Stereotype Beliefs, Contextual Age, And Knowledge Of Aging In The Elderly, Angela Walker

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Stereotype beliefs, contextual ages, and knowledge on aging of independent and intervention-receiving elderly living in both rural and urban communities and institutions were examined in a convenience sample of 114 participants who were assigned to location and setting. Contextual age is defined as one’s quality of life in regard to environmental, social, and health factors. Participants’ acceptance of stereotypes about the elderly, contextual ages, and knowledge of aging was measured by questionnaires. Results indicated there were no significant differences regarding stereotype acceptance, contextual age, and knowledge of aging between rural and urban elderly. However, differences between community-dwelling and institutionalized elderly …

Analysis Of Impulsive Behaviors Among Prison Inmates Convicted Of Violent Crimes, Inmates Convicted Of Non-Violent Crimes And Undergraduate College Students, Lonnie Kishpaugh Sr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Sudden explosive episodes of rage and human aggression by individuals occur daily in our society. While impulsive aggressive behavior is included in several established psychological disorders, the etiology of such behavior has been widely debated.

This study tested the hypotheses that prison inmates who have committed violent crimes were no more likely to exhibit impulsive behavior, than like numbers of prison inmates who had committed non-violent crimes, or college students who have no criminal record. Groups of 20 each of the respective populations were randomly administered the Kipnis Impulsiveness Scale in accordance with instructions from the manual.

With an alpha …

The Characterization Of Two Differentially Expressed Plasma Proteins In Obese Versus Lean Rats In Two Rodent Models Of Obesity, Roger D. Boggs Jan 2003

The Characterization Of Two Differentially Expressed Plasma Proteins In Obese Versus Lean Rats In Two Rodent Models Of Obesity, Roger D. Boggs

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Zucker fa and La/N faf rats are widely studied models of genetic obesity and its complications. These two rodent models of obesity were utilized to search for a circulating protein marker for obesity. Plasma samples from both of these models of obesity were collected and analyzed via SDS-PAGE analysis. Two proteins were found which demonstrate differential expression between lean and obese rats. Both proteins demonstrated increased expression in the obese rats compared to the lean. One differentially expressed protein migrated on SDS-PAGE gels at 116 KD while the second migrated at 22 KD compared to molecular weight markers. The 22 …

Expanding Self-Direction In Services For The Aged And People With Disabilities, Ruth A. Burgess Jan 2003

Expanding Self-Direction In Services For The Aged And People With Disabilities, Ruth A. Burgess

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Medicaid-funded long-term care services are traditionally delivered in nursing homes. States may apply for waivers which allow them to provide home and community based services with Medicaid funds. Because these services are by definition an alternative to nursing home care, waiver services are generally based upon a medical model which emphasizes medical deficits and tends to restrict consumers’ movements to inside the home. Recent developments such as the Olmstead Decision and federal New Freedom Initiatives have caused states to recognize that consumers desire and have a legal right to be part of a community rather than institutionalized or homebound. These …

Not So Rare: Errors Of Metabolism During The Neonatal Period, Sandra Banta-Wright, Robert D. Steiner Jan 2003

Not So Rare: Errors Of Metabolism During The Neonatal Period, Sandra Banta-Wright, Robert D. Steiner

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

During the neonatal period, the diagnosis of an error of metabolism (EM) was once thought to portend a poor prognosis or lethality. Over the past two decades, the prognosis of many EMs has changed. The critical aspect of the metabolic evaluation in a sick newborn is to rapidly identify whether there may be a metabolic problem. If there is a metabolic problem, the goal is to minimize the sequelae of the specific disorder. This review will explore how to approach and evaluate a newborn suspected of having an EM. A discussion of clinical and laboratory findings that often accompany EM …

Profile: University Of Minnesota School Of Public Health Around The World In 10 Minutes

International Journal of Global Health

What does the phrase "global health" mean to you? Does it mean doing HIV/AIDS education in Mysore? Working to improve air quality in Manila? Or marrying eastern and western health practices for the Hmong in Minneapolis? If you answered "all of the above," you're right. Global health is all this and more. At the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, we ascribe to the philosophy whereby public health challenges are exchanged equally between developed and developing countries, and together we share the responsibility for finding solutions to these challenges.

Increased Morbidity And Mortality In Single Parent Families: A Review, Katie Steneroden Jan 2003

Increased Morbidity And Mortality In Single Parent Families: A Review, Katie Steneroden

International Journal of Global Health

American families have changed dramatically in composition in recent decades. Increasing proportions of children are being raised in single parent households, reflecting both rising divorce rates, the growing percentage of births to unmarried women and adoption by single parents. As fewer children grow up in traditional families, there is increasing concern about the impact of alternative family structures on children's health and well-being. Many believe that there is a vital connection between family structure and youth well-being, with the nuclear family constituting the optimal structure for fostering "normal" development. Some say the change in the typical nuclear family is one …

Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter Family Members From Leishmania Donovani Are Electrogenic Proton Symporters, Alex Stein, Gayatri Vaseduvan, Nicola S. Carter, Buddy Ullman, Scott M. Landfear, Michael Kavanaugh Jan 2003

Equilibrative Nucleoside Transporter Family Members From Leishmania Donovani Are Electrogenic Proton Symporters, Alex Stein, Gayatri Vaseduvan, Nicola S. Carter, Buddy Ullman, Scott M. Landfear, Michael Kavanaugh

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Leishmania donovani express two members of the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family; LdNT1 encoded by two closely related and linked genes, LdNT1.1 and LdNT1.2, that transport adenosine and pyrimidine nucleosides and LdNT2 that transports inosine and guanosine exclusively. LdNT1.1, LdNT1.2, and LdNT2 have been expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes and found to be electrogenic in the presence of nucleoside ligands for which they mediate transport. Further analysis revealed that ligand uptake and transport currents through LdNT1-type transporters are proton-dependent. In addition to the flux of protons that is coupled to the transport reaction, LdNT1 transporters mediate a variable constitutive proton …

Influence Of Coagulant Level On Proteolysis And Functionality Of Mozzarella Cheese Made Using Direct Acidification, R. I. Dave, C. J. Oberg, Donald J. Mcmahon Jan 2003

Influence Of Coagulant Level On Proteolysis And Functionality Of Mozzarella Cheese Made Using Direct Acidification, R. I. Dave, C. J. Oberg, Donald J. Mcmahon

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Nonfat (0% fat), reduced-fat (11% fat), and control (19% fat) mozzarella cheeses were made using direct acidification to test the influence of three levels (0.25X, 1X, and 4X) of coagulant concentration on proteolysis, meltability and rheological properties of cheeses during 60 d of storage at 5°C. Changes in meltability, level of intact αs1-casein and β-casein (by capillary electrophoresis), 12.5% TCA-soluble nitrogen, and complex modulus were measured. There were differences in rate of proteolysis and functional properties as a function of fat content of the cheese, but some of these differences could be attributed to differences in moisture contents …
