The Effect Of Wellness Knowledge On Physical Activity And Nutrition Behaviors Of College Age Students, Shecanna R. Woomer

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare college age students' knowledge about wellness to their physical activity and nutrition attitudes and behaviors. This study tested the knowledge of 202 college age students at Eastern Illinois University and gathered data on their physical activity and nutrition attitudes and behaviors. A modified Wellness Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior Instrument (WKABI) questionnaire was used for data collection (Dinger, 1994). The main focus of the study was to relate the score on the knowledge test to the score on the attitude survey and to the score on the behavior survey. Subgroup comparisons by major …

Feeding Selectivity Of Anchovia Clupeoides (Pisces: Engraulidae) In The Ciénaga Grande De Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean, Guillermo Duque, Arturo Acero P

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Food selection by fishes is an important piece of information for modeling food webs in aquatic ecosystem. Monthly collections were made over a twenty-four hour period between October 1995 and June 1996 to examine the feeding selectivity of the zabaleta anchovy (Anchovia clupeoides) in the coastal lagoon Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, NE Colombia. A total of 4,389 specimens were collected, and the abundances and weights of the stomach food items were compared with similar measures calculated from samples obtained in nearby habitats. Our results indicate that the zabaleta anchovy is planktophagous, actively selecting copepods and detritus throughout …

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Adolescent binge-drinking is an area of great concern in Australia as it is with many other developed countries around the world. Every year in Australia, Commonwealth and State health authorities invest considerable resources into trying to address this issue and the results have been described as being at best, mixed. Health promotion initiatives such as school programmes, media promotion and health programmes coupled w1th restrictions on supply of alcohol are all used to try and curb the incidence of adolescent binge drinking. In recent years television advertising has specifically been used to try and curb the incidence of adolescent binge-drinking …

Use Of Ground-Based Canopy Reflectance To Determine Radiation Capture, Nitrogen And Water Status, And Final Yield In Wheat, Glen L. Ritchie

Publications

Ground-based spectral imaging devices offer an important supplement to satellite imagery. Hand-held, ground-based sensors allow rapid, inexpensive measurements that are not affected by the earth’s atmosphere. They also provide a basis for high altitude spectral indices. We quantified the spectral reflectance characteristics of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum cv. Westbred 936) in research plots subjected to either nitrogen or water stress in a two year study. Both types of stress reduced ground cover, which was evaluated by digital photography and compared with ten spectral reflectance indices. On plots with a similar soil background, simple indices such as the normalized …

The Effects Of Replacing Fish Oil With Vegetable Oils In Starter Feeds On The Liver Fat Composition Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758), Mustafa Yildiz, Erdal Şener Jan 2003

The Effects Of Replacing Fish Oil With Vegetable Oils In Starter Feeds On The Liver Fat Composition Of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758), Mustafa Yildiz, Erdal Şener

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of replacing fish oil with soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil and olive oil in starter feeds on the vicerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index and liver fatty acid composition of the sea bass were studied. Juvenile sea bass (initial weight = 7.58 ± 0.13 g) were fed experimental diets for 75 days. The fish were then killed and liver samples were collected. The lowest total crude fat value (17.61%) was found in the fish fed the fish oil diet. The highest total crude fat value (34.30%) was found in the fish fed the olive oil diet (P < 0.05). Similarly, the fish fed the fish oil diet had the lowest hepatosomatic index value (2.08) and all the fish fed vegetable oils had similarly high hepatosomatic index values (P < 0.05). Likewise, vicerosomatic index values were lowest (9.06%) in the fish fed fish oil and highest in the fish fed soybean and other vegetable oils (P < 0.05). Fatty acid analyses showed that EPA and DHA from n-3 HUFA's in the fish fed the fish oil diet, linolenic acid (18:3n-3) and linoleic acid (18:2n-6) in the fish fed the soybean oil diet and oleic acid (18:1n-9) in the fish fed the olive oil diet were higher than in the fish fed the other diets.

Comparison Of The Fatty Acid Compositions Of Egg, And Sperms Of Brood Stock Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), N. Mevlüt Aras, H. İbrahi̇m Hali̇loğlu, Muhammed Atamanalp, E. Mahmut Kocaman

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this research was to compare the fatty acid composition of egg, sperm and diet of 3-year-old brood stock rainbow trout. The results showed that there were statistically significant (P < 0,01) differences between egg, sperm and diet levels in terms of SFA, MUFA, PUFA (n-3, n-6) and EPA/DHA, which are known as important agents for fish nutrition.

Maintain Hydraulic Control Using Deep Rooted Tree Systems, A. Ferro, M. Gefell, Roger Kjelgren, D. S. Lipson, N. Zollinger, S. Jackson

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Groundwater phytotechnology systems are currently being used to control the migration of contaminant plumes and remove groundwater that flows into containment areas. Trees in such systems function by reducing recharge and using groundwater via transpiration. A stand of deep-rooted trees can act as a biological "pump", removing a substantial amount of water from the saturated zone. Depth to groundwater compared to rooting depth is an important consideration Many useful tree species are not naturally deep-rooted, but various cultural practices can produce trees with roots that are deep enough to tap into the water table. Hydraulic control can be calculated or …
