ethnic-minority US-American and the other Japanese. Steblyk proposes that in detective fiction since the late 1980s, morally or ethically contestable sites of history have been given a postmortem by contemporary authors who are interested in restoring the lost parts of cultural histories. Detective fictions by feminist US-Chicana author Lucha Corpi and Japanese writer Murakami Haruki show how recent fiction from around the globe uses the hardboiled genre for the purposes of exploring past injustices and offering revisionist histories. The …

Science, Sexuality, And The Novels Of Huxley And Houellebecq, Angela C. Holzer Jun 2003

Science, Sexuality, And The Novels Of Huxley And Houellebecq, Angela C. Holzer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Science, Sexuality, and the Novels of Huxley and Houellebecq," Angela C. Holzer begins with an introduction to recent discourse about contemporary culture by Francis Fukuyama, notably in his book Our Posthuman Future (2001). Next, Holzer introduces twentieth-century literary representations of genetic engineering. Focusing on Huxley's Brave New World (1932) and on Houellebecq's Les Particules élémentaires (1998), Holzer discusses differences in "utopian" literature when linked to metaphysical aspects of reproduction and that are owing to changes in the life sciences and medicine. Further, Holzer explores the implications for poetics resulting from scientific developments and relates Houellebecq's perspectives to …

Toxic Torts And The Fear Of Cancer: Who Should Be Compensated For Emotional Distress? Dodge V. Cotter Corporation, Susan Johnson Jun 2003

Toxic Torts And The Fear Of Cancer: Who Should Be Compensated For Emotional Distress? Dodge V. Cotter Corporation, Susan Johnson

Student Thesis Honors (1996-2008)

Many courts have yet to address whether an individual suffering from the fear of contracting cancer can recover. New Mexico, unlike Colorado, has yet to encounter such a case. Over the past five decades toxic contamination from chemical releases has affected many people in numerous ways. The Love canal is one of the first and one of the most infamous incidents of toxic contamination. The Rocky Mountain States, and in particular, New Mexico, have had very few, if any, tort cases resulting from toxic pollutants. In New Mexico, the two most recent cases that have resulted from a toxic release, …

Community Standards Of Utah And The Amish Country Rule The World Wide Web - Ashcroft V. Aclu, The, Matthew Towns Jun 2003

Community Standards Of Utah And The Amish Country Rule The World Wide Web - Ashcroft V. Aclu, The, Matthew Towns

Missouri Law Review

Challengers of the Child Online Protection Act, a recently enacted federal law prohibiting the posting of materials harmful to children on the Internet, contended that regional community standards should not govern such a broad-based medium. The United States Supreme Court held, however, that the statutory language mandating application of regional community standards in judging Internet content did not run contrary to the First Amendment. This Note supports the continued use of the Miller obscenity test, including its community standards criteria, but endorses the position taken by the concurring Justices that, in the case the Internet, the test should apply national …

Care Management For Persistent Pain: An Introduction, Christine W. Hartmann, Neil I. Goldfarb, Susan S. Kim, Bhaskar R. Nuthulaganti, Raafat Seifeldin Jun 2003

Care Management For Persistent Pain: An Introduction, Christine W. Hartmann, Neil I. Goldfarb, Susan S. Kim, Bhaskar R. Nuthulaganti, Raafat Seifeldin

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Persistent pain is a frequently occurring condition with significant economic, clinical, and humanistic implications, for both individuals and society. Current literature, however, points to unresolved issues with regard to its identification, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, and a number of suggestions have been made for improving the quality of care for pain sufferers. Because persistent pain shares many of the salient features of other chronic conditions such as diabetes and congestive heart failure, it is reasonable to believe that the adoption of a coordinated approach to care management could substantially improve the quality of care. Several strategiesincluding identification, appropriate referral, education, …

Cultural And Psychological Influences On Diabetic Adherence, Keikilani Mcmillin-Williams Jun 2003

Cultural And Psychological Influences On Diabetic Adherence, Keikilani Mcmillin-Williams

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Diabetes mellitus is a serious disease that poses a particular healthcare challenge because progression is considered controllable (Cox, et al, 1985; Vinicor, et al, 1996) yet treatment adherence, and thus outcome, is very poor (Gonder-Frederick, Cox, & Ritterband, 2002; Goodall, 1991). Culture is a lethal risk factor for diabetic contraction and treatment maintenance. Latinos within the United States are two-to-three times more likely to develop complications and die than non-Latinos (Haffner et al, 1996; Rubin, Peyrot, & Saudek, 1991) and are less likely to adhere to treatment (Lipton, Losey, Giachello, Mendez, & Girotti, 1998). Efforts to eliminate health disparities have …

Long-Term Almond Supplementation: Effects On Diet, Eating Patterns, And Satiety In Free-Living Healthy Individuals, Karen Jaceldo-Siegl

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Because of the growing evidence of the cardio protective effect of nuts, examining the potential of nuts as a healthy food choice for the larger population should be considered. The purpose of this 12-month crossover study was to evaluate the impact on diet, eating patterns, and satiety of supplementing a self-selected diet (with little or no nuts) with ~52 g of almonds in free-living healthy males (43) and females (38) between the ages 25 and 70 years. The first six months constituted the control period where subjects followed their habitual diet (HD). During the intervention (second 6 months), subjects were …

Pre-Exercise Fueling And Endurance: Effect Of A Pre-Exercise Almond-Raisin Beverage Versus A Commercial Sports Beverage On Performance In Trained Male Runners, Wendy N. Bazilian Jun 2003

Pre-Exercise Fueling And Endurance: Effect Of A Pre-Exercise Almond-Raisin Beverage Versus A Commercial Sports Beverage On Performance In Trained Male Runners, Wendy N. Bazilian

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Aside from genetics and training, no factor plays as important a role in exercise performance as nutrition. What athletes consume before exercise longer than 60 min influences fuel use, perceived exertion (RPE), heart rate (HR) and time-to-exhaustion (TE). Ingesting carbohydrates (CHO) before exercise can delay exhaustion over placebo, but less is known about combinations of CHO and fat on fuel use and endurance. To date, there are few studies that systematically explore nutritious, whole food products like nuts and dried fruits as pre-exercise fuel sources for endurance exercise.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 2 …
