Family Talk: Parents And Children Involved With The Child Welfare And Children's Mental Health Systems (Full Report), Marshall Fine, Deena Mandell
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
Our project focussed on families who had been involved in services with child welfare and children’s mental health. Sixteen families were interviewed and asked to describe their experiences as clients, including positive and negative experiences, what they experienced as helpful and unhelpful, changes they identified as a result of their involvement, and characteristics and practices of the workers they liked most and least. We present their perspectives in order to build understanding of what contributes to making a positive difference in the lives of families in difficulty.
Bridging Or Maintaining Distance: A Matched Comparison Of Parent And Service Provider Realities (Summary Report), Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron
Bridging Or Maintaining Distance: A Matched Comparison Of Parent And Service Provider Realities (Summary Report), Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron
Partnerships for Children and Families Project
When service providers and parents engage with each other to improve family circumstances, do they have similar impressions of what is important and what is helpful? Our purpose in interviewing parents who have been involved in child protection services and their service providers was to understand how parents and service providers view each other, their interactions, and the services they are engaged in. We were also interested in the “official record”—the files that describe parents, children, their needs, and the services provided in response. A comparison of the perspectives of service providers, parents, and files highlights some of the barriers …

Dr. Jekyll's Waiver Of Mr. Hyde's Right To Refuse Medical Treatment: Washington's New Law Authorizing Mental Health Care Advance Directives Needs Additional Protections, Nick Anderson
Washington Law Review
Mental health care advance directives are gaining popularity nationwide. Following a growing trend, the Washington State Legislature has recently passed a law allowing patients to draft mental health care advance directives that could be irrevocable. Patients who sign an irrevocable directive essentially waive their fundamental right to refuse treatment in the future. The United States Supreme Court has held that waivers of fundamental rights must be made knowingly, voluntarily, and intelligently. However, as passed, Washington's new law contains insufficient safeguards to guarantee such a waiver. This Comment proposes that the Washington State Legislature amend this law to require two additional …

Acquaintance Rape Of College Students, Rana Sampson
United States Public Health Resources
Rape is the most common violent crime on American college campuses today. This guide describes the problem of acquaintance rape of college students, addressing its scope, causes and contributing factors; methods for analyzing it on a particular campus; tested responses; and measures for assessing response effectiveness. With this information, police and public safety officers can more effectively prevent the problem.
Researchers believe that college rape prevention programs, including the most widely used ones, are insufficient. Most rapes are unreported, perhaps giving campus administrators and police the false impression that current efforts are adequate. In addition, campus police may be influenced …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Coping mechanisms used to deal with stressful childhood memories and current stressors were assessed for 196 women in each of 4 groups: no abuse history, sexual abuse history, physical abuse history, and both sexual and physical abuse history. Current psychological adjustment was also examined. Discriminant function analyses revealed a variety of significant differences between the groups in use of strategies for coping with memories of abuse or another childhood stressor. There was no relationship between childhood history of abuse and the manner in which women coped with a current stressor. Women with an abuse history reported significantly poorer adult adjustment …

Facilitators And Barriers To Compliance Of Middle-Aged Hypertensive African-American Adults, Monica Jones
MSN Research Projects
Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. Surveys indicate that one out of four Americans has high blood pressure. It occurs more often in men than women and is most common in African-American males. Despite the fact that there are constantly improving treatments available, many hypertensive patients are noncompliant with prescribed treatment plans. The focus of this descriptive study was to identify facilitators and barriers to compliance in hypertensive middle-aged African American adults. Pender's Health Promotion Model served as the theoretical framework. The research question guiding this study was as follows: …

Primary Care Providers' Prescribing Practices Of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, Ginger Dowell
MSN Research Projects
The use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is rapidly growing among the general population. Researchers have identified only minimal empirical data regarding the SSRI-prescribing practices among primary care providers. The focus of this descriptive study was to explore SSRI-prescribing practices of primary care providers. Benner's (1984) Novice to Expert Model was the theoretical framework used to conduct this study. The research questions used to guide the research were as follows: What factors influence the prescribing practices of primary care providers regarding SSRIs? And what are the perceived competency levels of primary care providers in prescribing SSRIs? The research design …

Primary Care Family Nurse Practitioners’ Practices O F Assessment For The State O F Thriving Among Community-Based Elders, Judy Labonte
MSN Research Projects
The increasing life span of people within the developed world may produce major health problems for the elder. These health problems lead to premature declines in function and cognition. Many healthcare professionals do not recognize these declines until the need for institutionalized care is urgent. Research has demonstrated that healthcare professionals either fail to recognize or address these declines, contributing to poor outcomes for the elder and the exponential rise in healthcare expenses o f the Medicare and Medicaid funds. This exploratory, descriptive study was designed to examine the level of assessment by primary care family nurse practitioners (FNPs) for …
Identification Of Common Variables Among A Select Group Of Children With Autism, Angela Yarbrough
Identification Of Common Variables Among A Select Group Of Children With Autism, Angela Yarbrough
MSN Research Projects
Autism has become the topic of much recent debate. Autism is a serious, lifelong developmental disability characterized by significant impairments in reciprocal social interactions and communication skills, as well as a restricted and repetitive pattern of interests and or behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Minimal information is available about the prevalence or causes of the disorder in the United States. The purpose of this descriptive study was to find and identify common variables among a select group of children diagnosed with autism. Roger's Science of Unitary Human Beings served as the theoretical framework for this study. Rogers (1980) states that …

The Effect Of Age And Advice Accuracy On Compliance With Decision Support, Susan E. Vallance
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This thesis was designed to determine whether age or the accuracy of advice provided significantly effects compliance with a computerized decision support assistant. 48 participants in two groups, aged 20-40 (younger adults) and 41-69 (older adults), performed a monitoring/vigilance task intended to be similar to screening baggage with an X-ray monitor. A decision support assistant was provided to assist participants in choosing one out of four gray circles that had the most contrast with the background screen. Compliance with the decision support assistant's advice was then assessed. Results indicated that the level of advice accuracy did have a significant effect …
Kula And The Trobriand Islands: The Meaning And Power Of Objects, Becky Tomlinson
Kula And The Trobriand Islands: The Meaning And Power Of Objects, Becky Tomlinson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Just as a word in a foreign language must be interpreted for one who does not speak the language, a cultural artifact alone holds no significance or meaning for an outsider. Thus, for an object to be understood it cannot stand alone, but must be placed in context though time and space, and various layers of cultural meaning must be expounded. The word lagim, from the Kiriwina language, may be roughly translated as meaning "the splashboard of a Kula canoe". This translation may give the proper words from English that denote the object, but it still leaves much to …
The Influence Of Teachers' Efficacy And Beliefs On Mathematics Instruction In The Early Childhood Classroom., Elizabeth Todd Brown 1948-
The Influence Of Teachers' Efficacy And Beliefs On Mathematics Instruction In The Early Childhood Classroom., Elizabeth Todd Brown 1948-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation was a correlational study conducted with a population of pre-k educators from a large Midwestern, metropolitan school district. The purpose was to examine if relations existed among early childhood teachers' sense of self efficacy, their beliefs about the importance of mathematics and teachers' mathematics instructional practices. There is strong reason to believe that teachers' mathematics beliefs and conceptions about the subject matter and its teaching play a vital role in their effectiveness as mediators between the subject and the learner. Examining teachers' efficacy and beliefs can inform educational practice and differentiate between successful and less successful instructional practices …

Faculty Adoption Of Computer Technology For Instruction In The North Carolina Community College System., Karen Hill Less
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Computer technology has become an integral part of instruction at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels. Some instructors have enthusiastically adopted technological innovations in their classrooms, often expending their own funds for hardware and software, while others have resisted the trend, citing a myriad of reasons for not including computer technology. Significant research on the adoption of innovations has been undertaken by Everett M. Rogers, who identified individuals on a continuum from Innovator to Laggard. Rogers’ research was used as a basis to classify full-time faculty teaching in degree programs in the North Carolina Community College System and to compare …

Miranda'S Poisoned Fruit Tree: The Admissibility Of Physicial Evidence Derived From An Unwarned Statement, Kirsten Lela Ambach
Miranda'S Poisoned Fruit Tree: The Admissibility Of Physicial Evidence Derived From An Unwarned Statement, Kirsten Lela Ambach
Washington Law Review
Miranda v. Arizona created an exclusionary rule that prohibits using, as part of the prosecution's case in chief, evidence that is obtained as the result of unwarned custodial interrogation. In Michigan v. Tucker and Oregon v. Elstad, the United States Supreme Court narrowed the scope of this rule in relation to the "fruit of the poisonous tree" doctrine that excludes all evidence derived from constitutional violations. The Tucker Court held that the testimony of a witness identified from an unwarned statement should be admitted, and the Elstad Court held that a warned statement following an unwarned statement should also …
