The Sophie Digital Library Of Early Women's Research: A Blueprint For Mentored Undergraduate Online Research, Blaine Hill Evanson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The ongoing problem of providing undergraduate students the real experience of research to prepare them for graduate school and careers has found a possible solution in mentored research. Additionally, online dissemination of research provides opportunities for mentored research to reach a wide audience without the barriers of traditional publishing. Important in this process is assuring the relevance of student research which requires a topic the student both enjoys and excels at. Students benefit from this research with a customized curriculum, where they are able to contribute to academia and strengthen their resume. Through my work on the Sophie project, I …

The State Of Domestic Violence Protective Orders In Hidalgo County, Texas, Cindy Noel Berner Jun 2003

The State Of Domestic Violence Protective Orders In Hidalgo County, Texas, Cindy Noel Berner

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Domestic violence has long been an issue for the criminal justice system and society. Despite decades of research, activism, and intervention programs, much remains to be accomplished. There are many facets to studying domestic violence. However, there are few studies that specifically deal with protective orders and what, if any, effect they have on the occurrence of domestic violence. The goal of this researcher was to discover whether there were any relationships between variables such as age, gender, and employment status and the decision to not issue a protective order. The data used in this study were obtained from the …

Steamboat Passenger Ferries In Nineteenth Century London: A Cultural Survey, Jennifer Wohlberg Jun 2003

Steamboat Passenger Ferries In Nineteenth Century London: A Cultural Survey, Jennifer Wohlberg

Masters Theses

Traditionally, steamboats and their history have belonged to the area of antiquarians. Many sources in my bibliography focus on the design and use of the boats and neglect the social and cultural impact the boats had on mid-Victorian London life. Steamboats, however, were an important transportation system in mid-Victorian London, so that a study of steamboats can provide an insight into mid-Victorian times. In this thesis, I will place steamboat design construction and use in the context of the social and cultural worlds of mid-Victorian London and the River Thames.

The results of my research yielded a thesis describing the …

Exploring The Physician’S Processes: Diagnosing Autism, Gwennyth Li Sze Palafox Jun 2003

Exploring The Physician’S Processes: Diagnosing Autism, Gwennyth Li Sze Palafox

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Physicians are customarily the first point of contact for parents who are concerned about a child’s development. Thus, it is important for physicians to be current and educated about childhood disorders and subsequent treatment for those disorders. Recently, empirical evidence has led to the proposal of early indicators of autism supporting that autism may be diagnosed accurately in children less than three years old. Furthermore, formal screening and assessment parameters developed by medical organizations have been proposed in order to identify autism as early as possible (American Academy of Neurology, 2000). While the proposed parameters and empirical evidence support early …

Hormonal Assessment Of Sexual Maturation In Four Captive Lowland Gorilla Males, Anna Bellisari, Jeffrey French

Psychology Faculty Publications

Monozygotic twins Mosuba and Macombo were born at the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo in 1983. During their first year, weight and skeletal growth indicators were virtually identical. The twins lived together continuously until age 7, when they were permanently separated. Mosuba joined a group of males and elderly, non-breeding females in the Henry Doorly Zoo of Omaha, Nebraska. He sired an infant by artificial insemination at age 12. At age 16, Mosuba had the appearance of a fully mature silverback, with prominent sagittal and nuchal crests and typical large body size, consistent with his age.

The Mommy Track: The Consequences Of Gender Ideology And Aspirations On Age At First Motherhood, Jennifer Stewart Jun 2003

The Mommy Track: The Consequences Of Gender Ideology And Aspirations On Age At First Motherhood, Jennifer Stewart

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

While there is extensive and compelling evidence that growing up in an impoverished background leads to early fertility, few studies explain why early socioeconomic disadvantage leads to early childbearing. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, I test whether gender ideology, as well as educational and occupational aspirations, mediates the connection between poverty and teen fertility patterns. Traditional gender ideology depresses age at first motherhood. Adolescent aspirations appear to act as protective factors in the production of early pregnancy.

The First Four Months In A New Foster Placement: Psychosocial Adjustment, Parental Contact And Placement Disruption, James G. Barber, Paul H. Delfabbro

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Intake and four-month follow-up measures were obtained for 235 children referred into a new foster care placement over a 12-month period in the Australian State of South Australia. Twenty-five percent of the sample returned home within 4-months, and for those who remained in care throughout, there had been modest gains in behavior, psychological adjustment and adjustment at school. On the other hand, there were considerable levels of placement disruption, a high degree of non-compliance with parental visiting plans, and a high proportion of children fell outside ninety-five percent confidence intervals for the general adolescent population on most well-being measures, particularly …

Are Asian Thinking Styles Different? Acculturation And Thinking Styles In A Chinese-Canadian Population, Jenny M. Tang Jun 2003

Are Asian Thinking Styles Different? Acculturation And Thinking Styles In A Chinese-Canadian Population, Jenny M. Tang

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This research examined the theory of mental self-government and its various thinking styles. The theory of mental self-government (Sternberg, 1988a) has established its utility in verbal contexts including education, occupation, partner choices, and cross-culturally. The Associated Thinking Style Inventory (TSI; Sternberg & Wagner, 1991; 1992) has also demonstrated its reliability and validity in a Hong Kong population (Zhang, 1999; Zhang & Lcks, 1997; Zhang & Sternberg, 1998), but it has not been used with Chinese-Canadians. It was hypothesized that as Chinese individuals become more acculturated to the North American cultural system, their thinking styles approach European-American norms. This study found …

Getting Connected: How Sociologists Can Access The High Tech Élite, Trond Arne Undheim Jun 2003

Getting Connected: How Sociologists Can Access The High Tech Élite, Trond Arne Undheim

The Qualitative Report

Élite studies have been relatively neglected in the qualitative methods literature (Coleman, 1996, p. 336; Hertz & Imber, 1995) . As a consequence, the interview methods literature in the social sciences does not adequately address the issue of access to élite interviews. Nor does it address the élite interview process itself (Breakwell, Hammond, & Fife-Schaw, 1995; Brenner, Brown, & Canter, 1985; Crabtree & Miller, 1992; Fog, 1994; Fowler & Mangione, 1990; McCracken , 1988; Stewart & Cash, 1997; Sudman & Bradburn, 1982; Weiss, 1994) . Despite its élite sample (scientists, engineers, policy- makers) the science and technology studies (STS) community …

The Researcher As Autobiographer: Analysing Data Written About Oneself, Colleen Tenni, Anne Smith, Carlene Boucher Jun 2003

The Researcher As Autobiographer: Analysing Data Written About Oneself, Colleen Tenni, Anne Smith, Carlene Boucher

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores some of the issues that arise when one is dealing with data that has been produced by the researcher about their own experience. In particular, we are interested in exploring the ways that researchers can go about analyzing autobiographical data. Many researchers produce data that is autobiographical. Ethnographers produce field notes. Action Researchers often write about their own practice. Phenomenologists, sociologists and historians may write narratives that are autobiographical. There is a growing trend for researchers working in a range of settings to view themselves simultaneously being both a subject (or the subject) and a researcher. Data …

The Potential Role Of Spirituality In Conducting Field Research: Examination Of A Model And A Process, Michael Maher Jun 2003

The Potential Role Of Spirituality In Conducting Field Research: Examination Of A Model And A Process, Michael Maher

The Qualitative Report

The Cognitive-Experiential Tri-Circle is a model developed by the author to explain the relationship between conducting field research and reflecting on beliefs, including spiritual beliefs. His sample included graduate students, faculty, and friends of the university who participated in field research trips to Cuba through Loyola University Chicago. The basic assumption of the model is that "self," "beliefs," and "experience" are related in such a way that "depth" applies to each equally in a field research experience. Depth of experience for the self leads to depth of belief for the self . Reflection tools that encourage depth of belief for …
