The Sick Men Of Persia: The Importance Of Illness As A Factor In The Interpretation Of Modern Iranian Diplomatic History, Amir A. Afkhami Sep 2003

The Sick Men Of Persia: The Importance Of Illness As A Factor In The Interpretation Of Modern Iranian Diplomatic History, Amir A. Afkhami

Medicine Faculty Publications

STUDIES OF IRANIAN POLITICAL HISTORY OFTEN ASSUME THAT THE REPERCUSSIONS OF physical or mental illness on leadership are inconsequential in determining the course of history. Globally, very few scholars have attempted to systematically examine the effects of illness on leaders and Iranian historians seem to evade this topic entirely.

Legal Protection For Conversational And Communication Privacy In Family, Marriage And Domestic Disputes: An Examination Federal And State Wiretap And Stored Communications Acts And The Common Law Privacy Intrusion Tort, Richard C. Turkington Sep 2003

Legal Protection For Conversational And Communication Privacy In Family, Marriage And Domestic Disputes: An Examination Federal And State Wiretap And Stored Communications Acts And The Common Law Privacy Intrusion Tort, Richard C. Turkington

Working Paper Series

In the article I examine the legality of the not uncommon practice of surreptitiously recording telephone conversations, videotaping activities and accessing e-mail or voicemail communications by parties in domestic disputes. First, I examine the important values that are implicated by such activities. These values include conversation, communication and physical privacy. Conversation (and communication) privacy are valued on both intrinsic and instrumentalist grounds. These values run into countervailing values in domestic conflict cases. These include parental autonomy in child rearing and the best interests of the child. I argue that the pervasiveness of electronic surveillance and the emerging tradition in our …

Social Learning Of Prey Location In Hatchery-Reared Atlantic Salmon, C. Brown, A. Markula, K. Laland Sep 2003

Social Learning Of Prey Location In Hatchery-Reared Atlantic Salmon, C. Brown, A. Markula, K. Laland

Aquaculture Collection

Naïve, hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr were paired with demonstrators that had been pre-trained to accept live prey from the surface or from the benthos. After 6 days of observing demonstrators through a clear perspex partition the naïve fish’s benthic foraging skills were tested. The results revealed that hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon can be taught to target benthic prey items by observation alone and social learning protocols can be utilized to dramatically increase benthic foraging success. The results are discussed with reference to refining hatchery-rearing practices with a view to improving the post-release survival of hatchery fishes. The role of …

Performance Standards: Utility For Different Uses Of Assessments, Robert L. Linn Sep 2003

Performance Standards: Utility For Different Uses Of Assessments, Robert L. Linn

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Performance standards are arguably one of the most controversial topics in educational measurement. There are uses of assessments such as licensure and certification where performance standards are essential. There are many other uses, however, where performance standards have been mandated or become the preferred method of reporting assessment results where the standards are not essential to the use. ...

Thoughts On Reading "The Personal": Toward A Discursive Ethics Of Professional Critical Literacy, Jane Hindman Sep 2003

Thoughts On Reading "The Personal": Toward A Discursive Ethics Of Professional Critical Literacy, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

Notes this special issue of College English that author has edited focuses primarily on embodied personal writing. Identifies and argues for a powerful alternative to masculinist discourse by incorporating an "embodied rhetoric" into professional discursive practices. Considers how embodied rhetoric requires gestures to the material practices of the professional group and to the quotidian circumstances of the individual writer.

Caveat Relocator: A Practical Relocation Proposal To Save Space And Promote Electronic Resources, David C. Tyler, Brian L. Pytlik Zillig

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Despite ever-increasing electronic information, space on library shelves continues to be a problem. This article discusses one library's efforts to find space on overcrowded library shelves by moving selected resources to off-swite storage and at the same time promoting use of electronic resources, namely the electronic journals that make up the JSTOR database. Issues explored include in-house use of bound periodicals, circulation statistics, interlibrary loan requests, and computer printing vs. photocopying for print titles available through JSTOR.
