An Operational Measure Of Physician Lifelong Learning: Its Development, Components And Preliminary Psychometric Data, Mohammadreza Hojat, Thomas J. Nasca, James B. Erdmann, Anthony J. Frisby, Jon J. Veloski, Joseph S. Gonnella

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

Despite the emphasis placed on physicians’ lifelong learning, no psychometrically sound instrument has been developed to provide an operational measure of the concept and its components among physicians. The authors designed this study to develop a tool for measuring physician lifelong learning, to identify its underlying components and to assess its psychometric properties. A 37-item questionnaire was developed, based on a review of literature and the results of two pilot studies. Psychometric analyses of the responses of 160 physicians identified 19 items that were included in the Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning. Factor analysis of the 19 items showed …

Use Of Neutral Fact-Finding To Preserve Exclusive Rights And Uphold The Disclosure Purpose Of The Patent System, Brian Panka

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This comment proposes the use of neutral fact-finding as a precursor to litigation of patent disputes. Section II begins with a brief introduction to the concept of patents and the system used in the United States for granting and protecting exclusive rights associated with patent grants. Then, Section III discusses traditional ADR processes available to resolve patent disputes and sets forth reasons those processes are not widely used. Finally, Section IV offers neutral factfinding as a solution to both litigation and traditional ADR process concerns with respect to resolving patent disputes

The Effect Of Cooperative Learning And Traditional Instruction On The Spelling Performance Of Third Grade Students, Tracey Patella Jul 2003

The Effect Of Cooperative Learning And Traditional Instruction On The Spelling Performance Of Third Grade Students, Tracey Patella

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of cooperative learning and traditional instruction on the spelling test performance of twenty-six third grade students from a southern New Jersey school district. It was hypothesized that students who were taught using cooperative learning strategies during spelling instruction would score significantly higher on their weekly spelling post-tests than students who were taught using traditional spelling instruction.

A one group, pretest/posttest, pre-experimental design was utilized to determine whether students who are randomly grouped in cooperative learning pairs will have higher achievement levels in spelling than students who are taught using traditional …

Black Enclaves Of Violence: Race And Homicide In Great Plains Cities, 1890-1920, Clare V. Mckanna Jr. Jul 2003

Black Enclaves Of Violence: Race And Homicide In Great Plains Cities, 1890-1920, Clare V. Mckanna Jr.

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

These killings, occurring three years apart in Coffeyville, Kansas, offer bookend images of interracial homicides in the Great Plains. In the first shooting, Charles Vann, a black man and the victim, had been drinking at Walnut and Eleventh Streets in the "tenderloin" district, a black neighborhood in Coffeyville. This region, near the railroad yards, provided entertainment for black customers and occasionally whites in saloons, brothels, and gambling parlors. William Rodecker, a white male horse trader, had just arrived from Missouri and started drinking heavily in this area. About 8 P.M. Rodecker accosted Vann at the corner of Twelfth and Walnut …

Review Of Women In Higher Education An Encyclopedia. Ana M. Martinez Aleman And Kristen A. Renn, Editors., Jean M. Haar Jul 2003

Review Of Women In Higher Education An Encyclopedia. Ana M. Martinez Aleman And Kristen A. Renn, Editors., Jean M. Haar

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Women have constituted a majority of students in American colleges and universities since 1979. Women earned more than half of all associates, bachelors and masters degrees and more than one-third of all doctorates (Touchton & Davis, 1991). Even with these numbers, the study of women in higher education has often been overlooked (Glazer, Bensimon, & Townsend, 1993). Women in Higher Education: An Encyclopedia atones for overlooking "almost entirely women's role as shapers and interpreters of the academy" (Glazer et al., p. ix). The editors have created a comprehensive source of information and resources related to women in higher education in …

Court Review: Volume 40, Issue 2 - Judicial Report On The Adjudication And Sanctioning Of Hard-Core Drinking Drivers, Robyn Robertson, Herb Simpson

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Impaired driving is the most frequently committed crime in America. It has been an issue of debate and concern for the judiciary, as courtrooms across the country hear cases involving a majority of the 1.4 million annual DWI arrests. Since the early 1980s, concerned citizens have lobbied for and won considerable changes to the way these cases are approached from a public-policy perspective, often resulting in legislative initiatives and changes in criminal practice. Until now, however, little comprehensive research has been conducted on the implications of these system-wide changes for criminal justice professionals.

In December 2002, the Traffic Injury Research …

The Effect Of An Unconscious Auditory Stimulus On Pilot Performance Under Varying Instrument Flying Conditions, Christina Eleni Christakou Jul 2003

The Effect Of An Unconscious Auditory Stimulus On Pilot Performance Under Varying Instrument Flying Conditions, Christina Eleni Christakou

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Human error remains a significant contributing factor with respect to accidents in civil air transportation. It is therefore crucial to establish avenues by which performance on the flightdeck can be enhanced under conditions of distress. The purpose of this study was to examine whether an unconscious auditory stimulus (UAS) could enhance pilot performance under varying instrument flight (IFR) conditions on the aircraft flightdeck. Forty IFR student pilots underwent two eight-minute simulated flights, whereupon they were presented with different IFR weather conditions. During the trial, the experimental group listened to a UAS, whereas the control group listened to white noise (WN). …

Exit Routes From Welfare: Examining Barriers To Employment, Demographic And Human Capital Factors, Colleen Heflin Jul 2003

Exit Routes From Welfare: Examining Barriers To Employment, Demographic And Human Capital Factors, Colleen Heflin

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper investigates how barriers to employment, human capital, and demographic characteristics affect women’s exit routes off welfare. Specifically, I address two questions. First, what are the avenues through which women leave welfare? Second, are mental and physical health problems, domestic violence, and lack of access to transportation, characteristics that have been ignored in other studies of welfare dynamics, associated with different welfare exit routes? Using multinomial logistic regression and data from the Women’s Employment Survey, this project examines the specific exit route chosen in detail and goes beyond general dynamics associated with welfare exit in order to capture the …

(Mis)Conceptions: Unjust Limitations On Legally Unmarried Women's Access To Reproductive Technology And Their Use Of Known Doners, Justyn Lezin Jul 2003

(Mis)Conceptions: Unjust Limitations On Legally Unmarried Women's Access To Reproductive Technology And Their Use Of Known Doners, Justyn Lezin

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The use of assisted reproductive technologies has vastly increased over the last twenty years. However, legally unmarried women may find that their options are severely limited compared to heterosexual married women. Through excessive physician discretion and a lack of legal protections, legally unmarried women are frequently barred from using their preferred options for conception. Legally unmarried women should be entitled to the full range of reproductive technologies to which married couples enjoy access. States should pass legislation to allow sperm donors and recipients to bar future acknowledgement of paternity and public accommodations laws to bar physician discrimination against legally unmarried …

Stock Options And Child Support: The Price Of Accuracy, Susan Isard Jul 2003

Stock Options And Child Support: The Price Of Accuracy, Susan Isard

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Stock options present difficult problems for family law judges attempting to value parents' wealth for the purpose of creating an equitable child support order. Because markets fluctuate and the value of options before they are exercised and sold is speculative, they do not fit neatly into child support systems. Consequently, appellate courts in several states have struggled with two issues: First, whether a noncustodial parent's stock options should rightly factor into his or her child support obligation. Second, if stock options are relevant, how they should be valued. As courts wrestle with these questions, there is another important non-financial consideration …

Criminal Law Sanctuaries, Wayne A. Logan Jul 2003

Criminal Law Sanctuaries, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

The paper explores the existence of various social institutions that have resisted the reach of criminal law enforcement authority over time. Focusing on the response of the Catholic Church to widespread clergy sexual abuse, which in many respects reflects the practice of sanctuary in the European middle ages, as well as the historic resistance of families and corporations to criminal law authority, the paper discusses the reasons underlying the phenomenon of sanctuaries, and offers insights into how criminal wrongdoing might best be addressed therein.

The Effect Of Hardiness On The Relationship Between Stress And Well-Being: Moderator, Mediator, Or Both?, Alison Jo Donnell Jul 2003

The Effect Of Hardiness On The Relationship Between Stress And Well-Being: Moderator, Mediator, Or Both?, Alison Jo Donnell

Doctoral Dissertations

Stress, and particularly its negative impact on health; is an important concern to society. Most research, however, has found the magnitude of the relationship between stress and well-being to be moderate, indicating that people's reaction to stress can be varied (Dohrenwend & Dohrenwend, 1981). These results have led researchers to question what factors influence a person's response to stress and to investigate individual differences as potential intervening factors between stress and well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a model of hardiness on the relationship between stress and both physical and mental well-being. Research has …

Out With The Old And In With The New: An Analysis Of Illinois Maintenance Law Under The Uniform Marriage And Divorce Act And A Proposal For Its Replacement, Megan A. Drefchinski Jul 2003

Out With The Old And In With The New: An Analysis Of Illinois Maintenance Law Under The Uniform Marriage And Divorce Act And A Proposal For Its Replacement, Megan A. Drefchinski

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Perhaps few issues in family law, or in legal jurisprudence generally, are debated as widely and heatedly as maintenance is. Opinions on the subject cover the full range of the spectrum, from the suggestion that maintenance should be limited, to the suggestion that it should be expanded. What does emerge as a unifying theme is the general dissatisfaction of scholars, litigants, practitioners, and judges with the current maintenance law provisions under the Uniform Marriage and Divorce Act ("UMDA"), which Illinois has adopted This comment argues that this dissatisfaction with the current maintenance provisions cannot be overcome, and that new provisions …
