Evaluation Of A Whole-Class Token Economy To Manage Disruptive Behavior In Preschool Classrooms, Holly A. Filcheck Aug 2003

Evaluation Of A Whole-Class Token Economy To Manage Disruptive Behavior In Preschool Classrooms, Holly A. Filcheck

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The behavior of children in a preschool classroom was assessed to evaluate the effectiveness of two classroom management approaches: (a) strategies already employed by the teachers, and (b) the Level System. Strategies already employed by the teachers were those that they currently used in their preschool classroom. This phase was considered the baseline or "A" treatment phase. The Level System is a new program that utilizes strategies including a token economy, stimulating rewards, strategic attention, and labeled praise to manage a range of behaviors exhibited by children in the classroom. This was considered the "B" treatment condition. These two approaches …

Results indicated instructors' message variables were not significantly related to students LO/GO, no significant differences among …

Love, Labor And Life: Existence Through A Neo-Surrealist Style, Manuel Saenz Jr. Aug 2003

Love, Labor And Life: Existence Through A Neo-Surrealist Style, Manuel Saenz Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The artistic work explained in this paper reflects imaginative ideas, consisting of meticulous work in a variety of media: pen and ink, oil paint, and steel. The creative process used to produce my works is based on both psychological and physical levels. Psychologically, I reflected and depended on dreams from the past to capture images from my sub-conscience. The importance of industrial symbolism and how it was chosen and strategically placed in the work aided me to deal with my preoccupation with death, a tradition that stems from my Hispanic roots, such as observing the Mexican holiday: Day of the …

The Teenage Inventory Of Social Skills: Reliability And Validity Of The Spanish Translation, Cándido J. Inglés, María D. Hidalgo, F. Xavier Méndez, Heidi M. Inderbitzen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Peer relationships play a critical role in the development of social skills and personal feelings essential for personal growth and life-long adjustment (Hansen, Nangle, & Meyer, 1998), and are a key factor in the development of personal identity and independence from the family circle (Mayseless, Wiseman, & Hai, 1998). Children and adolescents who are popular or accepted by their peers receive more social reinforcement, which improves their adaptation, not only in social areas but also in personal and school ones (Inderbitzen, Walters, & Bukowski, 1997; La Greca & Lopez, 1998). Acceptance or popularity among peers is closely connected to prosocial …

Antecedents Of Consumer Trust In B-To-C Electronic Commerce, Dan J. Kim, Donald L. Ferrin, H. Raghav Rao

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Despite the importance of trust in electronic commerce, there is insufficient theory and evidence concerning the determinants of consumer trust about an Internet vendor’s trustworthiness, and the influence of consumer trust on the consumer’s purchasing intention. The purpose of this study is to: i) develop a theoretical framework identifying the antecedents of a consumer’s trust and purchase intention, ii) test the proposed model using Structural Equation Modeling, analyzing Internet consumer behavior data collected via a Web survey, and iii) provide theoretical and managerial implications. The results of the study show that consumers’ disposition to trust, privacy protection, security protection, consumers’ …

Information Systems Requirements Determination And Analysis: A Mental Modeling Approach, Keng Siau, X. Tan Aug 2003

Information Systems Requirements Determination And Analysis: A Mental Modeling Approach, Keng Siau, X. Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Regardless of the system development methodology adopted, being able to understand users’ informationrequirements is vital to the success of an information systems project. The intrinsic communications obstaclesexist within an individual user, among users, and between users and systems analysts. Different requirementsdetermination and analysis (RDA) techniques have been widely used with different outcomes. Some limitations of these techniques can be identified. In this paper, we propose a mental modeling approach to support RDA. Popular in other disciplines, mental modeling techniques have some distinct advantages to overcome some intrinsic communication obstacles in RDA, and to complement other techniques.

The Effect Of Domain Knowledge On Icon Visualization, Keng Siau, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah Aug 2003

The Effect Of Domain Knowledge On Icon Visualization, Keng Siau, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Iconic interfaces are now the de facto interface for most computer systems. Despite the popularity of iconic interfaces and the widespread belief that iconic interfaces are easier to comprehend than non-iconic interfaces, we have not come across any published study that has examined the effect of domain knowledge on end users’ interpretation of icons. An understanding of the relationship between domain knowledge and its effect on interpretation will enable us to design better icons to not only facilitate end users’ interpretation but also reduce misinterpretations of icons. This paper reports on an experimental study that investigates the effect of domain …

Training Of Observers In Risk Rituals Of The Manasa Sect Of Hinduism And Serpent Handling Sects Of Appalachia, Christopher Silver Aug 2003

Training Of Observers In Risk Rituals Of The Manasa Sect Of Hinduism And Serpent Handling Sects Of Appalachia, Christopher Silver

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study proposes to examine observer attitudes. Any ritual action that has the potential for injury or death, will be coined a religious risk ritual (RR). Observers will examine examples of video from the Manasa Hindu tradition in India and the Pentecostal and Holiness Serpent Handling traditions (SHS) of the southern Appalachian Mountain region of the United States. While training had no overall effect, study participants perceived the Manasa religious ritual as being more legitimate than the SHS religious ritual. Participants accepted of existence of a religious risk ritual cross-culturally but were biased against it in the southeastern United States.

The Contribution Of Education And The Role Of The Media In Creating And Promoting Justice, Lavinia A. Baxter Aug 2003

The Contribution Of Education And The Role Of The Media In Creating And Promoting Justice, Lavinia A. Baxter

Masters Theses

The issue of creating and promoting justice is becoming more and more significant in our era of democratization. Thus it is important to understand how countries as diverse as South Africa, Germany and the United States have managed to address the issue of providing justice to groups that suffered under previous regimes in these countries. I examine victims’ groups as diverse as former Japanese American internees, ex-German slave and forced laborers, and black South Africans. My hypothesis in this study is that two factors, the media and public education through quasi-legal commissions are critical for redress campaigns to be visible, …

Mathematics Instructional Methods And Their Effects On Student Mathematics Scores, Ruth Huovinen Aug 2003

Mathematics Instructional Methods And Their Effects On Student Mathematics Scores, Ruth Huovinen

Theses and Dissertations

Mathematics instruction is undergoing an evolution in the United States. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) advocates a change from the previous emphasis on computational skills to a greater emphasis on problem solving. The pre-service training most teachers completed did not include extensive exposure to strategies of this type. For that reason, school districts may choose to utilize staff development programs to assist teachers in acquiring these new strategies. This study examined one such staff development program, Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI), and its effects on the mathematics achievement scores of the fourth grade students in a school district. …

The objectives were to identify how students perceive hybrid classes, determine whether differences exist between male and female students in the perception of hybrid classes, determine if there is a relationship between the number of hybrid courses taken and perception of hybrid classes, and determine if differences exist between academic standing and perceptions of hybrid …

The Relationships Among Self-Efficacy, Team Efficacy And Team Performance In Baseball, Ryan Christopher Sturm Aug 2003

The Relationships Among Self-Efficacy, Team Efficacy And Team Performance In Baseball, Ryan Christopher Sturm

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the relationships among self-efficacy, team efficacy, and team performance in baseball. Team and self-efficacy questionnaires were given to 5 collegiate and 5 high school baseball teams. Official game statistics were factor analyzed to produce one offensive measure and one defensive measure. Overall, descriptive statistics demonstrated that players held high beliefs regarding their own and their teams abilities to perform successfully. The results of this study showed a high correlation between specific self-efficacy and the offensive performance measure. Therefore, self-efficacy was associated with offensive (hitting) success. There were no significant correlations between team defense and …

Childhood Emotional Deprivation And Neglect As Predictors Of Adult Perfectionalism, Heather M. Taylor Aug 2003

Childhood Emotional Deprivation And Neglect As Predictors Of Adult Perfectionalism, Heather M. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between emotional deprivation and neglect experienced as a child, and the development of perfectionistic qualities as an adult. One hundred undergraduate college students, at the University of North Dakota, ages ranging from 18 to 26, were administered the Parental Bonding Inventory (PBI, Parker, Tupling, & Brown, 1979), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ, Bernstein et al., 1994), and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS, Frost, Marten, Lahart, & Rosenblate, 1990). It was hypothesized that there would be a positive correlation between an individual's experience of emotional deprivation and neglect as a child, and the development of perfectionistic …

The New Adult Education: Bringing Peer Educators Up To Speed, Nancy Grudens-Schuck, Julianne Cramer, Derrick Exner, Mark Shour

Journal of Extension

Stereotypes about peer educators (farmers teaching farmers, parent teaching parents) may get in Extension's way. Problems occur particularly when it is believed that peer educators' "natural" abilities are what make them great. This article provides an alternative view of peer educators, with a focus on ways to increase the educational skills of this important Extension partner. The article summarizes a new approach to adult education (constructivist and transformative) that was introduced to peer educators in Iowa (farmer cooperators and pesticide applicator educators) through workshops and support materials. The article also discusses challenges associated with adoption of new forms of adult …

An Assessment Of Residents' Willingness To Pay For Green Space And Farmland Preservation Conservation Easements Using The Contingent Valuation Method (Cvm), Thomas W. Blaine, Frank R. Lichtkoppler, Reed Stanbro Aug 2003

An Assessment Of Residents' Willingness To Pay For Green Space And Farmland Preservation Conservation Easements Using The Contingent Valuation Method (Cvm), Thomas W. Blaine, Frank R. Lichtkoppler, Reed Stanbro

Journal of Extension

In recent years, federal and state government agencies have required larger proportions of funding for environmental programs to be generated locally. Local officials want assessments of local public opinion in order to make funding decisions. Extension educators should take the opportunity to fill this important need. This article presents results of an Extension study of residents' attitudes toward programs to preserve natural areas and agricultural lands. The findings, obtained using the contingent valuation method (CVM), reveal that basic attitudes toward conservation, area of residence, and income are important predictors of residents' willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation easement programs.

Information Sources And Extension Delivery Methods Used By Private Longleaf Pine Landowners, Rama B. Radhakrishna, Larry Nelson, Robert Franklin, George Kessler Aug 2003

Information Sources And Extension Delivery Methods Used By Private Longleaf Pine Landowners, Rama B. Radhakrishna, Larry Nelson, Robert Franklin, George Kessler

Journal of Extension

Reaching forest landowners with useful information has become a challenging task for Extension educators. This task is even more complex when landowners have differing perceptions about the delivery method and usefulness of the information delivered. A study was conducted to determine the preferred educational delivery methods of forest landowners in South Carolina. We found that landowners do have preferences for educational delivery methods and believe educators should consider the preferred methods to maximize program efforts. Further, findings reinforce the need to modify delivery systems to fit the demographic profile of the intended audience and the changes occurring in technology.

Irony In The Book Of Mormon, Robert A. Rees Jul 2003

Irony In The Book Of Mormon, Robert A. Rees

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Book of Mormon appears replete with examples of verbal and dramatic irony, something unlikely to have been produced intentionally by Joseph Smith with his level of rhetorical and expressive skills. Dramatic irony occurs when an exceeding young Nephi, who is large in stature, admires the exquisite sword of Laban and then grapples with the distasteful command to kill Laban with that sword. Having passed the test, Nephi has matured into a man large in stature. Dramatic irony also occurs in Abinadi’s experience with King Noah and in the similar experiences of Alma and Korihor with the power of speech …

Had For Good And Evil: 19th-Century Literary Treatments Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard H. Cracroft Jul 2003

Had For Good And Evil: 19th-Century Literary Treatments Of The Book Of Mormon, Richard H. Cracroft

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Moroni prophesied on 21 September 1823 that Joseph’s name, and by implication the book he would eventually translate and publish, should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues. Many current criticisms of the Book of Mormon trace their roots to the antagonistic critiques by 19th-century authors, beginning with Abner Cole, Alexander Campbell, and E. D. Howe. Campbell in particular was responsible for introducing the environmental theory: that Joseph Smith introduced 19th-century elements into his story. Travelers to Salt Lake City published their exposés, which were mostly critical of the Latter-day Saints and their book of …
