Trailing Edge Noise Propagation Through A Cascade Of Blades, Charlie Desire Roy Jan 2003

Trailing Edge Noise Propagation Through A Cascade Of Blades, Charlie Desire Roy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Aircraft engine fan trailing edge noise prediction is very challenging. To achieve a better understanding of the physics of the propagation problem, the fan has been modeled as an infinite cascade of blades and acoustic monopoles and dipoles have been placed at the trailing edges. The flow has been computed using the Transonic Small Disturbance equation. As soon as the critical Mach number is exceeded by the free stream, a supersonic region that joins two consecutive blades appears. It completely blocks the sound and limits the study to entirely subsonic flow. In this type of flow, a sound propagation simulator …

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model For The Biomechanical Analysis Of Total Ankle Replacement, Ha Van Vo Jan 2003

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model For The Biomechanical Analysis Of Total Ankle Replacement, Ha Van Vo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The artificial ankle joint implant has been developed since 1970 after the relatively successful total hip and knee arthroplasty. The main goal of ankle replacement is to eliminate pain and preserve joint motion. Unfortunately, total ankle replacement (TAR) has not been effective as implant of other joints. Recently, published studies of early series showed that the newer second-generation ankle prosthesis have been improved with time. However, only one of the three current ankle designs is allowed by FDA to be used widely in the U.S. This study provides a new ankle design with an advanced approach in designs, biomechanical rationale, …

Teckno Culture: A Context For The Hybridization Of Belief Systems, Bryan R. Rill Jan 2003

Teckno Culture: A Context For The Hybridization Of Belief Systems, Bryan R. Rill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Teckno (or Rave) as a musical movement has rapidly spread across the globe. The youth culture that has developed has been sorely misunderstood by academia and media, often labeled as narcissistic, hedonistic, and lacking meaning. Contrary to these perceptions, Teckno culture is a collage of meanings. Long-term participation in Teckno culture has resulted in the development of new hybridized belief systems for many of the participants. Hybridization occurs as a result of exposure to multiple religious and mystic beliefs while in altered states of consciousness. This thesis explores the characteristics of these hybrids and identifies the seven elements that create …

Visual Spectral Sensitivity Of Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta L.) And Leatherback (Dermochelys Coriacea L.) Hatchlings: A Comparative Study, Judith P. Gocke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In the ocean, lighting varies with habitat; the eye's spectral sensitivity must vary with visual ecology. Green turtles are the only sea turtle whose spectral sensitivity has been studied. Loggerheads and leatherbacks see visible light between 340 and 700 nm. However, the wavelengths detected with the greatest sensitivity by both species are those best transmitted at the specific depths where food, mates and predators are likely to be encountered. Both species have trichromatic vision, but the species differ in the concentration and peak sensitivity of each visual pigment resulting in either a broadly tuned (loggerhead) or finely tuned (leatherback) spectral …

Effects Of Flow On The Taxonomic Composition Of Everglades Periphyton, Barbara A. Hiaasen Jan 2003

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Analysis of the relationship of velocity to taxonomic composition of periphyton-based stormwater treatment areas, in conjunction with other metrics, is a valuable tool for evaluating the phosphorus removal efficiency of this Everglades restoration advanced treatment technology. Periphyton taxonomic composition, biomass, water and tissue total phosphorus (TP), pH, and temperature were analyzed in three slow velocity (0.22 cm s-1) and three fast velocity (2.0 cm s-1) mesocosms. Loading rate, retention time and surface area were kept constant, with velocity the single variable between treatments. There was no significant difference in taxonomic composition, water TP, tissue TP, or temperature between the slow …

Electronic Structure Calculations For Alloys Using The Polymorphous Coherent Potential Approximation, Silvia Pella Jan 2003

Electronic Structure Calculations For Alloys Using The Polymorphous Coherent Potential Approximation, Silvia Pella

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The Polymorphous Coherent Approximation (PCPA) plays the central role in this study. The PCPA represents an extension of the Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) in the sense that it treats an alloy model in which all of the atoms are allowed to have distinct charges and potentials. It makes use of the supercells that contain hundreds of atoms. The Madelung potentials at all sites are calculated exactly. The present calculations demonstrate the advantages of the PCPA over the CPA in explaining experiments that depend critically on the charge transfer in an alloy.

Energy Metabolism And Slow Skeletal Troponin I Phosphorylation In Cardiac Troponin I Null Mouse Heart, Yuanyuan Jia Jan 2003

Energy Metabolism And Slow Skeletal Troponin I Phosphorylation In Cardiac Troponin I Null Mouse Heart, Yuanyuan Jia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Troponin I (TnI) plays an important role in cardiac muscle contraction. Two TnI genes (cardiac and slow skeletal TnI) are predominantly expressed in the heart. In cTnI knockout mice, myocardial TnI deficiency results in a diastolic dysfunction and a sudden death in homozygous mutants. In the present studies, energy metabolism has been analyzed in myocardial cells from cTnI null hearts. Our results have demonstrated that damaged relaxation and increased Ca2+-independent force production in cTnI null hearts stimulated myofibril MgATPase activities accompanied by the increase of mitochondria quantity and ATPase activities. In addition, an increase of ssTnI phosphorylation level has been …

Enhanced Ticket-Based Qos Routing Protocols In Ad Hoc Networks, Chun-Jung Huang Jan 2003

Enhanced Ticket-Based Qos Routing Protocols In Ad Hoc Networks, Chun-Jung Huang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis describes QoS routing techniques in ad hoc networks. QoS routing is to find paths between given source and destinations that fulfill a set of QoS requirements. QoS routing in ad hoc networks is a challenging problem due to the dynamical nature of ad hoc networks and the complexity of the QoS routing problem. Ticket-based probing scheme (TBP) is a creative approach to solve QoS routing problem, however, its proactive nature makes it deficient and unscalable. In this thesis, we first present the adaptive ticket-based routing protocol (ATBR), a proactive protocol enhanced from TBP, by introducing a new imprecise …

Envirotronically Speaking: A Case Study Of Dis-Identification In Online Industrial And Oppositional Discourse About Global Warming, Mark A. Kattoura

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Corporations such as Exxon Mobil and environmentalist groups such as Greenpeace realize the potential of the Internet from a public relations standpoint. They have taken their industrial and oppositional discourse about global warming online through campaigns meant to appear motivated by grassroots impulses but which, as in the case of Exxon Mobil, are often motivated by profit. This study combines rhetorical and media studies approaches in performing semiotic analysis of online texts related to global warming. It concludes that corporations and environmentalists are making innovative use of this new medium in communicating their respective ideologies, but that corporate texts reflect …

This thesis discusses the implementation of a feed forward NN using time series model to predict the sudden rise or sudden crash of a company's stock prices. The theory behind this prediction system is Pattern recognition. Pattern recognition techniques for time-series prediction are based on structural matching of the current state of the time-series with previously occurring states in historical data for making predictions. This study reports the result of attempts to predict the Motorola stock price index using artificial neural networks (ANN). Daily data from January 1999 to December 2001 were taken from the NYSE. These data are classified …

Female Multiple Mating And Sperm Storage In An Arctiid Moth: Utetheisa Ornatrix, Ingrid M. Curril Jan 2003

Female Multiple Mating And Sperm Storage In An Arctiid Moth: Utetheisa Ornatrix, Ingrid M. Curril

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Utetheisa ornatrix females mate with many different males, but only one of their mates generally sires the progeny. To investigate the mechanism of this sperm precedence, the sperm contained within the spermatheca of field-caught females was counted. Captured females contained the remains of between 1 and 23 spermatophores, each received at a separate mating. The sperm number did not depend on the number of matings. These data suggests that sperm may be lost from the spermatheca, and that it may never arrive there after some matings. In addition to this investigation, a study on the pattern of arrangement within the …

This thesis examines how the media depicted First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton when she stepped outside of the traditional feminine roles of wife and/or mother and into the traditionally masculine/public world with her bid to run for the office of United States Senator from New York. It critically examines the cover, cover story images, and textual representations in Newsweek, Time, and New York magazines by means of a feminist semiotic and rhetorical analysis to discern potential meanings. The research concludes that the media circumscribe limited roles for First Ladies. First Ladies continue to be shown as victim, object, and/or appendage …

Generations Of Meaning: The Matrix Of Authority In Don Delillo's "White Noise", Richard Michael Potter Jan 2003

Generations Of Meaning: The Matrix Of Authority In Don Delillo's "White Noise", Richard Michael Potter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Since its appearance in 1985, Don DeLillo's novel White Noise has been regarded as the prototype of the postmodern novel---though not for style and form, but rather for content and theme. DeLillo's postmodern society is the site of dissipated "structures" of power and authority, the hyperreal realm of simulacrum. The narrator---J.A.K. (a.k.a. Jack) Gladney---cannot fathom this world of disseminated authority, where knowledge and power are continually generated behind what Michel Foucault calls "the great abstraction of exchange". My thesis suggests that Jack's struggle to cope in this society is complicated by his own, exaggerated subjectivity. He is, in the words …

Hemingway Hero And The Monomyth: An Examination Of The Hero Quest Myth In The Nick Adams Stories, John James Bajger Jan 2003

Hemingway Hero And The Monomyth: An Examination Of The Hero Quest Myth In The Nick Adams Stories, John James Bajger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The code hero is the foundation of Hemingway interpretation and central to an understanding of his ideology. The values, ideals and actions of many of Hemingway's greatest heroes fit within this framework, and the Hemingway hero is as firm a part of American literary myth as Melville's Great White Whale. Twain's Huckleberry Finn, or Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha county. I will use Joseph Campbell's work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a study in which he details his conception of the monomyth---the basic underlying structure for all heroic myths---to show how the idea of the mythic hero links the Nick Adams stories …

Impact Of Noise On Seafloor Property Estimation Using Biot Model Parameters Obtained Through An Inversion Of Chirp Sonar Data, Lachlan I. Munro Jan 2003

Impact Of Noise On Seafloor Property Estimation Using Biot Model Parameters Obtained Through An Inversion Of Chirp Sonar Data, Lachlan I. Munro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This thesis describes the development and testing of an inversion method, based on the Biot-Stoll acoustic wave propagation model, for estimating sediments properties from acoustic reflection measurements of the seabed. The Biot-Stoll model is a physics-based model which describes the propagation of compressional and shear waves through porous media. Given the physical sediment properties of the seabed, the pressure reflection coefficient of the seabed is calculated using the Biot-Stoll model. The proposed inversion procedure varies sediment properties until a least squares fit is obtained between the output of the model and the measured reflection coefficient. Random errors are introduced into …

Homoerotic Encounters In The Fictions Of Edgar Allan Poe, Judy Ann Connolly Jan 2003

Homoerotic Encounters In The Fictions Of Edgar Allan Poe, Judy Ann Connolly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Using "The Fall of the House of Usher" as the principal, framework tale, this study illuminates Edgar Allan Poe's fictions from a perspective that focuses on homoerotic encounters. Since few prior studies have been directed at Poe's homosexual content, this thesis gives special attention to the benchmark criticism by D. H. Lawrence, which has long influenced readers' interpretations of sexual relationships in Poe's stories. This inquiry includes gender studies, especially the work of Leland S. Person, as well as queer theorist commentary on Poe and his contemporaries. It also deliberates on the definition of the queer aesthete provided by Alexander …

Leadership: The Intrapreneurial Experience At The University Of Oxford And The University Of Warwick, United Kingdom, Linda Marie Smith Jan 2003

Leadership: The Intrapreneurial Experience At The University Of Oxford And The University Of Warwick, United Kingdom, Linda Marie Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Intrapreneurialism, a strategy adopted by an organization to exploit ideas and turn them into profitable realities, is a relatively recent phenomenon in higher education. Previous studies have concentrated on intrapreneurialism from the perspective of how it relates to organizational structures, characteristics of entrepreneurial universities, and academic strategies as a comparison to industry (Keller, 1983; Clark, 1998; Slaughter & Leslie, 1997). This present study investigated another aspect of intrapreneurialism, intrapreneurial leadership. This is a subject that, to date, has not received the attention it requires if academic leaders are to play the role expected of them in a modern, highly competitive …

Low-Income Women's Standpoint: Recognizing Poor And Working-Class American Women As Generators Of Resistant Knowledge, Holly Ann Larson Jan 2003

Low-Income Women's Standpoint: Recognizing Poor And Working-Class American Women As Generators Of Resistant Knowledge, Holly Ann Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This dissertation puts economically disadvantaged American women at the center of analysis. I turn to standpoint theory to demonstrate that low-income women construct knowledge out of resistance to systemic oppression in their everyday, concrete worlds. In addition, I create a distinct theory on low-income women's standpoint to show that poor and working-class women are grounded in and produce knowledge from the messiness of contradictions and the murkiness of ambiguity in the immediate, material world. Therefore, their forms of resistance is as complex, ambiguous, and messy as the world from which they struggle. Discerning and analyzing low-income women's standpoint does not …

Mitochondrial Dna Damage In C. Elegans Sperm As A Function Sperm Activity, Joel P. Willis Jan 2003

Mitochondrial Dna Damage In C. Elegans Sperm As A Function Sperm Activity, Joel P. Willis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Several models for the evolution of maternal inheritance of mitochondria predict that the sperm mitochondria undergo oxidative damage and pose a threat to the developing embryo. Here, I test the hypothesis that the sperm are damaged by reactive oxygen species generated by aerobic sperm activity. In my first experiment, I found no significant difference in fecundity between worms fertilized by old versus young sperm, suggesting that the sperm nuclear genome is not affected by the extent of sperm activity. In my second experiment, I found that sperm mitochondrial DNA has deletions, indicating damage, but this damage does not accumulate with …

Modeling Of Gasoline Emissions From Stationary And Mobile Sources At Port Everglades, Martina M. Kimmlingen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Available air quality data has been analyzed using the Industrial Source Complex Dispersion Model (ISC3). The FORTRAN program Mobile 5a was utilized to obtain the emission factors. Concerning the toxic volatile organic compounds, the simulations indicate that benzene exceeded the previous permissible air quality standard. Toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene values remained within allowable concentration levels. Long-term annual benzene emissions from stationary sources exceeded the former reference concentration of 0.12 mug/m 3 about five times per year, whereas the data for 8 and 24 hours were relatively low. Simulation results for the mobile sources demonstrated that the emission factor is a …
