Financial Prediction Using Time Series, Arunkumar. Srinivasan Jan 2003

Financial Prediction Using Time Series, Arunkumar. Srinivasan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis discusses the implementation of a feed forward NN using time series model to predict the sudden rise or sudden crash of a company's stock prices. The theory behind this prediction system is Pattern recognition. Pattern recognition techniques for time-series prediction are based on structural matching of the current state of the time-series with previously occurring states in historical data for making predictions. This study reports the result of attempts to predict the Motorola stock price index using artificial neural networks (ANN). Daily data from January 1999 to December 2001 were taken from the NYSE. These data are classified …

Female Multiple Mating And Sperm Storage In An Arctiid Moth: Utetheisa Ornatrix, Ingrid M. Curril Jan 2003

Female Multiple Mating And Sperm Storage In An Arctiid Moth: Utetheisa Ornatrix, Ingrid M. Curril

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Utetheisa ornatrix females mate with many different males, but only one of their mates generally sires the progeny. To investigate the mechanism of this sperm precedence, the sperm contained within the spermatheca of field-caught females was counted. Captured females contained the remains of between 1 and 23 spermatophores, each received at a separate mating. The sperm number did not depend on the number of matings. These data suggests that sperm may be lost from the spermatheca, and that it may never arrive there after some matings. In addition to this investigation, a study on the pattern of arrangement within the …

Finding Their Voice: Jewish Women Artists In The 19th And 20th Centuries, Anita Mary Kirchen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

While Jewish women artists became active in the visual arts beginning in the mid-19th century, to date they have not been addressed as a group. This project presents a theoretical and historical overview of the work of six Jewish women artists---Rebecca Solomon, Charlotte Salomon, Helen Frankenthaler, Sonia Delaunay, Louise Nevelson, and Eva Hesse---examining their art in the context of their cultural heritage, Euro-American nationalities, social environments, life experiences, and contemporary art movements. Providing both representational and nonrepresentational artists---an important factor in Jewish aesthetics---this group includes both well-recognized artists and those whose work has only recently become known. For Delaunay, Frankenthaler, …

From Presidential Wife To Leader In Her Own Right? The Media's Representation Of Hillary Rodham Clinton And The Feminine Ideal, Amy Carol Oxner Jan 2003

From Presidential Wife To Leader In Her Own Right? The Media's Representation Of Hillary Rodham Clinton And The Feminine Ideal, Amy Carol Oxner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis examines how the media depicted First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton when she stepped outside of the traditional feminine roles of wife and/or mother and into the traditionally masculine/public world with her bid to run for the office of United States Senator from New York. It critically examines the cover, cover story images, and textual representations in Newsweek, Time, and New York magazines by means of a feminist semiotic and rhetorical analysis to discern potential meanings. The research concludes that the media circumscribe limited roles for First Ladies. First Ladies continue to be shown as victim, object, and/or appendage …

Generations Of Meaning: The Matrix Of Authority In Don Delillo's "White Noise", Richard Michael Potter Jan 2003

Generations Of Meaning: The Matrix Of Authority In Don Delillo's "White Noise", Richard Michael Potter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Since its appearance in 1985, Don DeLillo's novel White Noise has been regarded as the prototype of the postmodern novel---though not for style and form, but rather for content and theme. DeLillo's postmodern society is the site of dissipated "structures" of power and authority, the hyperreal realm of simulacrum. The narrator---J.A.K. (a.k.a. Jack) Gladney---cannot fathom this world of disseminated authority, where knowledge and power are continually generated behind what Michel Foucault calls "the great abstraction of exchange". My thesis suggests that Jack's struggle to cope in this society is complicated by his own, exaggerated subjectivity. He is, in the words …

Hemingway Hero And The Monomyth: An Examination Of The Hero Quest Myth In The Nick Adams Stories, John James Bajger Jan 2003

Hemingway Hero And The Monomyth: An Examination Of The Hero Quest Myth In The Nick Adams Stories, John James Bajger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The code hero is the foundation of Hemingway interpretation and central to an understanding of his ideology. The values, ideals and actions of many of Hemingway's greatest heroes fit within this framework, and the Hemingway hero is as firm a part of American literary myth as Melville's Great White Whale. Twain's Huckleberry Finn, or Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha county. I will use Joseph Campbell's work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a study in which he details his conception of the monomyth---the basic underlying structure for all heroic myths---to show how the idea of the mythic hero links the Nick Adams stories …

Impact Of Noise On Seafloor Property Estimation Using Biot Model Parameters Obtained Through An Inversion Of Chirp Sonar Data, Lachlan I. Munro Jan 2003

Impact Of Noise On Seafloor Property Estimation Using Biot Model Parameters Obtained Through An Inversion Of Chirp Sonar Data, Lachlan I. Munro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis describes the development and testing of an inversion method, based on the Biot-Stoll acoustic wave propagation model, for estimating sediments properties from acoustic reflection measurements of the seabed. The Biot-Stoll model is a physics-based model which describes the propagation of compressional and shear waves through porous media. Given the physical sediment properties of the seabed, the pressure reflection coefficient of the seabed is calculated using the Biot-Stoll model. The proposed inversion procedure varies sediment properties until a least squares fit is obtained between the output of the model and the measured reflection coefficient. Random errors are introduced into …

Homoerotic Encounters In The Fictions Of Edgar Allan Poe, Judy Ann Connolly Jan 2003

Homoerotic Encounters In The Fictions Of Edgar Allan Poe, Judy Ann Connolly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Using "The Fall of the House of Usher" as the principal, framework tale, this study illuminates Edgar Allan Poe's fictions from a perspective that focuses on homoerotic encounters. Since few prior studies have been directed at Poe's homosexual content, this thesis gives special attention to the benchmark criticism by D. H. Lawrence, which has long influenced readers' interpretations of sexual relationships in Poe's stories. This inquiry includes gender studies, especially the work of Leland S. Person, as well as queer theorist commentary on Poe and his contemporaries. It also deliberates on the definition of the queer aesthete provided by Alexander …

Leadership: The Intrapreneurial Experience At The University Of Oxford And The University Of Warwick, United Kingdom, Linda Marie Smith Jan 2003

Leadership: The Intrapreneurial Experience At The University Of Oxford And The University Of Warwick, United Kingdom, Linda Marie Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Intrapreneurialism, a strategy adopted by an organization to exploit ideas and turn them into profitable realities, is a relatively recent phenomenon in higher education. Previous studies have concentrated on intrapreneurialism from the perspective of how it relates to organizational structures, characteristics of entrepreneurial universities, and academic strategies as a comparison to industry (Keller, 1983; Clark, 1998; Slaughter & Leslie, 1997). This present study investigated another aspect of intrapreneurialism, intrapreneurial leadership. This is a subject that, to date, has not received the attention it requires if academic leaders are to play the role expected of them in a modern, highly competitive …

Low-Income Women's Standpoint: Recognizing Poor And Working-Class American Women As Generators Of Resistant Knowledge, Holly Ann Larson Jan 2003

Low-Income Women's Standpoint: Recognizing Poor And Working-Class American Women As Generators Of Resistant Knowledge, Holly Ann Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation puts economically disadvantaged American women at the center of analysis. I turn to standpoint theory to demonstrate that low-income women construct knowledge out of resistance to systemic oppression in their everyday, concrete worlds. In addition, I create a distinct theory on low-income women's standpoint to show that poor and working-class women are grounded in and produce knowledge from the messiness of contradictions and the murkiness of ambiguity in the immediate, material world. Therefore, their forms of resistance is as complex, ambiguous, and messy as the world from which they struggle. Discerning and analyzing low-income women's standpoint does not …

Mitochondrial Dna Damage In C. Elegans Sperm As A Function Sperm Activity, Joel P. Willis Jan 2003

Mitochondrial Dna Damage In C. Elegans Sperm As A Function Sperm Activity, Joel P. Willis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Several models for the evolution of maternal inheritance of mitochondria predict that the sperm mitochondria undergo oxidative damage and pose a threat to the developing embryo. Here, I test the hypothesis that the sperm are damaged by reactive oxygen species generated by aerobic sperm activity. In my first experiment, I found no significant difference in fecundity between worms fertilized by old versus young sperm, suggesting that the sperm nuclear genome is not affected by the extent of sperm activity. In my second experiment, I found that sperm mitochondrial DNA has deletions, indicating damage, but this damage does not accumulate with …

Mentoring Across Multiple Generations Of School Leaders, Janis. Andrews Jan 2003

Mentoring Across Multiple Generations Of School Leaders, Janis. Andrews

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Higher expectations for student achievement, administrative shortages, and more diverse emotional, social and learning needs of students, make the job of the educational leader a challenging one for today's school principals and district administrators. Modeling Multiple Abstraction Levels In Soc Using Systemc, Haritha. Jillellamudi Jan 2003

Modeling Multiple Abstraction Levels In Soc Using Systemc, Haritha. Jillellamudi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Technological advances are providing us with the capability to integrate more and more functionality into a single chip. This is leading to a new design paradigm, System On a Chip (SoC). SoC design brings with it new challenges and difficulties. Managing these challenges and complexity necessitate modeling of systems at a hierarchy of abstraction levels starting from System Level down to Register Transfer Level. Using a single language across all these levels would ensure that the models are consistent and error-free. SystemC is one such language that has the infrastructure for specifying the design at System level, Behavioral level and …

Modeling Of Gasoline Emissions From Stationary And Mobile Sources At Port Everglades, Martina M. Kimmlingen Jan 2003

Modeling Of Gasoline Emissions From Stationary And Mobile Sources At Port Everglades, Martina M. Kimmlingen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Available air quality data has been analyzed using the Industrial Source Complex Dispersion Model (ISC3). The FORTRAN program Mobile 5a was utilized to obtain the emission factors. Concerning the toxic volatile organic compounds, the simulations indicate that benzene exceeded the previous permissible air quality standard. Toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene values remained within allowable concentration levels. Long-term annual benzene emissions from stationary sources exceeded the former reference concentration of 0.12 mug/m 3 about five times per year, whereas the data for 8 and 24 hours were relatively low. Simulation results for the mobile sources demonstrated that the emission factor is a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In this dissertation I have used photoluminescence (PL) spectrometric analysis to measure the temperature dependence of the spectral features of the direct band gap semiconductor CdxZn1-xSe , for two nominal concentrations x = 0.25, 0.50, in the temperature range 25--300 K. The effective concentrations were obtained from analysis of the spectra. The parameters that describe the temperature dependence of the line width broadening have been evaluated using different models. The PL broadband characteristics of Cd0.22Zn0.78Se and Cd0.41Zn0.59Se are also investigated within the energy range 1.36--2.40 eV and temperature range 25--305 K. Two broad bands are observed, the higher energy band …

Neuropsychological Effects Of Cocaine Addiction With And Without Alcohol Abuse, Ananda K. Justice Jan 2003

Neuropsychological Effects Of Cocaine Addiction With And Without Alcohol Abuse, Ananda K. Justice

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Previous research has revealed contradicting results when looking at the combined neuropsychological effects of cocaine and alcohol. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of cocaine with and without alcohol use on cognitive measures. It was hypothesized that the combined effects of cocaine and alcohol will compile, allowing for greater deficits than from the effects of cocaine alone. Fifty-four cocaine dependent subjects (C) were selected, 29 of them reported concurrent cocaine and alcohol dependence (CA). Neuropsychological tests revealed significantly lower scores by the C group compared to the CA group on one measure of executive functioning only. …

Naples: The Mother City, Natalia Rita Giannini Jan 2003

Naples: The Mother City, Natalia Rita Giannini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Suspended in the corporeality of the baroque, with its emphasis on cycles and simultaneity, rather than linearity, Naples epitomizes the mother space that has been objectified and appropriated by male subjectivity and its alienating rationality, as articulated by the homogenizing discourse of psychoanalysis. This paradigmatic metropolis which actualizes its ancient Greek signification as a "mother-city"---Naples was originally named after the Homeric siren, Parthenope, and associated throughout history with various feminine incarnations (the Cumaean sibyl, the Madonna)---asserts a form of reason that transcends the imposition of the Lacanian signification of the phallus and its dichotomizing paradigm of subjectivity. In Anna Maria …

New Methodology In Accelerated Testing Of Mechanical Heart Valve Prostheses, Changfu. Wu Jan 2003

New Methodology In Accelerated Testing Of Mechanical Heart Valve Prostheses, Changfu. Wu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Mechanical heart valve (MHV) prosthesis is used commonly for clinical replacement of a diseased or dysfunctional natural valve. It is expected to operate uninterruptedly in the human chest for at least 10 years. Classified as Class III medical devices, MHVs of a new design are required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to undergo accelerated durability test for up to 600 million cycles, before a pre-market approval (PMA) can be considered. Knowledge of potential damage/failure mechanisms is of practical interest in assessing the results obtained from accelerated testing. During such tests, an MHV is subjected to higher stresses at …

Performance Measurement Using Trained Observer Ratings: The Effect Of Environmental Variables On Comparative Measures In Local Government, Donald Patrick Giancoli Jan 2003

Performance Measurement Using Trained Observer Ratings: The Effect Of Environmental Variables On Comparative Measures In Local Government, Donald Patrick Giancoli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Comparative performance measurement is an anathema to most government officials. While internal comparison with national benchmarks or other similar agencies is an accepted management analysis tool, public comparisons are deemed too politically risky for all but a few governments, agencies, and non-profits. To avoid the unappealing prospect of being unfavorably ranked versus comparable agencies, governments cite two primary objections. First, performance measurement is considered an inexact science, subject to manipulation of input data and outcome scores that affects comparisons. Second, comparative measurement is considered unfair by governments because they maintain each operates in a unique environment of demographic and physical …

(Modern) Detroit-As-Experience: Understanding Joyce Carol Oates's "Them", Tai Lynden Houser Jan 2003

(Modern) Detroit-As-Experience: Understanding Joyce Carol Oates's "Them", Tai Lynden Houser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Joyce Carol Oates's novel them and Wallace Stevens's poetry can be examined in light of Oates's critical essay "Against Nature." These fictions illustrate Oates's idea of Nature not existing as a noun, Nature, but as an experience which we attempt to understand through language. Indirectly, Oates calls on other authors and theorists to argue for a redefinition of Nature. She comes to conclude that what we call "Nature" in reality exists as Nature-as-experience. Once we fully understand Nature-as-experience, we can utilize those principles to understand a relatively new occurrence in history and literature: the manmade city. In them, the city, …

A Comparison Of Different Methods For Improving Hamstring Flexibility, Kenric. Lai Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Different Methods For Improving Hamstring Flexibility, Kenric. Lai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Active-isolated (AI = 11) stretching was compared to static stretching (SS = 8), proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching (PNF = 10), and a control group (C = 9) at improving hamstring flexibility. Pre- and post-assessments of flexibility were performed with a goniometer on the right leg. All subjects performed a warm-up on an ergometer; after which, subjects in the stretching groups performed mode-specific stretching of both hamstrings 4 days per week for 4 weeks. A significant increase was found in flexibility after training for all stretching groups (p < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in flexibility between groups (ANOVA: p > 0.05). It is possible the small number of subjects may have contributed to …

Also, the network diameter, the number of piconets formed and the impact of device failures are …

Ash Nazg: A Biography, Jason Phillip Bernabei Jan 2003

Ash Nazg: A Biography, Jason Phillip Bernabei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

At the center of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings lies an epic power struggle between good and evil, the latter embodied by the "One Ring," "Ash Nazg" in the speech of Mordor. Although Tolkien scholarship has heretofore treated the Ring as a non-sentient object, "Ash Nazg" has a surprisingly dramatic life story as well as a dynamic relationship with other characters in the epic. His character development is here chronicled from conception to death, and his relationships thoroughly examined. As a machiavel of royal birth, abducted after the defeat of his father by the Numenoreans, Ash …
